The Grammys
Of the more than 75 competitive categories, this one does not cite the title of any album, song, or other project.

No 20 second preview of the regular games this week on the Sony J! website as that preview is of the Teen tournament starting on Wednesday.

Down by $2,000 with one $2,000 clue left and the clue is answering for "Southern African country". If there is ever a time to just take a wild guess, this is it.

Very gutsy and interesting wager by the champ. In his spot, I might have banked on second betting the most she could and stay ahead of third and bet just enough to cover that, because that FJ category is far from my favorite.

I started with Spoken Word, then thought they had to be speaking something and took a guess with what turned out to be correct. See what happens when just you put down something with no hope whatsoever of being right? Oh, who an I kidding? Nobody who needs this advice will listen.

Yeah, definitely a ballsy bet, but hey, it paid off.

I had no clue what the clue was going for and "Best New Artist" just popped into my head. It seemed to fit, so I went with it.

For some reason the wording of FJ didn't sit well with me, but the answer occurred to me almost immediately, so I can't really complain.

Weird game. I hit some bumps in the J round even though I suspect that it played easy for most. I didn't have much trouble in the DJ at all even though the players seemed to flag a bit at the end. I agree - down $2000, just toss up a shot and see if it goes in.

The FJ clue confused me and I went with Lifetime Achievement before realizing it wasn't a "competitive" category.

OK, can't be spoken word, Lifetime Achievement isn't competitive, can't be any of the technical categories (best engineering/arrangement/recording of what?)...New Artist! Perfect!

I never would've made that wager -- it's easier to assume every 2nd place player is suicidal -- but hey, it worked. Shore's for the win, baby.

I think my reaction to FJ was quite similar to some of yours.

I really didn't love the phrasing of the clue (I found it awkward, confusing, and maybe even a little imprecise) but I ended up getting it right.

I seem to be getting a little better at answering some FJs by not "overthinking" -- I just tried to think of some Grammy categories that seemed kind of "non-concrete" or "non-specific". (Something like "Best Gospel Song" or "Best Rap Song" is for a *specific* project, so let's try to think of something that's "just for being you", as it were.)

Almost an instaget FJ; "Best new artist" is one of the most popular categories so it just took some thought.

Good bet by the champ, I'm guessing he thought he didn't have any real chance at getting FJ.

So, the only thing Josh needs to do to get into the ToC is lose tomorrow. I wonder if he knew that when he taped?

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

If he wins tomorrow, he'll be a five time champ, which guarantees him a spot. I'll bet Dan McShane was rooting for him tomorrow.

It guarantees him a spot in the next ToC. Not in this one.

Count me in with the folks who thought FJ was worded terribly, but managed to get the correct response anyway. I knew "Best New Artist" was a category, and it seemed to fit the clue as not referencing any of those things, so I figured that had to be what they were going for.

Right, which is why Dan would want Josh to win again.

This was the shortest span (eight episodes) between games where two contestants had at least $20,000 before Final since June 3 & 11, 2008.

Although this was a Shore's Conjecture game, Joshua's bet was not Shoretegic, as it would not have kept him ahead of second place on a double get had second bet to keep third locked out.

So if he loses tomorrow he's in this TOC. If he wins tomorrow he's in the next TOC.

Sounds like a pretty good situation to be in ...

The FJ wording confused me as well, and I really overthought it. I don't think Best New Artist even crossed my mind - I was trying to come up with some kind of technical category, then ended up with Spoken Word.

With four wins & $69,611, Joshua moves into eleventh place in the 2011-13 ToC standings . . . or does he?

Let me join the chorus in saying this was a head-scratching clue.

I went with two of the three contestants by saying "Spoken Word," while knowing in my gut it was wrong.

The missus saw the clue in today's NYT and said, "Oh. Best New Artist."

So that was an Instaget... for her.
