CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: In our introduction today of Xan Vessels from Mechanicsville, Virginia, you said you wanted to be a phenomenologist. I don't know what that is.

Xan: It's like the study of--it's like things that occur in nature happen because of a phenomenon instead of, like, nature carrying on normally, like...

Alex: Would a volcano be a phenomenon? Would that be part of phenomenology?

Xan: I'm not quite sure.

Alex: Yeah? See, it is kind of strange, isn't it?

Xan: Yeah.

Alex: But good for you. You're pursuing something that's really new. Way to go.

Alex: Holly Boivin is from nashua, New Hampshire. You're three years old?

Holly: Um, three birthdays. [Chuckles]

Alex: Three bir--oh, so you were born on leap day?

Holly: Yes, I was.

Alex: Oh, good for you. That's kind--I've always thought that was a problem because you don't get presents every year on your birthday.

Holly: Yes, actually, I do.

Alex: You do?

Holly: Yes.

Alex: Oh, you trained your parents?

[Holly laughs.]

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: All right, Patrick Aimone from Long Beach, California. We mentioned in the introduction to you that you're a debater and you've debated all kinds of issues. Uh, are you usually given the topic and the side, or do you take a position yourself on every topic?

Patrick: Well, the way it works is we're given the topics beforehand for the different tournaments...

Alex: Mm-hm.

Patrick: ...but you don't know what side you're on until the day of the tournament 20 minutes before the debate, so there's a lot of preparing, even though you might have a sound issue yourself.

Alex: All right, and are you the lead debater on your team?

Patrick: Well, it's seventh and eighth grade, but all the seventh graders are pretty equal. Both my friends and I have placed for second speaker in a debate.

Alex: Mm-hmm. So I would say you're the leader--one of the leaders on your debate team.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THE ELEMENTS $600: All regularly minted U.S. coins today contain some of this element, symbol Cu
(Holly: What is nickel?)

MOVIES $800: In "Ramona & Beezus", Joey King was Ramona Quimby; she played her older sister Beezus

NURSERY RHYME THINGS $1000: These were the wares of the man Simple Simon met going to the fair
(Alex: Simple Simon met a [*] man going to the fair.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Patrick: $9,400

Xan: $1,600

Patrick: $11,000
Xan: $5,600

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
BODIES OF WATER

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Holly: Wager $5,301 to cover Patrick, but no more than $5,499 so as not to fall behind Xan's doubled score.
Patrick: You have the hope of surpassing Holly if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $5,701 to force Holly to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Xan.
Xan: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
This body of water bearing the name of a country borders 5 U.S. states

FINAL SCORES
Xan: $5,600 + $5,400 = $11,000 (What is the Gulf of Mexico) (3rd place)

Good thing we got in our episode this morning in Dallas. For us Time Warner subscribers, CBS is now off the air in Dallas (and some other markets) after some nasty rounds of negotiations. Glad the season is over, and that in a week the show changes channels anyway.

Also, congrats to Holly, who was a joy to watch. And thus ends a memorable Kids Week.

I went 25/30 in J! all this week. Interestingly, I went 25 in DJ! too.

Jack Gantos was probably the most obsure clue this week. Maybe expecting a clue on Tor Seidler isn't so far fetched.

And I can kiss my shot at 5/5 goodbye. I locked onto Lake Ontario right away and wouldn't budge. ONTARIO ISN'T A COUNTRY, YOU DUMBASS.

But didn't you consider the "borders on 5 states" part?

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

A fun game and nice way to end Kid's Week.

As a fellow New Hampshire resident, was rooting for Holly to win, and so glad she did. Now my home state has at least two recent "Jeopardy!" champs!

Not to poke the bear, but was curious how Holly's response for a question concerning BMX. Seems like they really stretched it to give her the win... unlike the other day and the FJ misspelling on Emancipation.

FJ was an okay, okay... not really Instaget, but good enough.

In face, he managed to name the only great lake that touches only one state. Ouch!
This was in fact the slowest "get" for me this week on FJ, almost 10 seconds before I thought of the gulf coast.

I was quite surprised that they didn't accept motocross initially, as it is (from all I've heard) interchangeable with BMX.

I did, but I thought maybe Lake Ontario goes up further than I thought. I also somehow merged it with Erie in my mind, so I was counting PA and OH too. When I fail, I fail BIG TIME.

The map in my head was completely scrambled, so I don't know which direction I was heading. I think I was trying to put the tail end of the lake in Vermont or something. Again, I royally effed up this clue, and I have no idea where my head was.

Bye, Vegas set! We'll miss you!

I felt those two BMS's in DJ! considerably slowed that round down. Thankfully, it was completed.

Another assist today. I was locked onto thinking about rivers until my mom came up with the Gulf of Mexico.

MX refers to powered vehicles (motorcycles, ATV's, etc). BMX is for bicycles.

Congratulations to Holly!

I immediately thought Lake Ontario as well until I remembered it isn't a country, and got the Gulf of Mexico with plenty of time.

Well, congratulations to Holly, but good for Xan too. She looked pretty dispirited but fought through it and stayed in the game till the last.

And Kids Week ends without me ever getting a perfect round.

I went 26 for 30 in tonight's J round. I was perfect in five categories, but 1/5 in movies.

I got FJ, resulting in a 5/5 week for me. It might be "only" Kids Week, but I'll take it. (And they weren't all gimmes.)

Something always gets me in Kids Week to keep me from the perfecto as well. Tonight it was Iron in the J! round. In the DJ! round it's Double Jeopardy!, so there were two I didn't get. Overture in regular clue time went by too quickly. I'd like to think I could have dug the term with DD time. Add me to the list for Jack Gantos. Who?

I had motocross as well and went to BMX on the BMS.

Movies was an easy 5/5 as I've seen all but the Pirates one. Rio is a gorgeous movie well worth a look. Puss in Boots is an annoying dud. Frankenweenie is a typical Tim Burton mixed bag. Ramona and Beezus has a lot of good moments and one heartbreaking plot twist.

The FJ clue was somewhat in the neighborhood of what I recommended from the 1987 game I archived earlier, so I was glad to see it played well. All of the kids had a decent showing and we saw all the clues to give us a nice end to the season.

Next week: Colby vs. ChemTeacher
