Themed boards you'd liked/would love to see?

Post by Leaper »

To continue a thread from the Sony boards, I actually like themed boards. I understand why some people don't like them, but if you do them right (and that's always the key, isn't it?), they're great, like the ToC board that brought Cliff Claven's dream categories to life.

I put up my Breakfast Club themed dream board last time at Sony, so here's another:

THE BBC
DOCTOR WHO?
SHERLOCK
TOP GEAR
ARE YOU BEING SERVED?
FAULTY TOWERS

Y'all have any of your own? Want to be all nostalgic over actual ones you liked?

There was one a while back that led with Classic Game Shows, then had categories like "Family Feud," "What's My Line?" and others.

I've written a couple of these boards for events I've held, but this one was my favorite:

CLASSIC GAME SHOWS
FAMILY FEUD
BLOCKBUSTERS 2012
"P"ASSWORD
CARD SHARKS
MIND GAMES (USC's own game show)
アタックチャンス!

How about an Alex themed board?

Chasing Hotel Burlgars
Heart Attack, Heart Attack

Popes:

Peter (Falk, Tork, Cottontail, etc.)
Urban (cities)
Leo (people born under the 5th sign of the zodiac)
Innocent (acquitted folks)
Pie Us (desserts)
John/Paul (Lennon/McCartney songs)

I thought about the first category being "Famous Peters", but J! doesn't work blue.

Edit: my co-worker suggested that rather than going with "P"ius (which I had envisioned as a famous saints category), a category about desserts would be better. Gotta give him credit.

The Heart Attack, Heart Attack category reminds me of the first song in Planet 51: Lollipop, Lollipop. You could do: Heart attack, heart attack, oh, hearty hearty hearty...

I've always wanted to see a board themed after Alex's non sequiturs on the last High Rollers. Stuff like "Many 'Moon' Come, a Niner", "Seven-ahhh!", "Stayin' Alive with the Bee Gees", etc.

I wanted to do an 'Oooooh, Sorry' category. Maybe questions about how to say sorry in different languages.
Is his wife much younger? We could have an Older Men/Younger Women category!

They actually did this one! And except for a "setup" category (The Popes) and replacing Pie Us with "Line" Us, you pretty much got it! (Though the content was somewhat different.)

One of many games where they propogate the myth that Ford introduced the automobile assembly line in 1913. While Ford did start using it in 1913, Olds had been using it since 1901.

Here's one that's been bouncing around my head for a while (but have yet to write):

THIS IS THE POLICE (maybe about the band, but could also be about police history)
WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED (we give you the bordering countries, you give the country)
COME OUT (I can think of a couple of possibilities, but maybe about movie premieres)
WITH YOUR "HAND"S UP ("hand" is in quotes - you know what that means)
YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE (posthumous book releases? I can't really think of a good one here)
COPPER (all about the element)
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

The first game I wrote for the old Sony boards ran as follows:

WISH YOU WERE HERE ("postcards" from various destinations as the clues)
MONEY
LEARNING TO FLY (early aviation)
DARK SIDE OF THE "MOON"
PINK
FLOYD (including Floyd of Rosedale and Floyd R. Turbo, American, of course!)
Life IS pain, Princess. Anyone telling you differently is selling something.

Well, I think everyone knows what themed board *I*'d like to see:

THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER (flags with several stars on them)
LA MARSEILLAISE (clues about Marseille)
GOD SAVE THE KING
DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES* (things Germany is #1 in - exports, sporting matches where they came out on top, etc.)
A SOLDIER'S SONG (war songs)
"O" CANADA

*yes, I know that's no longer the name of Germany's national anthem, but you know how hard it is to think of national anthem titles that people might be mildly familiar with, and that lend themselves to write clues about?

That latter one would never get on, but the other one would. Maybe a board built around Alex's mannerisms and go-to expressions?

ROBBIE BURNS
CORRECTAMENTE - Saying the word "correctly" in different languages. Alex gives word, they give language.
NO HARM, NO FOUL - conflicts where all sides got hurt equally badly?
OOOOOH, SORRY - Famous losses (I used your different languages idea already)
"IN" QUOTATION MARKS - Famous quotes beginning with "in"
AND WE KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS - Give the word being defined

Hmm. It doesn't seem as though the board would have enough variety.

Here's mine:

GOLDEN ROAD (the precious metal)

TRIPLE PLAY (must give playwright)

CLIFF HANGERS (TV shows with cliffhanger episodes)

IT'S IN THE "BAG" (can appear anywhere in the word)

ONE AWAY (second-place sports finishes)

...& 5 OTHER GAMES PLAYED ON THE PRICE IS RIGHT (rules to the game are described)

^What's "Robbie Burns" got to do with anything? I've never heard Trebek say that one.

Just recently that's been a correct response. Alex always does a quasi-Scots accent when he says it.

You're right. Most of the time (like tonight) it's "R-r-r-r-obbie Burns".

Yep. Whenever Burns is the right response, I yell at the contestants to PLEASE say "Who is Robbie Burns" because then Alex WON'T. They never listen. They always say "Who is Burns" or at most "Who is Robert Burns".

And Alex always says "R-r-robbie Burns!" Drives me nuts.

I think I buried that one in my subconscious, because as I reviewed the board you linked to, I remembered being delighted at it when it first aired!

If "Robbie Burns" is too obscure, we could always have Alex do another of his impressions:

I NEVER DRINK...WINE (people who have played Dracula on film or television)
Life IS pain, Princess. Anyone telling you differently is selling something.
