Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I can now say I've beaten someone who has beaten the all-time leader in game show winnings.
Usually this time of the season is the hardest for me, but not this season. I'm one point out of the promotion zone! Maybe Thorsten is saving the obscure, toughest questions for last.

Re: Learned League 75 - Official Thread

I finally beat mrparadise (I think, since he was referred by goatman) yesterday, on my third try, and am now one game below .500 on the season. My previous high TCA was 86, but I'm projected to finish with 96! Get rates have gone way up this season across the league. I already have 64 points despite...

This was a week of "almost solves." The "Howl" clue was a Final in MJ's thirteenth win, two years ago. He got it wrong.

Re: Thursday, November 23, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Manchester is the town(ship) next to my hometown, and is technically also the site of the Hindenburg disaster. My grandparents lived in a retirement community there. So you can probably guess who I was rooting for. I made the same mistake on Final. I knew Armenia bordered Iran, but I wasn't sure abo...

Re: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

This was a nightmare board. I'd managed at least $20,000 in every game in the TOC... until this one. I achieved personal worsts in Coryat score and negs, not just in this tournament, but in any game. There were four categories where I knew absolutely nothing. But I did correctly guess on FJ. I think...

B Horizon, with a few other boardies. (Not sure if LegerM is also a boardie, but he's a ronin visiting from Continental.)

Re: Denny McLain, the AJ Score, and Predicting the 2017 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions

I like this a lot. For multiple reasons, but mainly because it's been an extremely accurate predictor of who makes it to the finals. I came up with a "Jeopardy passer rating" a while ago, where DD's and Finals are analogous to touchdowns, and negs to interceptions, but the AJ Score is better. Can th...

Re: 2017 ToC Quarter-Final Matches Revealed - Discussion

I'll be surprised if Jason doesn't win the tournament. Agreed. His LL QPct after six seasons is .823, well ahead of anyone else in the tournament and even ahead of Jeopardy's two greatest players. And I would say his stats are legit because he got a 105 on this year's WQC... and if you took that WQ...

Loved the Blazing Saddles 1DS, although I spent my s***load of dimes on some of the easier questions and missed only the one about the s***load of dimes. Harrumph! Harrumph!

Re: Thursday, October 19, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I got FJ right only because he was my incorrect guess in one of the finals last season. 10 straight solves are a new personal record. This episode required a lot of mental gymnastics, especially the "zero sum" category. Skullturf and the other boardies in a certain LL league no doubt had to restrain...

Re: Tuesday, October 17, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

If you got at least one triple stumper right, along with FJ, congratulations! You won this episode from your couch. I extended my Final Jeopardy streak to eight; my record is nine. If tomorrow's category is Academy Awards, that streak's probably gonna end. Technically tonight's $1 isn't tied for the...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I'll ask -- how did you get to Baghdad on that one? I was thinking of a lot of places that had greater proximity to the actual Gulf. I guessed Baghdad - no real hint other than thinking where a train might head from Anatolia (which meant "Turkey" to me. I see that I was largely right) that went to ...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I beat Fritz Holznagel?! :o I assigned the Lebanon question a 3, and it was the only one he got right. He gave me a 3-pointer on Baghdad, even though geography is my best category. I still have no 3-pointers in the 60's ML, which I suppose is historically accurate because the NBA didn't have 3-point...

I've heard of Bowling Green due to the "massacre," but clammed because I thought it was in Tennessee... which, it turns out, is an alternative fact.

Re: Monday, October 9, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Austin got to say "P***y Galore" on national TV... which, oddly enough, is not the first time that character was mentioned on the show. The 12-27-2013 game featured her as part of the clue ($800, Colorful Movies). I interpreted "Historical Areas" as "former regions/names", so anything other than Gau...

Re: Friday, October 6, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Austin is Jeopardy's answer to Rasputin. You can bury him in a huge lead, find a DD before he does, have him whiff on a DD, and yet he somehow manages to survive. Not only survive, but win bigly. What separates good quarterbacks or Jeopardy champs from great ones is their ability to come from behind...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

If you had told me I'd have a five-game winning streak and a winning record in my first season in B Rundle... well, somehow it happened. Congrats to Blue Lion on winning the division. My 60's group has Alan Lin (who will be in the upcoming TOC) and Kevin Marshall, both superchamps. My Greater Middle...

Just looked up this champ's and a certain 74-game champ's Coryats, and the combined Coryats in their first three games: Austin Game 1: $15,400 Combined: $27,400 Game 2: $16,400 Combined: $34,400 Game 3: $17,400 Combined: $31,400 Ken Game 1: $19,600 Combined: $43,600 Game 2: $30,000 Combined: $40,600...

Re: Monday, September 25, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

BAD WAGER ALERT :!: Do the CC's see the wagers before the FJ clues are revealed? $4000 would've been reasonable (but not optimal) from second place and $12000 would not have been terrible (but again, far from optimal) from first. I was waiting for the triple trap door when the football category not ...
