Re: Tuesday, May 8, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

FJ was an instaget, primarily because we went to London a few years ago. We had wanted to see The Globe, but couldn't fit it in. Did see it from the Thames on a river cruise, though.

Not sure if it would have clicked without the trip or not, though.

I couldn't get going on FJ. I ended up saying Pullman just on the off chance there was a movie about Pullman, WA I'd never heard of.
I, too, got stuck on the railroad theme; was racking my brain trying to think of a movie named "Huntington."

Re: Wednesday, May 2, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm one of the three - along with the contestants, apparently. I'm another -- sorta. I listened to some of the tunes on Amazon and can't say I get it. Didn't like the slightest bit of what I heard. No clue on FJ. Guessed Jefferson just to say someone. I went off on a similar tangent - James Monroe....

Re: Thursday, April 26, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Funny, I had precalled "USFL," thinking of the anti-trust lawsuit they had against the NFL. This was an instaget for me; I actually recall that the candy bar when I was a child still being made by Curtis, so the name stuck (they sold it off in 1964). And I had heard about the "daughter of Grover Cle...

Re: Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Add me as one who said "Salty Dog" for the grapefruit alcoholic drink. It seems to be semi-popular at a lot of resorts I have been to. Also, a question about the "Swiss Army" response. I said "Victorinox," which is the manufacturer/distributor of all things Swiss Army. Would that have been acceptable?

Re: FJs for the 4/16/18 week

Wed - Easy get from childhood memory. Turned out to be a game of telephone - It's always been "the way, the truth, and the LIGHT". Oops. (actually Light is much more poetic imho). Not so poetic in Latin -- via et veritas et lux. BTW, that's how I always had remembered it, too, but I know "Vita" was...

Re: Thursday, April 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I fixated on the year and the "shrine" part and totally overlooked the "folded flag." Never thought about a cemetery. at all and guessed Washington Monument because a) I believe it may be considered a shrine and b) IIRC it was completed late in the Civil War (which was widely considered a gesture o...

Re: Wednesday, April 18, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

It was funny when the Georgia Tech guy got the clue about the lyrics to Alabama's fight song. Bama and Tech were in the same conference for many years and were bitter rivals. Tech left the SEC in 1964 and they have only met a few times since. But the old rivalry is why they get a shoutout in the fi...

Ouch. Rebecca. That heart response is going to smart for a while. Dang. Props to William for eking out a win in a close match. This was a case where it helped to be old rather than a college student; I remember the news of the first heart transplant (1967) when it happened; I learned later that oth...

Re: Thursday, April 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

My first FJ was Versailles, but I realized it came to be much later than the 1500s. I remembered from touring the Louvre that it had been a palace (seems that Paris is full of recycled palaces), so I went with that. BTW, if you want to go to Versailles, it's an easy (and cheap) train ride from Paris...

Knew Challenger Deep, never heard of a Challenger sub, but the first bit of knowledge was all that was required. Those of us with gray hair are probably more familiar with the Trieste as the pioneering Marianas Trench exploration submarine. edit: After looking it up I do recall David Cameron's sub....

Re: Tuesday, March 27, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

1960s NO. 1 SONGS was the category and of course Alex had to throw in, “You’re too young to remember.” The Beatles? Never heard of them. The FJ clue had a lot to process in 30 seconds. "Hard Day's Night" came to mind immediately (along with several others, including "Working in a Coal Mine" - which...

Re: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I spent most of the think music struggling between Fountainhead and the correct answer (which I ended up going with). I did that, too, but seemed to think The Foundtainhead was a 1940s novel; certainly was before Atlas Shrugged . If they hadn't said that it was a female author, I never would have c...

Re: Monday, March 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Anyone else go for Medicaid? I thought of Medicare right away, but for some reason talked myself out of it. It was one of those where after the 30 seconds was up I had no idea why I thought Medicaid was the better answer, but that's the X factor the time limitation creates. Medicare and Medicaid ca...

I got it right, but didn’t really think it was old enough to be “classic”.
Same here - except for the getting it right part.
If it's written before I was born and is required reading in many schools, I suppose that makes it a classic.

On the other hand, it's not hard to find explanations of the difference between the Italian greyhound and the whippet. I guess the judges decided they are so close it's not fair to ask someone to tell them apart with a picture... As long as an Italian greyhound is at all similar to an English greyh...

Pippi was my SWAG -- I'll take it.
Same here. The "daughter's" part of the name made me think Scandinavia/Icelandic, and the only on I was familiar with in KidLit was Pippi.

The players all missing did not give play-along folks a chance to see if first name alone was sufficient. I wrote both to leave no doubt. If anyone had written just the last name that woulda/coulda/shoulda been a neg. I suspect the contestants were told during the pre-FJ! break that a last name onl...

The guinea pig clue made me think of my favorite quotes from the Eddie Murphy version of Dr. Doolittle.

Chris Rock, voicing the guinea pig, says "How come they call me a guinea pig? I'm not pork and I'm not Italian!"

I think dhkendall’s signature line is apt to describe Betsy’s run so far. Among other adjectives... Frustrating when many on this board would walk to Culver City to be a contestant and TPTB choose those who don't even try to win. Also frustrating when a comic book character who has appeared i...
