Re: Friday, February 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It was absolutely INFURIATING me that they were letting Jon get away with the lack of "What is" as long as they did. Did they ever give someone that much leniency before? Like misspelling in the FJ! round the show has rules. You can botch phrasing in the J! round and Alex will remind you more than ...

My public thanks to the denizens of j-board for teaching me several months ago that mideast country + cedar = Lebanon. My kneejerk response was Israel but it was quickly corrected. Also, my eyes read Kerouac but for some reason my brain was trying to process Cormac McCarthy. No idea why I did that o...

Frustrating FJ for me as I instagot as far as "Not Churchill, the other guy" and then spent the next 29 seconds trying to remember his name. Classic brain freeze.

Next TD, I’m doing reverse-reverse-reverse-psychology, instead of the reverse-reverse-psychology I used on this one.

Literature is not an especially strong suit of mine but I loved this FJ category and clue. It took me a full 25 seconds following various trains of thought before I shouted out Jane Eyre in triumph, only to realize they were looking for the author. Got as far as Bronte before time ran out but doubt ...

If there is room in the poll, I'd be curious how many of us negged on Admirable Admirals for $2k with "Nimitz".

This admiral's tombstone at Arlington National Cemetery calls him the "Father of the Nuclear Navy"

It took no longer than "This 150- by 2.5-mile area" for me to get FJ, prefaced by Korea just in case there are other DMZs I am not aware of. I think I must have recently been exposed to this fact though I have no specific recollection of how or when - I'm just glad that it stuck.

I paused the game when the "greater than" category started - for the life of me, I could not figure out what was "greater" about it. Basically an awards winner category. But cheers to the writers for an interesting board. Jeers to having 10 unrevealed clues. I enjoy a clever set of categories as mu...

I had no clue on FJ!. Gertrude Stein wouldn't leave my mind despite my repeatedly telling her that she's long dead. According to poets.org, GS died in 1946 But she'd be 145 right now, so that's like two people in their 70's. :) If there were two of her that would explain the 20-22 hours a day of wr...

Thought Sect. of State was obvious. I went hunting for the second. AG never occurred to me, although it probably would have if I had more time to think about it. Went with Education based on the current office holder. Similarly for me, State was an instaget and I struggled to find the second one. I...

I say don't let them be in any more tournaments (they've won enough), but if they want to continue to trade on their J! notoriety they might offer themselves to stand at stud to produce the next generation of greats.

Just a thought...
That is coffee-on-the-keyboard funny - thanks for the laugh.

My wild, stab in the dark guess for final was Denmark. Geography is not my strongest subject. My thinking was Denmark > Greenland > wild guess.

Re: Friday, January 10, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I had "fog-e-y" for the four-letter F-word for an old person - and, looking it up, that's the more common spelling, no? Would have been nice to reference that in the clue. I'm half-kidding here, but my secondary answer was "fart". I mean, an "old fart" is a stodgy old gentleman, isn't it? You don't...

I missed the first couple minutes so maybe this was addressed at the top of the show, but what was the deal with the retro look of the clue board? I can't say I was a fan of that.

Not a final, but since this is where we are putting our homemade questions. This one is dumb, but it came to mind and I was hoping to find a way to word it so it might not be so dumb? Coastline makes up the highest percentage of what US state's border? Hawaii - 100% is coastline :D there may be no ...

Same. Considered and discarded Butterball, ended up going with Stouffer's even though I was 95% sure it was wrong.
