CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: 11-year-old John Wilkins is a Shakespeare lover, and in the last two years, you have appeared in how many of Shakespeare's plays?

John!!!: Well, at my school, we have a Shakespeare club after school, and I've done it since fourth grade. So, um... I'm appearing in Hamlet for now.

Alex: All right. Do you have the lead?

John!!!: Yes.

Alex: You do? You play Prince Hamlet?

John!!!: I do. It's a very abbreviated version--

Alex: [Overlapping] --I was gonna say, that's a long--

John!!!: [Overlapping] --so I only have 32 lines--

Alex: --oh, well--

John!!!: --which is still a lot. [Overlapping] Hamlet has like a thousand.

Alex: [Overlapping] Yeah, well--’cause Hamlet is one of the longer roles.

John!!!: Yeah, so, I've done--this is my seventh.

Alex: Okay. Good for you.

John!!!: So, yeah. It's really fun, yeah.

Alex: Acting might be in your future.

John!!!: Maybe.

Alex: Sallie Rawlston from Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. She is our youngest competitor. She's only 10 years old and is a park ranger in eight national parks.

Sallie: Yes, sir.

Alex: How do you get to be a ranger?

Sallie: Well, when you go to specific national parks, there's usually a sign-up in the visitors' center that says, "Become a junior ranger today." And then you go and pick up your booklet, and you go around the park and do the certain activities for your age group and then turn it in at the visitors' center at the end of the day and get your junior ranger badge.

Alex: Sounds like fun. Is it?

Sallie: Yes. It's really fun.

Alex: Well, keep going. I hope you get to go to more national parks.

Alex: Aarin Martinez is from Torrance, California. You write a horoscope column for your school paper?

Aarin: Yes.

Alex: Do you emphasize any particular area? What's it based on?

Aarin: Well, it has to be school-related.

Alex: Ah.

Aarin: So sometimes I look up personalities of each sign, and I try to make up something that would go along with what the person would do.

Alex: Okay. What's your sign?

Aarin: Aries.

Alex: Okay. I'm a Cancer/Leo.

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
John!!!: $9,400
Aarin: $6,600
Sallie: $2,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Sallie snagged the next Daily Double on the 4th clue. Aarin had $7,000, Sallie had $2,800, and John!!! was at $9,000. Sallie wagered $1,000.

EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY $1200: This Quaker leader spent only 4 years in the colony & future state with his name on it, leaving for good in 1701
(Alex [notices Sallie jiggling her signaling button]: You don't have to ring in. It's just you.)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Aarin who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 14th clue. Aarin had $6,200, Sallie had $11,400, and John!!! was at $11,000. Aarin wagered $1,000.

ANIMALS IN POETRY $1200: Ted Walker cleverly likened this colorful pet fish to the "spillings of rich coins on a miser's table"

MUSIC $400: Is it Austin Moon or this actor heard here?

I'm coming right back, /
So stay right here..."

(John: Who is Justin Timberlake?)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
John!!!: $16,600
Sallie: $11,800
Aarin: $7,600

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
TOY BRANDS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
John!!!: Wager $7,001 to cover Sallie.
Sallie: You ought to wager to cover Aarin, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $11,800. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $3,400 (to shut out Aarin) or less than $2,200 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Aarin). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by John!!!.
Aarin: Seeing as you don't have enough money to win on a Triple Stumper (you will lose by at least $2,000), you might try betting $4,201, playing for a win if Sallie tries to two-thirds John!!! (though, from this position, a wager of all $7,600 is acceptable and perhaps preferred as it forces Sallie to cover you).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In 1966 this company produced 706 million elements of its product; in 2011, it produced 36 billion

FINAL SCORES
Aarin: $7,600 - $6,000 = $1,600 (What is Mattel? Barbie) (3rd place)
Sallie: $11,800 - $9,000 = $2,800 (What is Hasbro?) (2nd place)
John!!!: $16,600 - $5,000 = $11,600 (What is Mattel inc.) (Winner)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,000

I like Sallie. she reminds me of a girl named Christy Ragsdale. I knew her when I was a teenager and she was 10.

Had Watership Down for the "Rabbit Hole " clue. Then again, when I was 10, I saw the animated film of the same name.

John and Aarin seemed really collected, but Sallie seemed nervous. I swear I heard her breathing heavily in the interview.

Funny how water polo and polo shirt were next to each other on the board, and a Pixar clue in both rounds (Wall*E in J!, Up in DJ!).

Out of curiosity, did anyone know the clothing store Justice? I remembered one opening at Bay City Mall several years ago, and being surprised that a new chain sought out a far-from-prime mall like that.

====

25/30 and 18/26.

Who the hell is Ross Lynch? I'm sure you can guess who my only get in Music was. I knew Todd in the Shadows had reviewed "Girl on Fire", but stupidly blurted out Rihanna on it.

Triumvirate was an impressive get for John. I wouldn't have gotten that if you'd given me "triumvirat_". I was also amused that the only male on stage knew the name of the members of One Direction.

