The core problem with Alex's pronunciation

Sorry, Alex, but the "p” in a name like the fictional "Omnicorp," or the sadly all-too-real Newscorp, is not silent.

The "ps" in corps, such as United States Marine Corps, are silent.

The former is an abbreviation, the latter a word, and each has nothing to do with the other.

Jeop-House Rock

    :( :( :( Gracie Mansion for Friday Ditto. Mount Vernon. I suppose I should've suspected it was too stodgy an answer, but Elvis associations didn't occur to me (despite having had a conversation the day before about Kurt Russell -- with whom I found ...

In Xeno Veritas

Re the "Texas Wine" category and the clue whose correct response was "What's Red River Valley"?

It should have been added that it's also the White River Valley when you're having poultry or fish.

Armenia: a nation of adjectives

And unless I'm missing something, neither do[es] "Artesian". It's simply that [it] end[s] in "-ian"... Yeah, they should save it for that ever-popular category called "Sounds Like It's Armenian." Nitpick in the Astronomy category: Mars doesn't speed away from Earth. Planets closest to the Sun move ...

Go West, young Egg

American Literature Published in 1925, it still sells 500,000 copies a year & was on the bestseller lists in 2013. What is The Great Gatsby ? Andrew said The Old Man and the Sea . My first thought was "Gone with the Wind," but I also knew that it was published in 1936 and that Margaret Mitchell onl...

What's old is new

The last thing the show needs is someone chosen to appeal to a younger, hipper audience. A week of Celebrity Jeopardy! is about all the dumbed-down show anybody should have to endure.

Though he's four years older than Alex, I nominate Dick Cavett.

All for Waltz, and Waltz for All

I was going to say something similar, but I'd change the first word of your sentence to "less". For J! purposes, "Johann Strauss" is sufficiently specific. You don't need to know that the Blue Danube guy had a less famous father with the same name. Yes, you do. Who wrote The Three Musketeers , Alex...

The response was accepted under Valse pretenses

Surprised there was not a BMS on the Strauss answer in the Opera category, given there is Johann and Richard, the latter being a more well known opera composer. More critically, the distinction needed to be made between Johann Strauss (1804-1849) and his son, Johann Strauss II (1825-1899), both of ...

The buccaneer stops here

Judges: DOUBLE LETTERS $1200: "An importer of illegal goods, without payment of legal duty (of course)" Would "bootlegger" fit? ("Smuggler" was given - frankly, mine has even more double letters than the given response) I said freebooter (a pirate, smuggler), which is an even better fit than what t...

Gemini Program and the Minnesota Twins: separated at birth in 1961

Sadly, most folks who only have casual knowledge of the Space Race know of Mercury (if only because of The Right Stuff ) and Apollo (because of the moon landings). The intervening Gusmobile Gemini program usually gets forgotten; other than the initial American "Space Walk" of Ed White, most of the ...

I'm gettin' nominated in the mornin'

The full name of the category was Music (Scoring of Music – adaptation or treatment) . "Scoring" is being used here as a synonym for "orchestration." It's not the same as writing a score. There was a separate award for Music (Music Score – substantially original) . The Sherman Brothers won that yea...

What's that supposed to mean? If you want to dispute what I've just posted, fine, do so, but the personality that thinks it calls for an ad hominem attack is what really sucks.

I've grown accustomed to their mistakes

Andre Previn did not write the score, or any score, to My Fair Lady -- Frederick "Fritz" Loewe did . Previn conducted the score for the movie, adapted some of Loewe's themes as bridging underscoring, and supervised the recording and editing of the soundtrack's music, receiving no screen credit (mean...

The judges' decision on this has always been absolutely coup-coup

Again I return to my chastisement, nay, castigation of the judges over their accepting "coup de gras" in place of coup de grace. At least "Emanciptation" is a non-word that means nothing, whereas gras in place of grace changes meaning utterly. Diogenes? Is that you?[/quote] You've been away from th...

The grace is always greener at the other end of the dictionary

My pet peeve is always going to be spelling judgements in Final Jeopardy. Just require correct spelling already. There was the infamous "Emanciptation Proclamation" penalized, while this year we had "Led Zepplin" go through correctly. I agree. The problems all stem from drawing the line at how much...

Everything's up to date in Television City

Bochco created L.A. Law , and hired Kelley as head writer/story editor. The two of-them 'co-created' Doogie before Kelly went off on his own, and created Picket Fences , which is what really put him on the map. He's 'big' enough that even the people who dislike/don't watch his shows know who he is....
