Re: Friday, May 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

New record. This is the kind of game in which I really wanted him to find all the DDs to see what kind of bets he would make. Only thing is I wonder if he would have been able to come up with "pruning hooks." That was a rough one, wasn't it? Not something you're likely to guess if you don't know it...

Re: J! in the Media

There's a brief interview with James in the latest Sports Illustrated. No, not the swimsuit issue. Quite a bit on his sports gambling techniques and how it was applied to J!

Re: Thursday, May 16, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Anyone else sing along to the disco category? .... .... ...just me? Hmph. Instaget FJ. Maybe he was gunshy after missing two DDs, but I'd have gone all-in if I were Conor. I guess it doesn't make his job that much harder tomorrow. Conor did a nice job with his 1996 baseball signing story although I...

The Sergei Eisenstein question should have been $7,000 instead of $20,000. Stephen Friedrich: T. S. Eliot was English I believe. Bruce Springsteen: BORN IN THE USA!!! Me: Actually, American born naturalized British citizen. ;) Stephen: I think that's the poem of ... that came on a path of forest, "...

Re: Reretaken Down

I ran a quick analysis of the numbers from my user profile.

We are nearing (or perhaps just passed) 300,000 postings to the board. Rounding errors, you know.

I was more surprised to find that I still have posted about 1 in 150 posts to the board despite being much less active over the last 3 years.

Re: FJs for the 4/29/19 week

 :( :( :( Bad week. I spent all my time on Friday trying to come up with something that took the financial aspect of the clue metaphorically. When they panned James on the camera, it seemed on a surface level like he was befuddled halfway through as well, though of course I have ...

Re: Friday, May 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I have done some calculating. According to my numbers, through 22 games, in locked games, if James had bet the maximum he could for FInal Jeopardy, and still be guaranteed to win, instead of betting meaningful numbers, he would have acquired an additional $46,687. That is a lot to leave on the tabl...

Re: Question about game scheduling

My guess would be that after S & P selects the games, TPTB go back say that they have a category (not originally included) that they'd like to insert for a certain date. After review, S & P randomly selects the category to be replaced.

Just a guess.

So the name was literally the only TOM Literally, no. I shouldn't be surprised you've forgotten this already, but European island nation was also there. Again. Because Iceland is the only island in all of Europe, right? The only island nation with a significant Nordic populace. Oh, crap, I give up!

For me, FJ was a toss-up between Bermuda Triangle and Sargasso Sea, not really able to lock in one over the other
Two reasons:

A. The Sargasso Sea was named by sailors who encountered it a couple hundred years before and,

B. Why would a "pulp magazine" be interested in the Sargasso Sea?

Big area in Russia 10,000 sq. mi. ==/== "big area" (The UP in MI is 16,000+ sq. mi.) It is if you have zero clue how big 10,000 square miles is. That could be the size of Mars, Minnesota, Monaco, or Merdian Mall. The other part of the clue that screamed "NOT SIBERIA" was that the clocks were moved ...

Not even a little bit

I would have gotten 37 on this one.

2) beats the crap out of my "angry sangria"

This is probably the worst I've done since the online test started. Only 38 out of 50. ... One surprising get - I thought Hugo wrote "The Count of Monte Cristo" and expected it to be wrong, only to find out it was right (although I didn't include "pere"). Agreed on degree of difficulty. 37 here. Um...

Diet for $2000 brought a smile to my face. I've been to Porvoo. Don't recall the Diet being mentioned.

Re: Tuesday, March 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

At least Dave wrote down the name of a fish! I'm a bit surprised that Salmon P. Chase is not better known here on the board. As a child, I looked him up because I had read that he was depicted on the now-defunct $10,000 bill. If I'm remembering correctly, that was the largest U.S. denomination ever...
