I didn't care for this set of FJ clues, but they were pretty easy. I was never going to get to Hawking from Tuesday's clue, though.

The extras were all very good clues and I have no excuse for being shut out by them.

Utterly missed the point on Tuesday. Wed, I thought "I know it ends with a -thon!" Even without the l, I might have gotten it if I remembered the right prefix, but was drawing a blank. On Friday, I had trouble choosing Thoreau or Emerson - "looking for an honest man" is all Diogenes means to me - but luckily came down on the right side.
I'm counting Captain as an acceptable spelling mistake on the Singing in the Rain precedent...Or even pentathalon, come to think of it!

As someone else said, I tried to remember the recent Brad Pitt movie on Jesse James, but couldn't come up with it fast enough. 1956 is practically pavlovian for Hungary to me.

The only thing I knew about Diogenes was the lantern thing. That didn't help. So I focused on Yankee and that got me Twain.

No clue on Little Sheba.

Unfortunately for the James clue, I got "Robert Redford" stuck in my head. I knew he wasn't quite old enough, knew the correct answer was something like that, but couldn't get away from it.

Prince's birthday was yesterday (in my time zone, still) (as was mine).




Quinquertium was yet another "Dad is correct out loud too soon" moment. I was busy trying to apply numbers to Olympic events (a distance of fifty somethings? or what?), and am confident I would have gotten there in the course of the three quarters of the Think music remaining.

Friday saw me coming up with Thoreau based on the New England connection Concord offered me (I didn't even have to have the right state!). Diogenes helped somehow, but not in the way Alex described in pre-reveal comments. And I never solidly said Thoreau, but he was the first to come to mind and I never solidly switched away. I think I'd have written down Thoreau and stuck with him.

So this doesn't completely feel like a 5/5 week, but it's close enough for my taste.

Friday's was almost a miss. I originally went with Hawthorne (figuring the New England references), but the Double Diogenes references nagged at me. At the 22d second, Walden and Thoreau kicked in.

The only thing I remember about Come Back Little Sheba was that Shirley Booth (Hazel) was in the movie version.
I always remember Robert Ford thanks to Elton John.
And the "Hungary" response I remember thanks to Chess the Musical's "Nobody's Side". ("1956, Budapest is rising / 1956, Budapest is fighting / 1956, Budapest is falling / 1956, Budapest is dying")
