Big Countries
In area, it's the largest former Soviet republic after Russia & the largest nation that doesn't border an ocean.
Greg Buzzard: $14,400-$6,600=$7,800
Chris Gaiman: $9,700+$4,701=$14,401...now a 1-day champion with $14,401
Loren Gianini: $4,800-$4,000=$800

Spoiler
What is Kazakhstan? Loren said Ukraine; Greg said Kazkhistan, getting ruled incorrect for misspelling. Not only did he add an "i", but he also seemed to be missing the second "a", though Alex didn't seem to notice.

Hey All-
New poster here. I actually attended this week's games in person, as I was on standby to participate as a contestant. I didn't get on this week, but you'll get to see me in action soon.
I just found this board, and wanted to join in! I didn't realize there were so many fellow geeks out there

I'm never watching again. They knew what Greg meant.
Re: Monday, October 14, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Very clever what they did with the last clue in Current Events.
Well, at least I've heard of four of those five world leaders (all but Kohl).
Anyone clam on "milk" for Agriculture for $200 because they didn't think milk would be measured in pounds? And what was supposed to lead you to "duck" for $1000?
My "When in doubt, just say Univeristy of [Name of State]" kept failing me on State the University. Finally, at $2000, I realized "Oh duh, they want State Universities." Oops. Even worse, I had all five states right.
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was my only get in Judi Dench, since I saw a trailer for it on Wheel a while back.
I went 0/3 in the category, even though I usually do well in animal categories. Dodo/Elephant bird was a huge negbait at $400, IMO, since "huge flightless bird" is staring you in the face. $800 seemed like it could've been any amphibian, with no way to get to frog.
No guess on FJ!

Or not me!
One of those.
I know nothing about the location of all those -stans, so I picked Georgia, as it is easy to spell.

Ukraine is a ridiculous answer; as we've established already this season, it borders Hungary and Austria. But this was the same contestant who, in two straight rounds, went to the top of the board when told there was under a minute to go. Not that it mattered; I thought it was one of the season's most poorly written boards, and the contestants were ok to struggle with it.
The phrasing of the FJ was such to avoid the fiasco that was that old FJ which wanted Mongolia as the world's largest landlocked country.

Re: Monday, October 14, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
In the J! round, I went 20 for 23 in non-agriculture categories, and 1 for 5 in the agriculture category.
I missed "milk" at $200. It very well may have been the mention of "pounds" rather than "liters" or "gallons" that threw me. I briefly thought about the fact that cows produce manure (which is possibly useful as fertilizer), and I guess that just kind of "froze" me.
I also embarrassingly confess that I don't know what soybeans look like. I'm not familiar with "Timothy grass", and I didn't get "duck". Had I gotten that clue as a Daily Double, I might possibly have guessed "goose".
In Zoology at $200, I made the lucky guess of "elephant bird", despite not having heard of it before. I just figured that since they alluded to "Horton Hears a Who" without using the word "elephant" in the clue, that was probably the response they wanted for a top-of-the-board clue.
There were three further clues in the DJ round where I wasn't confident enough in my answer to "ring in", but I probably would have gotten it if it had been a Daily Double of mine on the show. The 1860s for the 19th-century decade where the US debt grew a lot, and "boysenberry", and even "hemotoxin". It's not a word I know, but I just thought: if I had no idea and was forced to guess something, I would just stick a prefix meaning "blood" in front of the word "toxin".
The category name was specific enough that during the pre-FJ commercial break, I tried to pre-call the clue as well as the correct response. I haven't done any research to confirm that I have my facts right, but I was thinking something like "After the breakup of Sudan into two pieces, this became the African country with the largest area."
I tried to think of other geographic facts as well. I know Brazil is the largest country in South America. I probably know the top four or five countries on Earth in terms of area, but I can't swear that I have the order perfectly memorized. I then thought, "Iran is probably one of the largest Asian countries that's not Russia or China, Ukraine is probably one of the largest European countries that's not Russia..."
When FJ came, I wrote down the letters "Ukra", but then, trying to also consider other former bits of the USSR further east, I thought of Georgia and Azerbaijan, and suddenly remembered, "Oh yeah, the 'Stans'! Some of them are huge!"
Was pretty sure that Kazakhstan was very very big -- probably the biggest of all the Stans -- and was also pretty sure that it was landlocked. Got it all written down in plenty of time. (Happened to spell it correctly, but I assume "Kazakstan" or "Khazakstan" or "Khazakhstan" would also be OK on the show.)

Why are you asking? Shouldn't it be up in the archive already? The episode has been over for TWENTY-TWO MINUTES IN SOME MARKETS!!!!!!
Aside from the wisdom of the standing FJ rule, on this one he's arguably adding a little of Kyrgyzstan in there, which gets to the merits.

Re: Monday, October 14, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I think the agriculture category is an example of what the show does especially poorly: ask questions on a subject the show's Subaru Outback-driving contestant base is likely not to be familiar with. If you have heard of Timothy-grass, it's super easy, but I'm not sure how many city slickers come across it. Instead of making the hardest questions in categories where the contestants are most comfortable, they ask that, or how fast a duck grows. I suspect this is because the writers aren't really well versed in the subject, either.
Another pet peeve is the "we'll give you a definition that fits like eight words, but we want the word that's only seven letters long." Usually the contestant either knows it immediately or it goes unanswered. A lazy way to write a question.

He was asking for the last one in Current Events, not the Last Name category. ETA: In 1835 this French engineer described the effect named for him, which influences the direction of ocean currents.

Those all look good to me. I do hate to see someone get knocked out like that on a technicality, even when the rule is applied consistently and correctly.skullturf wrote: Was pretty sure that Kazakhstan was very very big -- probably the biggest of all the Stans -- and was also pretty sure that it was landlocked. When Kazakhstan was revealed to be right I was surprised she spelled it right and had a feeling Greg was about to get screwed over on their hardass spelling rules. I feel Alex really needs to explain that they DO penalize for spelling by default with the exception being when the pronunciation isn't affected, and not vice versa, because it seems the majority of slight misspellings they get are the kind they won't accept.Bamaman wrote:I'm never watching again. (FWIW, I guessed Ukraine too, because I'm about the same level as TPH except I at least take a stab at it if I don't know.)
Is "war bonds" acceptable for the clue where they took "savings bonds?"

Thanks... Yeah, I thought that war bonds was just a subset of savings bonds, but apparently it's more complicated than that?econgator wrote:I forget the clue, but wasn't there a date in it?
