Re: LearnedLeague 77 - Official Thread

'Past lives' brought Buddha to mind immediately, of course, .... but, then, I got a little too clever by half. Thought that word could sound Korean, and since Kim Jong-Il scored 11 holes in one in his very first round of golf, I thought maybe they're claiming heroic deeds in past lives for the curre...

Re: Tuesday, June 5, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Are the regular clue writers on vacation and the interns are doing the writing? It just seems like the clue quality has gone way down. Why wasn't A-ha accepted? And how the %^&#! are we supposed to get Hercule Poirot out of that hot mess of a FJ? A-ha is a Norwegian band; aha is an English interjec...

47, same as last night. Bad miss with Stanton for Sanger, Ed Sheeran is someone I remain uninterested in, and Neil Gaiman remains outside my ken.

47 for 50. Hestia for Demeter; curse you, mythology. Berlin for Gershwin on a coin flip. Worst, pupil for lens. Already in the pool, so just for fun.

Re: Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I played this FJ off the clue of the day on the Jeopardy site. There, the category was listed as "PHILOSOPHYDESPITE" and the clue read "the title,in this Plato work, Socrates says, 'I shall never alter my ways, not even if I have to die many times.'" My response, after a good thirty seconds, was pre...

Re: Thursday, January 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

CARS is not my kind of category unless it’s about a TV show vehicle or I’d even settle for the Ric Ocasek group. Automobile history? No thank you. I ruled out Ford Mustang, Edsel, and Renault and did not know what to do with the two flags in the clue’s wording. I thought perhaps two guys and scribb...

Re: Tuesday, December 12, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

It seemed to me LaKedra was ringing in peremptorily on the anagram category with confidence she could solve the anagram in the allotted time. Admirable stratagem and exactly what I would have done given the opportunity. Not everyone would hazard those immediate rings, and I wonder if the other conte...

Re: Sad Legal News About a Former Champion

Definitely sounds like a strange situation. :? There is clearly more to this story. Absolutely. Boardies please don't speculate on this matter which is none of our business. I do not believe for one minute that she knowingly did any wrong. She has retained competent counsel who will discover the re...

Wow, I'm drowning in beer. Once more, I lead my Rundle in CAA with 56. So, despite being in the running for a Maso and with a good (for me) DE of .792, I'm flirting with relegation. #ARundleProblems. That was an Extra Special Bitter I drank against you. I don't even like those. Isn't that sacrilegi...

The good news is I drank my first beer this season. My opponent missed a question. The bad news is we tied. Way to trick me, Woof.

Have to admit that line of reasoning did not occur to me. That many people fit the bill to make it 'much' less likely or much less likely than the people with the condition who do not have the procedure?

Re: Millionaire 2017-18 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Just watched the Monday show today. What the hell kind of question was that fractured hip question for such a low level? I saw nothing that could lead to the counterintuitive correct answer. They must have decided they hated that guy. Am I missing something?

My first reaction was 'ah, geez; not etymology.' I often struggle with those, but I got to this one in about 15 seconds, room to spare for writing. I like Nan's down-to-business game play, but she took that dollar the wrong way.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

Well, I certainly fell back to Earth in the 1960s finale. I finished 212th out of 314 with five right (my usual score, but this time there were 12 questions). I would have finished about 40 places higher if I had been confident enough on my Shostakovich answer to make it a money question, but inste...

Just to balance things a little, be it known that I got dap. And I'm old. (I wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.)

I had heard the cuttlefish sepia connection before, but I may have needed the nostalgia bit to parse this. With both, it only took a second.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I also missed the Charlie Brown question, lost 7(5)-9(5). Not my first 9(5) given up this season. Defense has been a mystery to me this season. How could anybody not know statins? Although I could and sometimes did read Peanuts, I could never abide any of those TV specials and never endured more tha...
