Re: Friday, November 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Potpourri was a strange category. Never heard of either person in the $200 clue, and filling in "Na Na Hey Hey" seemed overvalued unless they were hoping to trap someone into forgetting the "hey"s and just going for "Na Na Na Na." (Whatever, I'll take the extra $800 Coryat.) I suspect that some clu...

Re: Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Bageled on Voiceovers & Crime Dramas. :x ^_^/ . Though I was proud to come up with "Emily Blunt" as a guess for EB. Playing top-to-bottom from the Archive, I guessed Agatha Christie (thinking they wanted a human) rather than Orient Express. It turns out that she was born in 1890, but her own metaph...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020
On the play, the first thought that came into my mind was 'Waiting for Godot'. But then I saw 'English-language debut' and thought that wouldn't have been a distinction for a Beckett play, so I wracked my brain to come up with another answer that would've been written in another language. Maybe you...

Re: Reretaken Down
Has anyone else got this email? It's obviously a fraught decision and I wouldn't like to rush in without consulting with the most informed opinion. But do please note the tight deadline. Postscript: edited out personally identifying info. Again, that deadline. Maybe I can apply for an extension, as ...

Re: Monday, November 16, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
One of Eugene Finerman's unarchived games featured an FJ something like "Renaissance man, 'he snatched lightning from the heavens and the scepter* from tyrants'". I think I got that one, and I definitely got this one. * I'm not actually sure how they spelled "scepter" but I'd hate to think that upwa...

Re: Friday, November 13, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I didn't think they'd say "monument" twice to ask for Washington Monument, so...the Minuteman statue (1874, as it turns out. And rendered as "Minute Man", though still pronounced as the unit of time). I did run the yearbook pics cat from the archive. I hope I'd have done as well if I'd looked at the...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020
3 MCW (petroglyph, ren and stimpy, lincoln) must take more time must take more time must take more time Ren and Stimpy were my immediate reaction, but deeper thought paid off. Since they are a dog and a cat, "not even human" should be enough to explain why they aren't role models. The fact that the...

Re: Wednesday, November 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It took me well over 30 seconds to talk myself out of my first instinct, so I'm counting this as a get. But their choice of "birthday" over "anniversary" had me (eventually) looking for something pregnancy-related. Annie Leibovitz and Fran Lebowitz are distressingly similar names, but "LEE-bo-vits" ...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020
Q5. Never heard of egg cream, is this a regional (non-New England or non-Southern) thing? Went with cream soda. I got this from MST3K (episode: Squirm). The guy who ordered it is from New York, but it's also a 1976 movie so maybe not regional but ...era-al? time-al? Definitely a New York thing and ...

Re: Learned League 87 -- Nov/Dec 2020
Given my Bronx location, I was surprised to be given 3 for Joe DiMaggio. I mean, that's a field goal right there. I feel for the LLama who reported a miss on the Austen question for giving a wrong last name. "First name only" might have been too leading, but had the Q asked simply for the book's tit...

  :( :( ---- :( ---- The three countries came to me in an instant, but the instant was slow to arrive. My high school Spanish only went up to the wrist. I've seen Princess Bride just once, and in the theatre, so I probably slept through much of it.

Re: Wednesday, November 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I think this FJ was written mainly for the home audience. I did better with this one that asked only for two of three 5-letter state capitals. I suppose they felt these were three famous European countries but three rather obscure state capitals, as if a Jeopardy player would make such a distinction.

Re: Wednesday, November 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
[Edited to ask: am I "overdoing it" with spoiler tags? I am surprised to see that a couple of posts above mine give away the FJ answer, which I thought wasn't something to do here, especially before an episode has aired everywhere.] Typically TheFJguy's post follows the two placeholders by the Arch...

Nightmare FJ. On the surface it's "easy" but I got 2 out of 3, and was then struggling to get the one on the other side of the map. I had it finally, but not within 30 seconds. Yeah, one of my least favorite type. In general, it's asking a lot to name all three of anything in 30 seconds. In my case...

Re: Monday, November 2, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Red and blue states have been around since the 70's, which was why I dismissed it and had no answer. I think it's more recently, though, that their respective meanings have become fixed. I do remember* that sometime on Election Night 1980, ABC's David Brinkley commented "it's beginning to look like...

I read Tuesday's carelessly; didn't really process "document".
"Fair housing" sounded odd to me. I don't know why.
