Re: Friday, March 5, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got FJ, but took long enough to come up with it to start panicking (which probably lengthened the process still further). I don't even remember how I got it to pop into my mind, but the means don't matter when you've got the end.

Re: Thursday, March 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It sounded like Chauncey worked for NHBB (IAC nowadays), but he works for World Scholar's Cup. I've never heard of that one. It seem like (don't hold me to this, Sg) that everyone who's been on Jeopardy and said their occupation had something to do with trivia or quizzing has lost. :) Only in the s...

Re: Fun with ABC's "The Chase" [Spoilers]

Finally we had someone take the higher offer! Too bad it was followed by two wrong answers. I think $250,000 is very generous for a consolation prize; the British version (where regular winners usually have four-digit earnings) does the Lazarus round for £4,000 as a rule. In the second game, I didn'...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

On the Alaska question my first thought was Gadsden Purchase, and when I let Alaska creep into my mind, I thought it was still during Lincoln's presidency. But slowly 1867 started to feel plausible for Alaska. The one way I had to verify it was to convert the square mileage in the question to acreag...

The OCR read commas for periods and could not handle Ms & Ws.
There's still a "vvas" in J30, and Herodias is "Herodlas" in DJ2.

I was prepared to answer pied piper but then the clue wanted Robert Browning all of a sudden. Who got that one?
I did; I think there was an excerpt of his version in a book of poetry my siblings and I had.

Re: Wednesday, March 3, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Melis added a "Hi" in her FJ! response. It kind of looks like Ayden though I'm not sure about the "e". I know there's a Turkish name Aydın complete with dotless i. I can't see the mystery character as that, but food for thought. Edit: she confirmed on Facebook that it's Aydin, with a dot (pronounce...

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

I went to the uploader's channel and watched Addison Goodson's first game. When I was done I did the "swipe down to refresh" thing on the list of videos, and all but one disappeared.

I thought he said he'd played in 45 countries last year, which I assume is employment?
It seems likely that "last year" means "before the pandemic."
He said "in the past couple years."

Re: New old games in the J! Archive

Who is the missing five timer? Dennis Donohue https://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=2872 He played against all three finalists in his ToC. I bet not a lot of people hold that distinction, although I suppose all you have to do is play against two future finalists in the QF, win or get a...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I almost said quilt, solely because there had been a question about it as an art form a year and a half ago (Harriet Powers was the artist in that question). But then for no reason I decided that "Street Story Silver" had a nice ring to it.

NATIONALITY RHYMES $400: Joy for those of Geneva Any reason not to count my response of Swiss miss instead of the show's Swiss bliss? What's your justification, that "Joy" is a woman's name and hence a Joy can be a "miss"? I suppose the clue could be about folks who really love hot chocolate... ;) ...

 :(

I needed the home of a playwright bit for Avon.
I thought of Zane Grey first, then thought, "It's a $2,000 clue; it can't be that easy" and switched to Louis L'Amour. :/
