Re: Thursday, May 17, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I have a dim recollection of hearing lumbago once upon a time (perhaps a Three Stooges episode?) but to the best of my knowledge never heard plumbago and would have dismissed it as a nonsense word (along with the psciatica and pscoliosis that I briefly considered). As time drifted away I tried addin...

Re: Thursday, May 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I struggled mightily with FJ and out of desperation went with Joan Rivers. I knew she had died around the given year, had written at least one book and could conceivably had been an Oscar nom. Very uncomfortable with it though as she is certainly not best known as a writer. I've heard of Nora Ephron...

Re: Wednesday, May 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Figured it was either Lewis or Clark. Meriweather sounded more like someone who would hook up with a Theodosia so I went with Lewis. Never in a million years would I have stumbled on the duel, but hopefully I have that date anchored now.

Gee I dunno, maybe because you haven't implemented any of the hundreds of tips we've given you about how to improve?

Re: Friday, April 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The names meant ntohing, but I WAGged that the furniture was the Round Table, and that got me to Guinevere. I'll take it. I know the name because Patrick Stewart played him in Excalibur . Yep, I thought "Hey, pretty sure Leodegrance was the name of the guy that Patrick Stewart played in Excalibur."...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

The clues rarely include irrelevant words. Not everything is going to be a keyword, but those that aren't are most likely intended to eliminate alternatives or lead in a particular direction.

Re: Tuesday, April 24, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

For Randy's DD I said The Partridge Family. I don't recall the wording of the clue - was there something that leads one to the Monkees instead? Yes, I had to read the FJ clue a few times to grasp what they were shooting for. Briefly considered some sort of "geographic center" but once the light bulb...

I really appreciate clue 605 - I have never seen or heard of several of those creations but will be doing some reading about them now.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Well, I guess it's time we came clean with you. For the last 140 pages we have been yanking your chain. You are absolutely right - there is no relationship between the clues and the "correct" responses. The contestants on the show have rigorous rehearsals where they practice giving random responses....

This double-named Washington city is famed for its onions.

(Couldn't resist.)
Hmm. I fancy myself a better-than-average cook and have never heard of Walla Walla onions. Not sure I would consider that a top box clue either.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Why should I pay attention to movies anyway if they all suck? First off, that's a pretty broad brush, Picasso. Second, maybe because you claim to want to get better at a show that frequently asks about movies? No one is saying you need to study them, but it doesn't take much effort to just have a g...

Re: Friday, April 20, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The correct response for FJ immediately came to mind but it seemed a little too obvious so I took the extra think time to consider Zorro, D'Artagnan and various Arthurian knights, none of which seemed to fit. That puts me at 9/10 for the tournament which is by far my best showing.

Re: Wednesday, April 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I agree the FJ clue could have been worded better. After I figured out what they were looking for I got truth and life pretty quick but it took me to the 29th second to go from via to road to street to path to way (and that only because the verse suddenly popped into my head).

Re: Tuesday, April 17, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The Nutcracker jumped immediately to mind but I was a little nervous about the "excerpts had been popularized" wording as I didn't think that a troupe would perform excerpts of a ballet. Quickly decided that the music stood up well enough on its own that that was what was being referenced. (Ack, wha...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

So how did you know to go to him? Lucky guess? As others have said, it just made sense to piece together from what I already knew about him. There aren't that many immortal warriors (as opposed to gods) that are well known so it was the only answer that made sense. Whereas I just saw nothing to pie...
