those weren't [cryptic crossword] clues, but i guess they were cryptic [crossword clues]. in any event, i enjoyed them. i wish i could say as much for the wordplay category in the first round—after lumbago it was a whole lot of "huh?".

ignorami here, too. In FJ, capitalization doesn't seem to count. everywhere else, too. i can't think of a particularly good reason they still show the clues in all caps, but what are you gonna do? My favorite reference for Silver = AG is the license plate: HI HO AG Here's hoping the plate read HI YO...

Re: Reretaken Down

I heard that and was a bit stunned. He said that the dictionary has it as an alternate pronunciation, so I guess they don't have a choice (probably like nuclear/nookular)? Yeah, I'm assuming that's the reason, but considering Calvary is a place name it seems so wrong. yes, they deserve to be crucif...

I got "The Lottery" right away, remembered Shirley, but ... If I was there, I would've had to write "Shirley _______, the author of "The Lottery". it seems to me that leslie was in the same camp. why else would she write "shirley frates"? fantastic game. i have really been enjoying this week. not o...

Re: Wagering Strategy: Anyone Else Bored Stiff?

i'll acknowledge that wagering is not the most interesting part of jeopardy. but on the rare occasions that you get two* players who both know what they are doing, and know that they both know what they are doing, in a non-crush situation, there are really interesting things that can happen. strateg...

the 17x31 was a kevin der puzzle to commemorate a particular anniversary. not one of my favorite kevin der puzzles (but that is a very high standard—he's an excellent constructor), but it was certainly a memorable one.

17th? i'll take it, considering every instinct i had in this game was totally wrong. at one point i had moscow down for both the security council question and the former ssr question, and tashkent down for the bookends question. "and i changed them all!" he said sheepishly.

Re: Happy 100th birthday Crossword Puzzles

Google doodle acknowledged it with a fun little 15x15 puzzle. Took me almost 15 minutes but I'm not used to solving on a PC and had trouble entering letters sometimes. I'll bet the experts like joon, mark et al can easily beat 10 minutes on it. 2:40 here. fastest i've seen so far is 2:13 by david p...

Re: Question One: Six of one...

At least, I think BDJ got it to 6. I poked around the web a bit and couldn't be sure. Little help? floor(exp(exp(0))) + floor(exp(exp(0))) + floor(exp(exp(0))) true. exp(x) is e^x. so e^0 is 1, and exp(exp(0)) is e^1 = e, which is about 2.7. floor rounds down, so floor(exp(exp(0))) = 2. i was reall...

Re: Think Different 170: Best Guess!

on #10, what rule should we follow in identifying a team with a state (or more than one state)? or is it anything goes? obviously some are clear-cut but there are sneaky corner cases all over the place.
