19th Century Inventions
Thoreau noted in 1854, it "resounds at every post. It is a harp with one string--the first strain from the American lyre."

What is the telegraph? Theresa said telegram; Alistair said cotton gin.

Great job Alistair. You might be in the Tournament of Champions now.

I was not home for the first round but I got 10 right in DJ and missed FJ.

Actually had a decent run today: 19/30 and 11/28.

I got only eggnog in the Spirits category, only Creed in Mass (I still think the Catholics are way, way, way, WAY too ritualistic), and total 0/5 in New Jersey.

My mall knowledge helped me yet again with Wenatchee = Washington. On the other hand, I was totally lost on the first three, and felt Wyoming was way too easy at $1600.

What is a teleg… nah, can't be that obvious. Gonna be something totally obscure. Leaving it blank.

Humorously, I photographed Merion and Villanova stations on December 1. Talk about the way things come around. :)

Congrats to the new champ. You gave it a good run Alistair. :(

The wording led me to think of musical instruments. Best I could come up with was banjo. Never seen a one string banjo, but its the best I could do. Then just as the last note played, telegraph suddenly came to me. Bleah.

Unfortunately I don't think his total winnings are high enough for a three-day champ...still a good run though! Congrats Alistair!

You are way too young, then. I remember when all of the cool kids (male and female) were wearing them in the early 1990s...

Not one, but two glaring errors of fact in clues today. Yuck!

I was most impressed with 3IBA's run, including the wager in FJ! Sorry you couldn't have taken it further.

The Jeopardy clue writers are just plain wrong regarding the response they required for the $400 Double Jeopardy clue in the Mass category: "Mass is one of the Catholic Church's 7 of these." Alistair responded "What are Sacraments", Alex accepted the response and moved routinely on to the next clue. There are, indeed, 7 Catholic sacraments but the Mass is not one of them. The 7 sacraments are: Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation (Penance), Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick.

Alistair, sorry to see you go... you had a heck of a run. Hope you get to be in the TOC. And, alas, I wasn't able to use my next British victory reference: Roarke's Drift.

Thought the math fun category was an oxymoron. Did well on the Ms. Hippie category, and some of the other state categories.

Had a funny, funny thought about Susan, during the interview. She mentioned the trip assistance work she did and mentioned Namibia. During my Green Room briefings, Maggie made it a point to tell us contestants to be very specific in our pronounciations and told of a contestant who mangled saying Namibia, and thereby losing.

FB was a five-minute get for me, after reading it in the NYT. I focused on post, single string... and then it came to me.

Congrats to Susan. You did very well against Alistair.

Alistair is currently in 15th place in the 2011-13 ToC standings, so unless several contestants ahead him die or are incarcerated or otherwise incapacitated, he will not compete in the ToC. He can take pride in what he accomplished.

INteresting wagering with AListair and third placer THeresa both wagering zero, and Susan wagering $5K. Scores were THeresa $6000, Alistair $15600, Susan $17800.

Congrats to Alistair on a very nice run, and congrats to Susan on a solid win. Bet she's kicking herself over being outbuzzed on the Main Line clue. ;)

FJ was a lucky insta-guess for me today...

Alistair's 15th place does not include the college and teachers' champs, who are not included in the rankings because they are automatically in. So he's really 18th, which means he's out. Good player, enjoyed his run.

I was negative 147% confident in that answer. 0 is more than negative 147.
