Literary Quotes
A maxim of Ayn Rand was "Man's ego is" this "of human progress".
Arthur Chu: $20,000+$17,200=$37,200...now a 1-day champion with $37,200
Julie Singer: $18,600-$18,400=$200
Cesar Perez-Gonzalez: $9,000-$9,000=$0

Spoiler
What is the Fountainhead? Julie said the measure; Cesar said equivalent.

Really patchy board for me. Got only 7 right in J!, and four of those were Letter (everything but E.F. Hutton, whom I've never heard of). This means I got Lach Trash on J. D. Souther.
That "lock" category threw me off since the first one picked had "lock" in the middle instead of the beginning. Then the next one (Bullock) had the "lock" syllable pronounced differently from the others. Also, NHO oarlock and clammed on gridlock.
Alda was a stupid miss for me in MDs. I also knew X-Files and Kevorkian, but wasn't 100% sure.
Palace of Nations went entirely over my head. Not a chance on any of them.
John the Baptist was beheaded?!
I thought spinach was far easier than spy satellite. (Those exist?!?) I knew Oral Roberts but was completely blanking on the name.
====
Flags I had marked down as an 0/5 as soon as it came up. You could've given me "Libe___" and I wouldn't have gotten Liberia at $400. I did vaguely recall Mozambique having an AK-47 from an old Bathroom Reader, but didn't want to roll the dice after staring blankly on the previous four.
Oddly, Glen or Glenda/Ed Wood was my only get in Directors. She's Gotta Have It/Spike Lee and Play Misty for Me/Clint Eastwood were NHOIs on the film side, while American Beauty/Sam Mendes and Terms of Endearment/James L. Brooks were NHOIs on the director side.
Derp on Usain Bolt for $2000. Was picturing flamingos but had the word "ostrich" in my mind, and I was like "no, not the pink ones, the other long legged birds." Pronghorn was the only one I had absolutely no shot on.
====
No guess on FJ!

Not sure if I should feel good for getting the FJ! on this one. I have many friends who are ardently critical of Ayn Rand. But I suppose since it's Jeopardy, partisanship and politics must be swept aside, even if it's only a half hour.
Good boards this time around! Though I wasn't on my A-game tonight. Need to get back in the swing of things. Good job to Arthur though, he played like a champ, albeit rather aggressively.

Arthur was very impressive, beating Julie who looked impressive yesterday. I wonder if the Forrest Bounces unnerved Julie.
Picked up Lach trash on "J. D. Souther"
Didn't get FJ.

Re: Tuesday, January 28, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This was an FJ that had potential to be either puzzling or satisfying, depending on whether it "clicked". I'm happy to report that with me, it clicked.
At first, I was like: How can we know this if we don't know the quote? I noticed that many words could fill in the blank and have the sentence make sense, such as "origin" or "source".
But then I tried the following approach, which sometimes works with Jeopardy! clues: What, if anything, is conspicuous by its absence?
The clue mentioned Ayn Rand, but didn't mention the name of any of her works or characters.
I tried to think of any of those things could fill in the blank in the quote. Atlas? Galt? Fountainhead? Hey, that could mean "source". I'm gonna go with it.

One of the better games of the season.
I'm ok with underbetting guy on the right taking a hike.
As for FJ, I wrote Fountainhead.... and then crossed it out and put "engine."

I think this is bizarre sentiment. Was the question somehow endorsing Rand's thought?everestian wrote:Not sure if I should feel good for getting the FJ! on this one. Not suggesting that it is, I just have a weird way of memorizing things and I connect Ayn Rand to not only her works but my friends' criticism of her works.
But I will say I agree with your evaluation of my statement. It truly IS a bizarre sentiment, even if it helped me figure out FJ! for tonight.

My first thought was "object" or "objective," or something of the sort. The correct response occurred to me just before it was revealed, but after time expired.

Re: Tuesday, January 28, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This was indeed a good game, but I have to agree that Cesar was slowing things down.
This was another excellent board, though the "Flags" category was very easy. And I was happy to get the Lach trash on "Haydn."
I would have been way too chicken to go TDD at the bottom of the board in that category. Mad props to the guy who won for making that move.
On FJ, I started off trying to find a word that fit that quote. After about 20 seconds, the light bulb came on and I realized that I needed to match the title of one of Rand's books to the quote. Unfortunately, I went with "Anthem." This one hurts.
I don't blame Julie for wagering big, but there was no point in holding back $200, unless she was trying to play for second place at the same time as she was playing for first place.

FJ was a head slap "of course" at the reveal, but I had no clue and had never heard of any maxim from Ayn Rand.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.
