Re: Monday, January 30, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

We discuss regional bias in the clues quite a bit and I wonder if this FJ falls into that bucket. I don't recall the curriculum when I was in school devoting much time to when the various colonies were established and by whom, although it's very possible that we did learn this and I've forgotten. I...

Oglethorpe is one of those names that either sticks with you from learning American history in middle or high school - or it doesn't. I'm guessing it should get about 75% in the poll, notwithstanding only one contestant getting it right. I wonder if Joe or Valerie have ever visited Savannah? Same h...

Re: Monday, January 23, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I got FJ in about five seconds, but (a) I am a toonhead, and (b) I know 60s theater. WAOTBBW was probably the biggest song out of the Silly Symphonies, and I knew the Virginia Woolf play and movie were in the mid 60s (IIRC, they sang the song, modified, in the play), so it all clicked.

My closed captioning read "[imitating Boris Karloff as Dracula] Dracula, yes." Of course, Alex was imitating Bela Lugosi as Dracula...Unless the captioner thought the impression was so bad it sounded like Boris Karloff. Might as well be imitating Bob Dylan as Dracula.:) Mukund was telling Alex his ...

I knew Orono because the town next door is the same as my last name. That and the U Maine's men's ice hockey is to that sport what Bama is to football.

The fact that all three of them missed it makes me wonder if maybe they didn't go by there (and shame on the organizers if they did skip Arlington), Meh. For any visit under two weeks, I'd take another two hours in one of the Smithsonian museums over driving by the Pentagon. Or just have them watch...

Hula is "sensual"? Many of the ancient kahiko hula are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xr1Wd17w-g One thing I remember from going to a luau in Maui (Old Lahaina Luau, which some consider the best and most authentic) was when they went through the history of the hula. The earlier versions were pre...

There are many sports that have world team competitions that are called the World Cup, but I think soccer is the only one asked about on Jeopardy. [/url] I think that, generally, when just "World Cup" is used, it's accepted as the global soccer championship, just as "World Series" refers to the cha...

Oooh, they mixed things up with FJ today. I'll be interested to see the get rate. This would have been a good one for the finals. Yeah, it's been way too long since I've read the book. You're a better man than I, Gunga Din. I've never read the book nor seen any movie version, but did read a synopsi...

Re: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

With all the problems she had with the signaling button at the start (I think she got some coaching on that during the break), I am glad Jasmine played herself into contention for a wild card. I agree a lack of familiarity with the periodic table may have hurt her. I'm familiar with the periodic ta...

I know Macon GA primarily because I'm from The Deep South. However, it's had one of the more clever names for several versions of a minor-league ice hockey team:

I had a big ol laugh when omgwheelhouse pulled his "what is aleve?". Sabrina just topped that I think. I probably would've had the same answer under the lights  Here at home, after wasting too much time trying to parse "structure" + "living creatures", the "half the size of Texas" bit finally ...

Lost the Descartes/Pavlov coin flip. Should have listened a little more closely to the siren song of the Cartesian plane. Do you mean Descartes/Pascal maybe? Pascal was the other one I thought of for a 17th century work titled Geometrie . What does an acorn say when it grows up? Geometry! I kill me...

On a side note, feels very weird watching the Teen Tournament considering the fact that I'm no longer able to play it :( Weirder than watching yourself play in it? That definitely takes the cake in terms of weirdness! Actually that's more surreal than weird, from my experience. Especially in a room...

Don't think anyone has posted who got it because they know their state birds (me neither). I've been vaguely thinking about learning them recently, since they do seem to pop up pretty regularly. Perhaps this is another vote in that column. I was a bit worried when I saw the category -- other than t...

SWAG for me -- knowing the story of how the Mormons went to Utah (and its gulls) kind of pointed me there. That, and figuring gulls would hang out around a Great Salt Lake.

Not happy about the Csonka TS though, and not just because I'm a football fan and grew up watching American Gladiators. Same here, and not just because I'm old. I remember seeing Csonka playing with the World Football League's Memphis Southmen vs. the Birmingham Vulcans. Sadly, that game was the la...

Now ... what I found I really had a question about was: in city nicknames, there was the clue "City of David", correct? If I'm not mistaken, Vivek answered Jerusalem and it was accepted. I thought the "City of David" was Bethlehem. Anyone else note this or have any thoughts? David kind of got aroun...

Can't say I precalled this, but I thought "I wonder if this is going to be a David Bowie song?" Of course, between the clue and having Bowie on the brain gave me an instaget. I do recall reading that the Beeb using the Bowie music for the moon landing, but without the mental Bowie lead-in I might ha...