This seems very vague for a Kids Week FJ! if you ask me. Still, I thought of a toy that would have very large production numbers, and was able to lock the bricks into place right away.

Only because we had one in the mall near me and I thought, "Gee, what a stupid name for a girl's clothing store".
I'm sure you can guess who my only get in Music was.
One more than I got.

I went 0/5 in the music category.

If I remember correctly, the contestants might have only gone 2/5 in that category? I suppose I can gain some solace from that.

Maybe someone aged 16 to 22 would have done better than those kids and also better than 39-year-old me.

For the second night in a row, I thought FJ was on the tricky side for a Kid's Week clue. It wouldn't have been out of place in "grown-up" Jeopardy.

It was one of those clues that might seem impenetrable at first glance, because it feels like they aren't giving you enough information.

But upon reflection, the relevant information is the extremely large number. Enough for every human on earth to have several.

So it has to be something with lots and lots of pieces. I got the right answer, and tried to think of other possibilities just in case -- but "marbles" or "pick up sticks" didn't feel right. So I stuck with my first response.

I remember them because one opened in Bay City Mall about 10 years ago. Besides your thought, I also thought it odd that a relatively new chain would be staking out at a third-tier mall like Bay City. Turns out they're just a rebranding of Limited Too, whose stores in Flint and Saginaw my sister had dragged me into more than once.

They got the One Direction Member and Alicia Keys, and I think the other three were stand-and-stares. (By the by, I like Hunter Hayes, but "Wanted" is a dreadfully boring song IMO. It just has no melody.)

We have one here. I've driven by it, but as my only child is a boy, its not a place we shop. My wife went there a couple times to buy something for her niece. I think it targets the 10-14 age range.

You got twice as many as I got, econ.

I got FJ, but it took a bit. I agree it would have been fine for a regular game.

Count me as another member of Sallie's fan club. Her enthusiasm was great, I'm sure Maggie adored her! This combining her being the same age as my daughter (she'll be 11 in a few weeks) made her be my cheering choice. That's probably why she lost. :)

You were a teenager named Christy Ragsdale? Does that imply you changed your name when you became an adult?

Never heard of it, never seen it (although I've been in a few American malls like one in Grand Forks, ND and the Mall of America), and assumed it was an American thing. Despite being a dad of a tween girl, I clammed, couldn't think of any clothing store my daughter likes (but then she's not too picky about clothes. Maybe that'll change when she starts junior high in the fall.)

Count me in as a member of the Sallie fan club. She was delightful and adorable, the way she shrugged when she didn't know the answer, and how she practically choked the signaling device to death when she rang in. I bet she reminded Maggie of her own bad self at that age!

For some reason, the FJ was an Instaget for me. And loved how the two young ladies leapt off their risers when the game was over. :D

I had to carefully check the spelling on the "Loony" card game because the people at Looney Labs are friends of mine and they make card games.

To be fair, Canadian malls seem to be radically different. I've noticed ALL of them tend to have some combination of Sears, The Bay, Canadian Tire, Walmart, Toys "R" Us, grocery store, mega-pharmacy, and maybe one or two other "wild card" stores. No variety. No surprise when I find something oddball like Costco anchoring an otherwise normal enclosed mall.

You also have tons of miniature enclosed malls that, in America, would just be a regular strip mall — even a major urban area will have a few malls with maybe 20-30 stores each, most of which are service tenants and restaurants. I can understand why, though.

I liked Sallie too, though that kind of thing isn't as cute in an adult contestant. :) She was pretty tickled when she realized she was going home with $2000.

After three kids, FJ was an instaget. My almost-18-year-old son still has a pretty good Lego collection.

Strangely, the rerun game today had the Toys R Us FJ from last year's Kids' Tourney. Gave me a chuckle when I saw today's category.

Even better was her reaction on the clue reversal in her favor (which I knew was coming)! But yeah the only time I recall adults doing that are celebrity games and its not nearly as endearing.

Justice is extremely popular with the pre-teen set. I know many girls who are obsessed with, so yeah, not a problem.

I ran the music category, which I think is a bad thing (EDIT: I didn't after all. I don't know who Ross Lynch is either.). I totally blanked on FJ!

I am also in the Sally fan club. Watching her trying to buzz in on her DD was cute.

Wow- Sallie had lots of fans. My appreciation stems from not only her enthusiasm but also her "JrRangerness."
When I did my 2008 western tour, my friend's boys (8 and 6 at the time) became Jr Rangers in Painted Desert/ Petrified Forest, Zion, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon. Alex (the younger) was so cute when he did it for the first time and Ranger was swearing him in-- rapt attention, hand raised, taking his oath. Nearly 5 years later and I can still see it clear as day.
What's really cool about the program is that it's effective! One of the requirements is to fill a litter bag with at least 10 pieces. It was not easy to do! There were other kids doing the same thing, and I was starting to wonder if litter gathering would start to resemble an Easter egg hunt.
