Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

After having just sort of congratulated myself on my musical with-itness, I see the headline "How did Bad Bunny become the world's biggest pop star?" and I realize I still have a ways to go.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Guggenheim, which I am a bit upset at myself about. I dismissed the guggenheim museum thinking it more of a classic museum (I've never been to any of them). The bit about Guggenheim having lived in the U.S. and Europe was a big hint on that one since her namesake museums are in NYC and Bilbao, Spai...

I thought that one could have used a little more clue.

So Fred thought "think" was a four-letter word. I think that underlines a problem in our society.

Re: Thursday, December 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Poll request on 100th day of the year = April 10th. I'm curious to see how many people had that at their fingertips.... Not on the fingertips but easy to suss out in time. First three months: 31+28+31=90, thus April 10. That was my method. I might not have been fast enough, but I'd have surely have...

Re: Wednesday, December 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

1000 paces must be a kilometer, right? Wrong. That was ENORMOUS negbait that I'm surprised no one fell for. To the Romans, it was a distance of 1,000 paces It really wasn't a great clue, because they meant the Roman pace, which, per collinsdictionary.com, "measured from the heel of one foot to the ...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

I guessed "boroughs" because I remember reading about the old rotten borough system. They seem to be similar to constituencies but not exactly the same. Anyway, I didn't need it so I can take a relaxed approach to educating myself.

"Riding" I've never head of. It sounds pretty far out.

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020

Since I knew both answers, I was annoyed to see the word "corvid" appear immediately after the "corvettes" clue. I did manage a lucky win on defense, despite rejecting my overnight inspiration of "breaks the internet". Not sure why but I must have heard it as a phrase without knowing its source.

My first thought was "English Channel" but I was able to dismiss it. Ended up going with the Bay of Biscay That's an in-this-world guess, as the Bay is about 369 miles at its greatest length. Of course, you can reach Spain from France in a single footstep if you choose the right start and end points.

Re: Monday, November 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Man oh man, I just realized what an opportunity they missed for the AUTHORS' MIDDLE NAMES category: Emmy winner George Trebek. Would they accept "Alex"? Playing from the thread, meta-considerations led me eventually to the right FJ answer, though at rather a casual pace for competitive purposes. 19...

Thought about Nambia, but it is neither far enough down the alphabet, landlocked, has a coastline, or exists. Also, they'd never ask about Nambia in FJ because it looks too much like an infamous acronym. Perhaps they never ask about it because there's a sizable risk of having to neg someone for eli...

Yeah, "California-born" must have a ruler-outer. "Funny Girl" was quite some years earlier, but one might know Streisand as an Oscar winner without remembering which film it was for. A "sojourn" is a stay somewhere, not the journey there. It looks like Ms. Truth was misnamed. I thought the Barton cl...

Re: Monday, November 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I will end with one last post on this topic as it is not fair to hijack this thread to discuss a game from more than a decade ago. If I were the writer, I would justify the clue as:- The word "jungle" and the phrase "the call of..." are already in the clue, and that should eliminate both Kipling an...

Was debating between Cordell Hull and Marshall and went with Hull as felt a better fit for the word peace (~ UN) and the category (longest serving Sec. of State). I can live with this miss but I agree with the previous post. When in doubt, go with the simpler option. I hate clues like this when no ...

Looks like Thorsten is taking off the entire Thanksgiving week. Had I known, I wouldn't have checked the page just now (I try not to look at Friday's results until I have a chance to redeem myself). But I did actually manage an ugly win (at least, it wasn't conventionally beautiful), as my opponent...

Re: Thursday, November 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I didn't like the wording of the clue for which the correct response was "wastes". Mercury and asbestos are not wastes, per se. I would have been happier with the clue if it had ended, "...these, which might contain asbestos or mercury". That's a good point. For me the difficulty was more simple, a...
