Re: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

We have a thread for intellectual pet peeves. One of my pet peeves is music artists and their exhorbitant prices for song rights forcing crimes like that version of “We’ve Got the Beat” used today in the WOMEN OF MUSIC clue. I’ve heard that song, let’s not go as high as 1,000 though higher than 100...

Re: FJs for the 4/17/17 week

Thought of Zola's letter immediately on Friday, but didn't realize that one could refer to it simply as "J'accuse!" I thought the writers would ask for something with a proper title rather than something that could only be referred to as "that letter that started with J'accuse!" so I eventually land...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

12 Years a Slave was already represented on MD7Q2.

I had the same thought on .tv, but it seemed that there already was a (blurry) .tv just to the left. Didn't help me in figuring out what else it could be, though...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

I can't believe that my opponent gave me two points for the Inquisition. I thought that was easier than the self-portrait question precisely because I also waffled between portrait and self portrait (fortunately picking the right one). Anyway, I didn't expect the two point gift from my opponent (cu...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

Was there any sort of TOM for Georgia over Armenia? (I got it right on a coin flip.) I chose Georgia because it felt more likely than Armenia to have a native name very different from the English name (turns out they both do), and also because Sakartvelo had more similarity to Georgian surnames tha...

Makes sense. After the results were revealed, I'm kicking myself a bit for the numbers I set. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't worry about it now since I can't do anything else about it.
And this would be an example of something you shouldn't say until the match day is over.

If I went through a fast food drive-thru in Dover, Delaware, but otherwise did not stop, does that count as having "set foot"?

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

Does anyone know how group selection works for mini leagues? I was looking through the players in my group in the Extracts ML and noticed 7 of the 12 were in an A rundle in LL71. I thought that seemed like a strange distribution if any kind of "balancing" was used in the selection. It's random. The...

Re: Friday, December 30, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

For Best Picture winners about some who (even if chances are next to none) could have won a Nobel who's on the list? Gandhi Patton Emile Zola others? Gandhi was who I was referring to in my comment above. He probably would have won a Nobel had he not been assassinated. If you think of both A Beauti...

Re: Wednesday, December 28, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

For those Narnia fans among you, let me plug Michael Ward's book The Narnia Code, which makes the case (quite convincingly) that Lewis had a secret master plan in mind for the 7 chronicles based on the seven medieval planets. It is a great piece of scholarship, very readable, and deepens one's appre...

Re: LL71: For The LLamas

Also, I was debating between some combination of tin, copper, and zinc on the brass question. I went with those first two. If it helps .... I've learned to keep them straight using The Rule of the Single Z: copper + tin = bron Z e copper + Z inc = brass Or, tin is heavier than zinc. Bronze is heavi...

Re: Thursday, December 15, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Yesterday someone mentioned the clues about Death Valley and the Dead Sea along with FJ mentioning someone's death . Today we had a whole category about people dying and Alex even said she was "still alive" going into FJ. I know he says that a lot and he didn't mean anything by it, but it is a litt...

Re: LL70: For the LLamas

Ypsilanti is just trying to come up with a claim to fame that can eclipse having the world's most phallic building. What, did the People's Daily building in Beijing burn down? The contest was in 2003. Clearly China was looking to wrestle the crown from the U.S. when they built the People's Daily bu...

Re: LL70: For the LLamas

On the painting, Mexican narrowed it down to two people for me and, not knowing Rivera's work, it became "click on this and see if it looks like a Kahlo work or not". You can recognize Kahlo herself in the painting. Of course, that didn't prevent me from putting Rivera (the theme of the painting fi...

Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Re: LL70: For the LLamas

Thorsten may also have considered the name Southaven to be a small hint that it was south of the desired city. (Of course you could also take the name to mean that it's on the southern coast, in which case Mobile would again be a good guess. But that would mean that there's a shore town larger than ...

Re: LL70: For the LLamas

I was trying to recall Gilbert Stuart's name, but as it wasn't coming I went with Leutze (of Washington Crossing the Delaware fame). As I filled it in last, I failed to notice how close it was to Lizzie (McGuire). Wouldn't have pulled Trumbull either way. It took me fffoooorrrrrever to recall Stuar...

Re: Monday, September 12, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I got the FJ instantly anyway, but wanted to ask, why is the "2004 disaster" bit a clue for Thailand? There were lots of countries hit by the tsunami, and Thailand was only the fourth-most affected.
