Countries For Short
North Korea is the DPRK; this country is the LPDR.

SpoilerShow
What is Laos? Betsy said Taiwan, though it was incomplete; Tiffany said the Dominican Republic.

Matthew Church: $24,000+$0=$24,000...now a 1-day champion with $24,000
Tiffany Gholar: $11,400-$11,300=$100
Betsy Foss: $9,800-9,799=$1

Not really ideal wagering by the trailers. No reason for third to bet that big if you need second to miss FJ. Second might as well bet it all on the slight chance the leader makes a "tie if wrong" bet.

The leader had a small lock, but I'd still bet something just for fun even if I hated the category.

It took me a few seconds to piece FJ together. The bit about North Korea was a big hint, not sure if I figure it out with just the initials.

Too bad I wasn't on, the board would probably have collective fits over my wager. Once I saw the category, it wouldn't have mattered whether I got to FJ by the skin of my teeth or (much less likely) went in with a score more than three times my nearest opponent's, I would have made it a True Daily Double (and been rewarded too, instaget).

Although, I'll grant there are very few categories I'd do that with. (If the category was "National Anthems", not only would I bet all my money, but I'd add on all the money my opponents had, all the money in my wallet, and all the money in my opponents' wallets ... )

Basically an instaget.

TPH: Because LaGuardia is on the north side of Long Island.

Some great answers in this game, a marsupial gorilla and a machine gun that can shoot a slow bullet.

Didn't think Petrach's Laura was bottom row material or would be a TS.

On seeing the 1930's engineering category immediately precalled Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Hoover Dam, and Golden Gate Bridge. With Hoover Dam unrevealed I would have asked if I could wager infinite dollars on the DD.

Thinking it's 50/50 on TPH having never heard of Laos.

Loved Betsy's clue picking.

====

I can usually do well in animal categories, but I'm not a fan of primates, so running Gorillas was a stunner for me.

Anyone wanna tell me how primates was a TS?

Missed only "pall" in "All".

Oddly, Griffith was my only get in Lawyers. Should've gotten JAG and Ally McBeal at least, but I blanked on both.

0/5 in Code Names.

====

0/5 in Poetic Women. It took until the DD to realize that the subjects were women, not the poets.

Lifeguard was another baffling TS. I had NHO "Staff of Life" and clammed on "Angel of Death" for 3/5 there.

Only $400 in Bitter. I didn't know maraschino was anything other than a cherry, since my mom used to eat them all the time.

I cracked up at "and brownies too" on the marijuana clue. I was laughing so hard that I almost clammed.

3/5 in Rock. I said "all night" on $1600, and NHO the $2000 song.

Gucci was my only get in Florence, surprisingly.

====

Laos? Latvia? No, they're not gonna make it an L country. Too easy. Laos? No, it's not freaking Laos, it can't possibly be. There's gotta be a trick. Whatever I put down will be wrong.

My best categories were 1930s Engineering Feats, and Things
That Are Round: both 4/5.

Picked up Lach trash on "cage" and "pitching machine"

I thought Things That Are Round for $200 should have been
a higher-valued clue. I got all the other clues right in that
category, but not that clue.

I got FJ right. It was an instaget.

For FJ, the very first country that popped into my head was South Korea. I quickly dismissed that, since the letters had no obvious connection. I then figured the correct response was probably a country whose usual English name starts with L, and that the "PDR" probably stood for "People's Democratic Republic" or other words similar to those in North Korea's name.

Laos came to mind simply because it's an L country in east Asia. I wrote it down, but didn't actually know anything about any long name of Laos, or what type of government they have. I also thought of Taiwan as another east Asian country that might have something funny about its long name, but that wasn't enough to switch.

I continued trying to think of other L countries, just in case I was missing one. Libya? They've had some upheaval there; do they have a long unwieldy name? Latvia? Lithuania? Lebanon? Lesotho? I didn't see any reason to move away from Laos, but wasn't 100% confident it was correct.

Matthew was impressive, but I don't know what made him say "marsupials" for "primates".

I didn't think that this board was very good, but it was far from the worst that the show has done.

The $2000 clue on Neil Young/"Free World" was my only get in the Rock 'n Roll category. I got the Lach trash on "cage", "pitching machine", and "Tuscany", and I was very surprised that that last one was a triple stumper.

I had no idea what to do on FJ. I thought that it would be an "R" country, so I just guessed Rwanda.

I usually do horribly at television categories, but that whole category was laughably easy.

I know I wouldn't. Without the Asian country as an e.g., it could've been any "L" country. With Korea on my mind, I just took a stab at what turned out to be correct.

First tell me where those three creatures have pockets. ;) (Marsupials?? seriously??)

ibid. see: "depression" poll results

Then you did better than I did, because I figured out the subjects were women right away and missed them all anyway.

North Korea -- if they gave that country, it follows that the one they are looking for is in the same rough area.

I think everyone just had brain lock on that clue after "ape" was negged.

Would any other country in the vicinity worked the same? or something special about NK? Given with all that is going on with NK, it seems odd that NK was chosen to imply far/south east asia

Rough area more in terms of system of government than geography.
