Re: Monday, October 7, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I've tried yoga a couple of times at Corepower, so that was an easy get for me just from the name. And "swoosh" should be a pavlov for Nike. FJ was a tossup between prayer and thanksgiving for me. I had a recollection that Thanksgiving is associated with Lincoln, so my coin landed on the wrong side....

The opera I saw at Sydney is Pavlovian for Mussorgsky + opera.
I'd post the answer, but modesty forbids.
Or maybe you're just not good enuv.
Ok. Fine. You made me learn things again.

Still doesn't make your puns funny, though.

And now I have to go look up Rubaiyat and learn about that work thanks to several of you.
Aha! FitzGerald's paraphrase of the Rubaiyat is the source of:
A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thee.

Yes, I'm a bit of a simpleton when it comes to literature. But I'm learning.

Re: Friday, October 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I missed by a long way in FJ, picking The Odyssey in a coin toss with The Iliad. At least it could be described as a two part work. And yes, I know it's Greek rather than from the Arabic world. 1001 Nights never crossed my mind. And now I have to go look up Rubaiyat and learn about that work thanks ...

Re: Thursday, October 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. I have to agree with Kevin's all-in wager on the last DD. He was only risking $4400, with the leader at 4600 and 2-3 times that still available in the bottom two rows on the board. You've got to go with the odds even when the game has been rough. Like others, I ...

Or maybe she just misspoke or had a brain fart. Clearly she knew it; she just didn't know it accurately enough. Maybe someday you won't be so harsh on people and contestants will come here to tell us about their experience.

Re: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Lots of asking for the full title of the category, slowing things down a bit. Then there's the inherent delay for triple stumpers and wrong answers. Toss in some thought before asking for the next clue, and we get a number of clues left on the board. My first reaction to FJ was asking myself for a R...

Re: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm very surprised at "spiracles" having a lower dollar value than "thorax" in the insect category. Spiracles was worth $2000, thorax was $1200 - that seemed relatively correct. Then I mis-remembered the clues. I thought spiracles was at the top of the column, not the bottom. Sorry about that. I gu...

Re: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm very surprised at "spiracles" having a lower dollar value than "thorax" in the insect category. That smells like a last-minute question substitution. I wonder if anyone at the taping would comment on any irregularities during that game. Maybe Alex started to read the wrong clue or a technical is...

Re: Monday, September 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Presidential election years = Olympic years (Summer only more recently). That was my hook. I'm much better at the former than the latter. I wasn't sure exactly when, but I knew both Helsinki and London had hosted the Olympics in the general post-WW2 period. With that in mind, it was a very short tri...

Re: Gameplay Strategies

For FJ bet according to the wagering calculator and don't overthink it. http://www.j-archive.com/wageringcalculator.php I personally find the wagering calculator too difficult to apply under pressure. If you don't that's fine. But it's got too much "if this, then that" for me. I prefer the method a...

Re: FJs for the 9/23/19 week

This week clearly played pretty tough. The highest get rate from boardies is less than 70%. And the players didn't do very well, either.

My first box of shame in a long time.

Re: Thursday, September 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm surprised it took so long in the thread to get around to the wrong answer from New York. I went there almost immediately and couldn't shake it. Most frustrating to me is the fact that the whole "world something means not USA" was discussed earlier this week. And I let that slip away so quickly. ...

Pele took me almost instantly to Hawaii. I spent the other 29.5 seconds unsuccessfully trying to remember the name of the volcano. I was very surprised that none of the players were in the right area. Not at all surprised by at least one going to Yellowstone.

Re: Monday, September 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

No hope for me on FJ. I know nothing about Chagall other than he's a painter. Was left to randomly guess early 1960s musicals. Picked West Side Story because Jesus Christ, Superstar and The Sound of Music didn't strike me as potential titles of paintings. Now I can try to add his Russian and Jewish ...

Re: Friday, September 20, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My very flawed FJ process was simple: run through the current bills. Washington, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson, Grant, Franklin. Eliminate Washington - couldn't be described as a foe. Eliminate Lincoln and Grant - came around later (flaw one - that doesn't mean they couldn't have changed part of Hamilt...

Re: Thursday, September 19, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I need to expand my definition of “toy”. I always think of a Rubiks cube as a puzzle rather than a toy or game. My first thought for FJ was erector set. Haven’t seen that mentioned yet. Also thought of Lego and tinker toys. Didn’t like any of them, figuring they were all older than the 1970s. Picked...

Re: Wednesday, September 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The Maltese Falcon hint was useless to me. Once you get past Humphrey Bogart, "Play it, Sam," and "Of all the gin joints ..." I've exhausted my knowledge of the film. Your knowledge of the film is even less than you think it is... ;) Hey, 1 out of 3 isn't bad. OK, yeah it is. ;) Oh yeah. It’s bad. ...
