Re: Monday, April 13, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

My negbait was Menzel instead of Chenoweth. Same here. I thought this one was a total coin toss. I negged with Menzel too. In retrospect, I think they probably would have put in some sort of TOM related to "Frozen" had it been her. Chenoweth, on the other hand, is mainly known for "Wicked," though ...

Re: FJs for the 4/6/15 week

Having lived in New York City since the age of 3 (that's more than half a century) I blush to admit Monday's was the only FJ I missed. Never had occasion to go to the Chrysler Building and of course the word "transport" was a trap I fell for :( At least Williamsburg was ridiculously easy; my favorit...

Re: Tuesday, April 7, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

My pre-calls based on the FJ category were the Fondas and the Hustons. Then my first thought on the reveal was John and Bonnie Raitt, but couldn't figure how John won a Grammy except as being part of a Cast Album and didn't thing that's what they were going for. Finally remembered Natalie Cole's due...

Re: What's My Line?

I work in a used record store, a do a few things there: I grade, clean, and price old vinyl, I used to work in a record store. Back in the 90s I worked p/t at HMV on the upper east side in Manhattan. Sometimes waited on Mayor Giuliani. Glad to hear there still are some record stores in existence. A...

Re: Friday, February 20, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought my big disappointment was not getting to see Queen Victoria for $2000. For a few seconds at the start of DJ, I thought I was getting my personal Clavin board, with Victoria and Broadway being revealed. Love those Broadway clues! And how appropriate for Gilbert & Sullivan to make an appeara...

Re: Tuesday, February 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

This was a board I'd really have fun with. Classical Music? Yes!!! Broadway Musicals for FJ? Hooray! What I couldn't understand was Eric sticking with the category when it was obvious he knew nothing about it...his attempt to pronounce Aida was laughable. When you've got control of the board early i...

I'm surprised Alex didn't take the opportunity to ask the age-old question "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?"

As a New Yorker, the three wrong guesses for Carnegie Hall were particularly painful.

Wonder where Christine came up with Steinway Hall from? It's basically a piano showroom:

Quickly tried to run through two-time Best Actor winners -- Spencer Tracy, Brando, Tom Hanks were the ones that came to mind. Eliminated Tracy, then Hanks (because he'd been mentioned in the game already) and fixed on Brando. Knew Godfather was Best Picture, but couldn't remember the earlier film he...

Re: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Sad to have another trio of contestants leave a classical music category for last, stand and stare and only get through two clues :( Partial compensation with Broadway Musicals for FJ. Bet the farm time! Pleasantly surprised that even one contestant got it. Instaget for me of course, but I can see h...

Trying to think of graffiti artists, only came up with Keith Haring (who's been dead a while) and "Friendly Freddy" who scrawled his name all over NYC in the 1970s. When Banksy's name was revealed it seemed I had heard his name but had not retained it in my mental attic.

My brush with Nielsen (I think it was Nielsen...maybe it was another company?) almost 40 years ago, was invited to keep a diary of radio listening for a month. Never had any sort of box installed.

Re: Monday, December 22, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

It's really fun when you were actually personally acquainted with the FJ response. That's me with author Isaac Asimov, at a Gilbert & Sullivan Society of NY meeting in the 1980s. He was a great devotee of G&S and sometimes performed in our entertainments. He sang the leading role in a pastiche I wro...

Re: Wednesday, December 17, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The movie that was being referred to in FJ was an instaget but I always mentally trip over the title because I saw the reversed sex remake (IT HAPPENED ONE CHRISTMAS) before I ever saw the original and the other day I happened on the musical remake of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (called YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY...

Rooks' accidental marriage story is the plot of W.S. Gilbert's comedy ENGAGED (his most famous non-Sullivan work). In Scotland, it is not necessary to have a minister or other official to marry a couple; they only have to declare they are married before witnesseses. In the course of a rather convolu...

Re: Friday, November 14, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

One of my favorite recent FJs called for an opera led at its premiere by a conductor whose last name started with the letters in the title of the opera. Was pleasantly surprised it was a triple get, even though it was ridiculously easy (to me, at least). Are you sure about that? I revised my origin...

Re: Friday, November 14, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I guess I'm sort of an oddball, because whenever an operatic category appears, I jump for joy. Would have been sorely tempted to go full Clavin. So, strong on opera, weak on math? :) I'm also pretty strong in math; scored 100s in the 10th grade Algebra and 12th grade Trigonometry New York State Reg...
