OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. If our champion, Drew Horwood, were analyzing his own business, he would come to the conclusion, "Hey, it's going pretty well. I've won a lot of money in just two days." Lloyd and Jennifer, welcome aboard. Nice to have you with us. Good luck to all three of you as we put you to work right now in the Jeopardy! Round. CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: As you heard in the introduction, Jennifer Head works for the Sisters of Charity. You're an archivist, right?

Jennifer: I'm an archivist, yes.

Alex: Which means you do what?

Jennifer: I get to play around with old documents. I get to organize them. I get to make sure they're preserved. And they were very kind to me. I got the call about Jeopardy! two weeks before I started. And when I called up my supervisor, Sister Regina, and said, "Can I take some time off?" When she heard what it was for, she let me do it, so I appreciate that.

Alex: Sister Regina, Jeopardy! thanks you.

[Laughter]

Alex: Lloyd Baum, an insurance specialist from Long Beach, New York. I would say that Lloyd is a very romantic fellow, ladies and gentlemen. Tell us about the selection of your wedding ring for your bride.

Lloyd: Well, we were sitting at a table. My father-in-law was a jewelry manufacturer, and he had brought over two envelopes full of samples. So we just spread them out on the table, and we're looking and looking and trying to decide. And my collie came over and stuck his paw on the table and picked one out, and that's the one we used.

[Laughter]

Alex: Of course. Mr. Romance.

Alex: Drew Horwood is our champ. He's from Minnesota and a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. Does that mean you have traveled to England and visited Baker Street and all of the things like that?

Drew: I would love to. I haven't been able to yet. Hopefully, I can. What I did do was write my college senior paper on Sherlock Holmes and British masculinity.

Alex: Oh, really?

Drew: I did. Yes.

Alex: And what's the connection between the two, exactly?

Drew: More than you'd think. I was arguing that Doyle was using Holmes as a way to expand his vision of masculinity to everyone that read it.

Alex: Yeah. Okay, good.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SINGERS PORTRAYED ON FILM $1000: In "Nowhere Boy" Aaron Johnson played him as a teenaged lad

THE 18th CENTURY $800: From 1701 to 1714 much of Europe was drawn into the war of this "succession"

OYSTER STEW $400: The Puget Sound area is famous for these small oysters that rarely exceed 1 1/2 inches
(Jennifer: What are button oysters?)

OYSTER STEW $800: As its name indicates, this bird is a natural enemy of the oyster
(Alex: Go for the obvious. It's an [*].)

MARYLAND $1000: To watch the Redskins play, head to this county named for Queen Anne's husband
(What is Prince William County?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Lloyd: $7,800
Drew: $2,400
Jennifer: $1,800

Jennifer: You ought to try wagering between $3,001 and $5,800. This will top a $0 wager by Drew while still beating Lloyd and Drew on the Triple Stumper (should Lloyd wager to cover Drew's doubled score and Drew wager to cover your doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE

Almost fell out of my chair when Drew made it a true DD. Although it's odd that he's willing to do that on a bottom row clue while wimping out on a 2nd row clue. But he did what he had to do so kudos.

No real surprise that Jennifer put no thought into her late DD wager.

Found myself rooting for Lloyd because he was dominating the much younger others on the signaling device. As a general rule I like to see a contestant spank those a generation or more their junior.

Interesting FJ clue, not overly difficult especially if you know the former name of Belize.

The Western Hemisphere
One of the 2 Central American countries never under military rule in the last 50 years.

Spoiler
What is Belize or Costa Rica? Jennifer and Drew both said Costa Rica; Lloyd said Honduras.

Lloyd Baum: $15,400-$14,201=$1,199
Drew Horwood: $14,800+$13,000=$27,800...now a 3-day champion with $63,999
Jennifer Head: $11,800+$5,000=$16,800

I was also surprised to see Drew make it a true DD, but you have to consider that point in the game. I don't think any of his other wagers came at such a dramatic moment - he basically needed to double his score right then to have any chance of winning. And sure enough, it worked out.

I wrote down Belize; Costa Rica was my other thought, so good to see I would have been right either way, though Belize seemed like the safer bet considering it's only been independent of Britain for about 30 of those 50 years.

Another $6800 on Lach trash today. Being on the show with actual money at stake probably makes you a lot more hesitant on some of those borderline clues, of course.

I decided to actually write out FJ today on paper. I wrote down Honduras and was about to write Belize (had already written down a symbol for and ) when I noticed they were only answering for one of the two, so I stopped. Too bad Belize didn't come to me first.

I was also rooting for Lloyd.

I was sort of rooting against Drew, not out of any malice, but because his annoyingly small DD wagers were not something I wanted to see in the TOC, something he may only be two more games away from now. After he actually went for it on that one today, I wasn't as bothered to see him keep going since he seems perfectly nice otherwise. I did have to wonder: he's ALWAYS wanted to say, "Make it a true Daily Double?" Someone who wagered that conservatively?

I used to live in Belize, so this was a nice wheelhouse clue (didn't take more than a few second to get to Costa Rica after that). I wasn't the biggest fan of the Belizean government, but obviously it could be worse...

If I'm not mistaken, Costa Rica doesn't have an army.

Didn't know this for sure (apparently Central American history is something of a weak spot), but I couldn't think of anything involving Costa Rica and the military. Good enough!

That was basically my thought, too. "Hmmm, Honduras, no; Panama, no; Nicaragua, no, El Salvador, no; Costa Rica .... ummmm .... OK." Thankfully it didn't ask for both, as Belize wasn't coming to me.

"Always wanted to day this!" Am I misremembering? Is he not the one who found it on the 2nd clue yesterday? He could've said it then.

I got Belize on the FJ from a bit David Letterman did a few years ago when they were trying to decide which country we should invade solely for the purpose of conquering great vacation locales. Belize won hands down as they spoke English already, and didn't have much of a military.

He was. And I believe he did double his score at the time, though it would have sounded pretty lame to "make it a true Daily Double" for all of 200 dollars. Alex even teased him for risking such a small amount.

I rationalized it figuring that since they were a British colony until 1981 and still a member of the Commonwealth, the likelihood of military rule was pretty low. In hindsight, Costa Rica is pretty famous for not having an army since the late 40s, so that was probably the more obvious answer, as reflected by the fact that no one on the show actually put down Belize.

First thought of Belize, then realized Costa Rica was a safer answer. Pleasantly surprised by Alex's comments before the reveal.

I got Costa Rica immediately, not sure I would have come up with Belize only because it is off my radar screen of CA countries.

I was rooting for Lloyd too, sorry to see him lose.

I was trying to come up with the other one and actually eliminated Costa Rica because of Jurassic Park. For some reason I remember the military was in power at the end of the book when they were trying to figure out who was "in charge" on Isla Nebular and nobody wanted to fess up.

I had pretty much the same thought process! I gave myself credit for the twofer. :-) Glad to see Drew getting a little less timid with the wagers, he's also growing on me a bit. I was mostly rooting for Jennifer (the ALA code of conduct requires me to back a librarian/archivist when they appear on Jeopardy), was a little sad about her wagering though.
