Re: Monday, February 4, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I liked Tori's strategy of starting with the middle clue and woking her way down, going back to pick up the "chump change" when she's subsequently built up a lead (I was hoping to use the same strategy myself someday), but the non-MSB FJ bet of hers leaves me somewhat puzzled. But, since she's in the Teen Tournament, and it probably didn't cost her a wildcard spot, I'll leave it at that.
Final was very gettable, from two approaches: either think of the home state of each gentleman on the mountain, or, if you don't know who all is on the mountain, or what state their from, can't go wrong with guessing the state that gave us the most presidents. (I'm sure someone will pick the third way, that is not being able to think of each home state, so leaving the answer blank because there was no other way to solve it.

Anyone following the Reretaken Down thread I'm sure laughed (and had a nice visual image) upon seeing the category for FJ!

My mind must be starting to go, along with my hearing: I could've sworn she left out the 'I' ins NCIS:LA, and while I did get the answer they were looking for, I'm still not sure why "cool" was wrong. Not that any of it mattered in the end.
Instaget FJ. My only problem with her wager was that she bet anything at all.

Never heard of a proctor before. Or any meaning of "blackjack" besides the card game. Or that Faulkner book. Or a game called Diplomacy.
Funny how the two Fictional Females I missed were both video game related.
Orphan Annie should've been at $200. Or maybe $1.98.
====
What was the TOM for Mozart on From the Top for $1200? It seemed like it could've been anyone. That whole category seemed rather tough; Harp was my only get.
Big Bang Theory was my only get in LA TV.
Total brain lock. Who's on Rushmore? Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt… argh, can't think of the other two. And I have no idea where Teddy was from. I got nothing.

I try not to complain about the difficulty of the clues during Teen/College tournaments, but I swear the writers treat these kids like they're morons. As if the ****ing picture wasn't enough, they spot them the 'Little Orphan' too?!?TenPoundHammer wrote:Orphan Annie should've been at $200. Or maybe $1.98.

5/5 here, I'm just not sure what any of it had to do with the NPR show. I know what Alex said when he revealed the category, but they could at least try to tie the clues in.That whole category seemed rather tough; Harp was my only get.

Instaget final: VA has the most Presidents.
In case you wondered: GW and TJ from VA, Abe from ILL, TR from NY.
EDIT: Oh, and Leonard's afro is badass

Her small FJ bet was fine. Leonard might have tried to beat her by a buck and with the wild card she was in good shape no matter what. It was an FJ category where I'd suggest betting it all. I mean, how much can you ask about Mt. Rushmore. It took me a second to figure out what they were answering, but it was an instaget after that.
I thought it was appropriate Leonard Cooper got The Big Bang Theory clue.
I had never heard of that Faulkner book, but Southern writer made it a good guess.

She did. And I said "sweet" but I too think "cool" is acceptable.xxaaaxx wrote:My mind must be starting to go, along with my hearing: I could've sworn she left out the 'I' ins NCIS:LA, and while I did get the answer they were looking for, I'm still not sure why "cool" was wrong. Yes, as soon as I saw his name, I thought of the show and hoped a BBT clue would come up.Bamaman wrote:I thought it was appropriate Leonard Cooper got The Big Bang Theory clue.
Is sucrose (or was it saccharine? Or something else?) cool when heated? That seems to be the crux right there.thejeopardyfan wrote:She did. I don't remember her, but I wonder if Tori was on one of the teams I read for in the Bowl. Nice shout out for Madden and his great work!
And yeah, Rushmore was pretty funny. Nowadays the easiest way to remember who is on Mt. Rushmore is the Nationals' racing presidents.

Re: Monday, February 4, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I think the clue alluded to it losing its sweetness when heated (although I could be wrong). My guess would be that anything would lose its 'cool'ness when heated, so that might make it right.dhkendall wrote:Is sucrose (or was it saccharine? Or something else?) cool when heated? FTR, I think cool wouldn't be acceptable, but maybe it is because every female that signed my yearbook used the phrase "stay sweet".

And I was even working that out on the precall: "Okay, who's on Rushmore: Lincoln, Roosevelt… … … … … … … … … … damn it."dhkendall wrote:dhkendall wrote:(I'm sure someone will pick the third way, that is not being able to think of each home state, so leaving the answer blank because there was no other way to solve it.)

I was shocked to see that Tori wagered as little as she did, but then again, I'm in the habit of "wager everything" in second and third and "cover second" in first.
3/5 in games. Got my categories mixed up and thought we were in Rhyme Time instead of Games, which is why Diplomacy didn't come to mind.
