Hmmm, does that mean you didn't get the FJ?

Since I was as clueless as you and the other two were as to that guy's identity, I was reduced to "Guessing some actor I think might have died that year". I went with Jimmy Stewart and my eight game winning streak crashes and burns.

I thought that FJ should have been called for unnecessary roughness.

The next day:

In my memory Alex's comments before the reveals were in the clue, I feel better now realizing I had absolutely no shot. My $7 bet was in honor of John Elway.

Memorizing major Oscars certainly simplifies seemingly impossible clues like this one and 1962 was a very good year. Since the category implies a male you can eliminate both Miracle Worker wins leaving Lawrence of Arabia and To Kill a Mockingbird. Peck seemed a much better answer than various choices from Lawrence. Personally, that's all I know about 1962 movies, so perhaps ignorance is bliss. But Jeopardy very rarely throws a movie clue like this up there without Oscar implications.

As an aside, where do people rank Oscars in essential Jeopardy knowledge? I guess I'd go with somewhere in the middle.

A good aggressive move wagering everything on the early DD in a seemingly comfortable category.

Ran "Im".

Surprised at only 2/5 in Children's Books. NHO the book at $600, forgot all about Very Hungry Caterpillar even though it was a childhood favorite, and Velveteen Rabbit didn't register. Come on, give me a Wainscott Weasel clue already. :P

Anyone else clam on "quintessential" because "essence" was in the clue?

I also fell for "romance language".

I couldn't hear a typewriter in that Anderson clue for $800.

"Who is Yes?" "Yes." I lol'd.

There was a film version of To Kill a Mockingbird?!?!

I knew Brock Peters was Tom Robinson (as well as Benjamin Sisko's dad) so there this FJ didn't take much thought. I wonder if anyone got it who didn't know who Peters was.

I was sorta hoping Mike would lose because he rather foolishly went to the top of the board with time dwindling. He needed a couple of $2000 gets to put the game out of reach. Also, when players do not opt for the $2000 questions, I am unhappy.

My streak of correct FJs ends at eight.

I didn't recognize the name Brock Peters, so I just guessed an actor who died in 2003. I said "Katharine Hepburn", thinking that the word "actor" is often used in a gender-neutral way nowadays. My second choice was Bob Hope.

Hindsight is always 20-20, and after reading comments here, I realize I probably should have attached more importance to the year 1962. Don't know if that would have helped me, but it might have.

I knew Brock Peters first as the voice of Darth Vader in the radio version of Star Wars. Later on I saw him in To Kill a Mockingbird.

The only 1962 film I could think of in 30 seconds was Lawrence of Arabia, and I can't think of any American actors who were in it and would be the subject of a regular FJ!

With four wins & $102,800, Mike remains in fourth place in the 2013-14 ToC standings.

Jpsultan, if this were Facebook, I would like your picture above.

::raises hand:: Complete guess based on timeframes. Once I decided on Peck, I spent the last twenty seconds trying to guess who Peters played in Mockingbird.

Really? I think there have been plenty of movie FJs that aren't really Oscar-relevant. And even if Oscar is specified, matching year to acting winners is a trivia step that J! usually doesn't go for.

In any event, I had no idea who Brock Peters was and 1962/2003 didn't mean anything to me. So that left me thinking of buddy pics, and ending up with Jack Lemmon. Couldn't they have at least said "Tom Robinson" or "defendant"?

This was my thought process also, leading me to Bob Hope. I didn't remember who Brock Peters was (AP saying he's Sisko's dad reminded me that I did know that name after all) so I thought he might have been in all the "Road to..." films. I realize now that was Bing Crosby.

I'd rank Oscars north of the middle for a J! study list. It's a relatively easy field to get some broad coverage on. Just memorize the best picture, director, actor, actress.

Couldn't place Brock Peters. I thought hmm sounds like a B movie cowboy. So i guessed Reagan. I knew he died around that time. I didn't think it was correct.

Like a few others, I took a shot with Peck because I knew he died around that time. My only other thought was Brando who, as it turns out, died in mid-2004.
