Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

No clue on township and I guessed shantytown. I thought I had no idea on cube and was surprised to see my guess of hexahedron was correct. I still don't know what the game is, but in trying to follow the description of what was listed got lucky as I also considered heptahedron. D&D (and I'm sure ot...

Re: Tuesday, March 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The clue had me figuring it could be the right author going off the year. The problem was I did not know the insect. Not liking any of my choices of cricket, grasshopper and bee, I went with ant for at least being 1950s sci-fi as I recalled Them! . I am greatly amused by the mental image of an ant ...

So, why should I have known "township "?
I guessed ghetto.

I was surprised only 13% knew Lash Larue and I have never seen any of his movies.
I got Lash LaRue because he was cited in a line in Pulp Fiction (The Wolf talking to Vincent), so I looked him up a few years ago. Got me the win.

Re: 2021 Current Events Discussion Thread

The movie is pretty good, too. Here was Juster's opinion on the film, as cribbed from Wikipedia: "It was a film I never liked. I don't think they did a good job on it. It's been around for a long time. It was well reviewed, which also made me angry." It's not like it was an easy book to adapt. I th...

I re-read it a few years as an adult (obviously). It's still great. And the Jules Feiffer illustrations are wonderful. The movie is pretty good, too.

I can't be the only one struck by the irony of a missing S dooming Justin's FJ right after an entire category devoted to words ending with an S.
The missing S didn't doom him; he was going to finish in 3rd even if he got it right. His lapse didn't affect anything.

This was my introduction to trivia contests. I was a proud member of the Suicidal Zippers. (I don't know that 'hardest' is apt, but hey, it's journalism.)

Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

Evidently none of the Master Minds knew the nautical miles question and only one knew Magellan's flagship. They may be Master Minds, but they certainly aren't Eggheads. ;) How many times have you seen one of them give a look like "Oh, yeah, I knew that one, darn it!" after the answer is revealed? J...

Anybody else guess The Eagles? I couldn't think of an optimistic hit, but many weeks on the charts was reasonable.
Yeah, I did. Never in a million years would have thought Journey sold that well.

It sounded like Chauncey worked for NHBB (IAC nowadays), but he works for World Scholar's Cup. I've never heard of that one.

It seem like (don't hold me to this, Sg) that everyone who's been on Jeopardy and said their occupation had something to do with trivia or quizzing has lost.

I'd take Ste. Chapelle over Sacre Coeur.

And I agree; if you've been to Notre Dame, the odds are you've been to the Louvre.

Re: Wednesday, March 3, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

We've already seen two perfectly acceptable hosts who could carry on respectably in Alex Trebek's footsteps. But if the clues don't improve, no host will be able to keep the show at its former level of excellence. Once the powers-that-be settle on a new host, I hope they turn their attention to wha...

Re: Wednesday, March 3, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was rooting for a scoreless tie after Mt. Rainier was a TS. I had no idea my wish would be so close to coming true! Rainier is the highest U.S. peak outside of AK, CA, and CO, and given its proximity to the dense population around Seattle and Tacoma, when (not if) it erupts, it has the potential ...

FJ needed 'until' the 1980s to make sense. Terrible wording. Add another Notre Dame.

Congrats to Melis. I always am impressed by a non-native American winning. Plus a smart wager, not falling for the all-in.

I was sure it was Shinzo Abe, and then switched to Netanyahu after he occurred to me at the last second. Interesting fact: Netanyahu's older brother, Yonatan, led the Israeli raid at Entebbe, and was the only Israeli military fatality in the raid. (And if you're unaware of the Entebbe raid, you owe ...

We are definitely spoiled here in West Michigan. My alcohol closet is stocked with various Founders/New Holland/Bells offerings like Dragon's Milk special editions, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Canadian Breakfast Stout, and Mas Agave. That one is a lime gose that is aged in tequila barrels. It's a bee...
