i know a little bit about grammer, but i wouldn't call it my most strongest subject. let's see: frasier crane, sideshow bob, ... down periscope? that's all i've got.

5th is also my best showing in a TD. i could have scratched out 3rd if i'd stay clean, but i can't be too upset. thanks to mujason for a very interesting set of questions and congrats to jeff on his nobel peace prize. (did i ever tell you guys i was once named man of the year by time magazine?)

ouch! i had no idea that was nonfiction. it especially hurts because my second choice would have been a singleton (e.a. robinson).mujason wrote:Norman Mailer (while "The Executioner's Song" won for fiction, "The Armies of the Night" won for general nonfiction; sorry)-jpahk

Re: Wednesday, November 20, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Iron Man For All Seasons? Isn't it "A Man For All Seasons"? What happens to the "A"? That one seems like it's cheating the rules of Before & After, even if Jeopardy! doesn't usually care about leading articles. Have they ever done one like that before? That's a good question. I agree that it's chea...

Re: Think Different 168: Miscellaneous
ellen is a constructor, sort of. she has exactly one published crossword credit—and it was a puzzle she and i co-constructed, which ended up in a simon & schuster mega book of crosswords. i doubt you've seen it, but it's possible. (if anyone's interested, you can find it here by searching for "ripst...

Re: Think Different 168: Miscellaneous
Yeah, Ellen was in Wordplay and I think she may even have posted here before. Heck, jpahk's finished in the top ten at the crossword tourney and even he didn't choose it. i didn't choose it precisely because i thought plenty of others would know it. ouch. dan & ellen are, of course, both friends of...

Re: Think Different 168: Miscellaneous
i haven't done a ton of TDs, but the thing that struck me as unusually difficult about this one was its length—with 15 rather specialized questions and only 2 lifelines, almost everybody is going to be taking a neg somewhere. i'm more used to seeing 10-12 questions, or a third lifeline of some sort....

Re: Think Different 168: Miscellaneous
I was hoping that each contestant would have been exposed to at least one of these popular songs this year. exposed to? yes. (two of them, in fact.) but not enough to identify either from a lyric. very glad i chose to SHEEP this question. that said, i think the "mark of honour" sentiment is pretty ...

I pavloved Gehry last night. That's why I got it wrong! Welcome aboard, Eli. Any friend of Joon's is ... well, we'll let you stay anyway. And congratulations! welcome aboard indeed, and congrats! nice get on FJ—i certainly didn't recognize the name of the river, but "electrum" led me right to the a...

indeed, it never happened. i suppose i'm to blame, but our ToC's interest in scattegories seemed to wane rapidly pretty much right after i extended that invitation (and teapot accepted). oh well.

i thought it was a great theme. the double-duty theme revealer clue at the end was the pièce de resistance. andy kravis is on a roll.

linda sue park was on jeopardy?? whoa. we have a lot of her books. i knew she was a fan of the show, but didn't realize she had been a contestant. my wife's aunt met her at a bookstore signing event shortly after my run and apparently i was a subject of discussion. there was a guy on in season 28 wh...

Re: Think Different 164: United Nations
this question is problematic on a definitional level... unlike the flood-risk question, which was non-ideal in terms of gameplay. (the lonely planet question is also bad for gameplay, i think. it feels like all of the wrong answers are gotchas.) they are blemishes on an otherwise very engaging TD.

Re: Think Different 164: United Nations
Those looking at South America may not have been as wrong as they thought. Surinam and Guyana are CONCACAF countries, but neither has qualified for a World Cup. good point, although yeah, suriname and guyana would not have been good choices anyway. 1 point - Syria (ancient city of Aleppo, ancient c...

Re: Think Different 164: United Nations
Soccer question ruined me (but then I know next to nothing about futbol, just figured that all soccer playing countries in the Americas would be in that group, woudln't have guessed at all that there was a second league for the Americas as well.) well, tjconn728 did helpfully spell out the acronym ...
