Looking at tonight's FJ in the NY Times and I have to say that it's poorly worded.

Re: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Gotta take issue with "Canadian Provincial Newspapers" $1200 (or whatever the category name and amount was): The Winnipeg Sun is *not* a newspaper. If you want to be charitable, it's a tabloid (not only charitable, but technically correct, as it's tabloid size (not a broadsheet), usually has a nothing but a large picture with a short headline in Armageddon-size font that's a "witty" pun or rhyme on the cover, and has a young lady in a swimsuit near the front of the paper), if you want to be honest, it's a mouthpiece for the Conservatives/Progressive Conservatives (what the conservative party in Manitoba is known as). Think "Fox News meets British tabloid". Hell, it isn't even our newspaper of record! [sony]I am outrage, OUTRAGED! that they'd give that rag any more credit beyond the birdcage liner status it deserves.[/sony]

Of course they left the TV category for last with the slowpoke around. Of course
FJ: "Well, f---, there goes the streak...would really help if I had any idea who Mercer was. OK, old song, hit, body of water...screw it, Moon River. Worth a shot". *shrug* I'll take it.

Re: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I think I got food poisoning yesterday. Strangely, it didn't affect my performance too much.
====
"[Larry] was on cruise control." In yesterday's DJ!, he was more like "puttering along on the side of the road at 5 MPH with three flat tires."
Got only A Christmas Carol in Books in German. I took two years of college German, but the only recognizable word in the whole category was "Weihnachts".
Got the bottom two in Wouldn't Last. Eddie Murphy wasn't registering, and wasn't sure of which Kardashian to pick. Pamela Anderson was right on the tip of my tongue. "Oh, um…she's known for her rack, she was in Stacked and Stripperella crapwhatwashername." I think it might be time to turn in my man card.
I also fell for Foucault upon seeing Pendulum. If there is a way to be misled a clue, I'll be misled. If there is no way to be misled, I'll still find one.
====
My only gets in all of DJ! were the middle three in Newspapers. I saw no way to get from "Stratford, Globe & Mail" to Ontario, annd $2000 was legitimately difficult.
For once, the "when in doubt, say University of [state]" strategy backfires (Colleges for $800).
Citronella was another one that wasn't coming to me in time.

I have no idea how "Moon River" came so fast, but it did.

"Who is Fouc----oh, wait, Italian? Err...Ga...li...leo?"
Couldn't remember which one was in Tempe (mind was working kinda slow today), so I clammed and hoped for the rebound. Also decided to let someone else take the OxCam plunge, which worked out nicely too.

Can't believe the older guy missed FJ. He needs to dye his hair dark if he plans on missing any more of those gimmes from those decades! He hasn't earned that gray hair...

Not all people of Larry's generation remember for even followed pop music from when they were a kid(not sure how old he was 50 years ago). A college professor who would have been in his 20s in the 60s admitted not to following the Beatles.BaltimoreBoy wrote:Can't believe the older guy missed FJ. I wonder if the challenger got of a glimpse of dhkendall's icon/info for that newspaper clue.

Re: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I have to say that I'm a big fan of the prolific Johnny Mercer, and I've never heard that anyone re-named a river in his honor. There's an absolutely wonderful recording of Mercer performing at the 92nd Street Y in NYC late in his life. He performs some of his well known songs and tells some great stories. He had written the lyrics to "Moon River" for the film "Breakfast At Tiffany's" (music by Henry Mancini) and at one of the initial screenings in Hollywood the film was very well received. On the way out of the theater one of the producers was heard to say to the others "Great movie. You guys do what you want but as far as I'm concerned that damned song can go!"
Mercer had a great laugh about that since "Moon River" went on to win the Academy Award and gave Mercer a (much needed) bump to his career.

I had no idea who Mercer was and went with Foster's song just to have something.
I got Inverness/Nova Scotia, but I have no idea how.
I thought the TV show would be related to religious people on TV, either televangelists or fictional characters like Father Mulcahy, but based on the one we saw, I guess not.

Re: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Enjoyed most of tonight's game but boy, screeched and halted on the Books in German. Blanked on all of them.
Swept the history category, did pretty well on the provincial newspaper as well, being a Canadaphile.
Blanked on FJ. For some reason, thought early Sixties rock (not remembering Mr Mercer) and was trying to think of a river, like that song where something gets tossed off the Tallahatchee (sp) Bridge.
Boy, Larry sure is.... deliberate, isn't he.

Ditto here. And as to the guy who had his head cut off, my first thought was Charles I, and when that was wrong, thought, Sir Thomas More? Nope... as the missus said, "The other guy."TenPoundHammer wrote:

Missed everything prior to the last clue before the first commercial break. We had to make sure our dog had food to eat.
I'm not going to score FJ! as a get for me for today in the weekly polls. I didn't know who Johnny Mercer was, and even though my dad got it right, he sounded a bit unsure about his answer, so I think it's fair to call today a clam.

Inverness Caledonia Thistle, of the Scottish Premier League play in the above stadium which I consider the most beautiful setting for a stadium. So I got from Inverness to Scotland to Nova Scotia.

Haha- my thoughts exactly. Soon as I saw it, I was thinking it was too bad his MSB was so low.BaltimoreBoy wrote:Can't believe the older guy missed FJ. He needs to dye his hair dark if he plans on missing any more of those gimmes from those decades! He hasn't earned that gray hair
Same way I did, maybe? (Inverness? That's Scotland. Oh! Scotland! New Scotland! Nova Scotia!) Swept the category, in fact.Bamaman wrote:I got Inverness/Nova Scotia, but I have no idea how.
On that question where the answer was the Pythagorean theory, I almost said "Who is the Tin Woodsman?"
