Rough day. Only 13 right with just 2 right in DJ and I blanked on FJ, just throwing at Hawthorne at the last minute.

I cannot understand why Nichole didn't just bet $0. There's a 50/50 chance of getting FJ wrong so if there is a lock tie, go with the safe bet.

Not sure what Nichole was thinking on that FJ bet. Has anyone ever done that in a lock-tie before? And when was the last time we had three people in one week not be around for FJ?

Basically, all Nichole had to do was bet $0 because it was a lock tie but she got FJ wrong and a result, there is a new champion. Never seen anything like that before and quite honestly I have no idea why she did such a thing.

As a result, she lost.

We don't even need the Betting Police for this one... it's not even worth it. Wow.

Simple -- she wasn't. Way to throw $17,200+ out the window.
Has anyone ever done that in a lock-tie before?
It's very rare and usually comes from the 2nd place person, who for reasons unknown, holds $1 back.

Good riddance. Anybody who has the lock-tie pretty much pointed out to them and proceeds to give up their guaranteed win deserves to lose.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

WTF!??! When is the last time THAT happened (if ever)? I was explaining to my friend how there was no way they could mess up the wagering, after Alex spelled out the lock-tie for them, and then....holy crap.

"The category is...American Authors"
Hmm, I need a precall...screw it, who is Mark Twain?
25 seconds later, after not recognizing the quote
Can't think of anything better...screw it, who is Mark Twain?

I'll take it

in such a case, if you're going to bet, bet it all. either way it's max or consolation prize.

First round was a breeze for me and hit a wall right before stars. ha

The worst part is the she bet $5000, as opposed to $6000, or really any non-zero number. Goodness, bet everything if you're going to do that.

No the worst part is that Alex even noted that the other lady's score was half of the champ's.

Actually, no, the worst part is that she bet anything at all. At least this frees up a spot for Monday's episode for a contestant who almost has to have more sense.

As for the actual question, I played with Melville for quite a bit, but halfway through got the sense that "water" wasn't as important as finding a writer who was both famous and popular from around then. So I switched to Twain. Melville FWIW died in 1891, so he *could* have said it.

Thoreau was long since dead, but I wouldn't expect to the champ to have considered that.

Why, oh why do they bother taking the test and going through the audition process and playing for the first 28 minutes, if they are just going to throw away a guaranteed win?

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Thanks Heels!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I'll try to have the link in the first post of that thread by about 9pm eastern.

Who b0rked the forum earlier? I couldn't get on until just now.

Heigl was my only get in Actors/Roles. My mom, sister, and I are all fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, but they thought the movie was awful. (Can't say I didn't warn them — I told them several times that it had like 2% on Rotten Tomatoes.)

Police car was my only miss in Trans"po"tation, since I was thinking of the black and white checkers on a taxicab, and was furiously trying to turn taxicab into something with "po" in it.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really get anything out of self-help and motivation.

What Degree? was a total "who cares?" category to me. I saw no way to figure any of them out.

Got only 3 right in DJ! Two of them (pegasus and variable) weren't too surprising, but where the hell did my mind pull foxglove out of? That one character on Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers?

Twain came to mind first. But I felt the quote didn't sound Twainish, so I left a blank.

At least Paula went all-in. The result would have been even more wacky had Paula held back and managed to win anyway. I also have to give her credit for being quite a savant with that Betelgeuse DD, with clues still left, predicting what she would need for that lock-tie.

I think the reaction to Nichole's wager must have overloaded the board for a few minutes too ...
