Thanks!Bamaman wrote:I understand it is in the rules, I just don't like it. I also don't like they don't give both players $2,000 when there is a tie for second, but they didn't consult me.
Again, it is nothing personal, just my opinion. Still, I was quite impressed with how you played today and retro good luck tomorrow.

Re: Thursday, May 15, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This was funny. At the end of DJ I said to them "I was just trying to get positive so I could play Final Jeopardy" and Ken said "oh, you should've said something!" A little hard to do that in the heat of the game though.BigDaddyJ wrote:When you are playing for a million dollars, I think it's kind of a big deal. It was a wrong answer. I was wondering if Ken and Brad might back off a bit on those last few low-dollar clues to let Roger sneak back in for FJ, just as a nice gesture, but I don't blame them a bit for not doing so. They are playing for a million dollars, after all, and who knows how close tomorrow might be.

I thought the clue was something like "gosh my kid's getting so old, I already have to fill out his FAFSA to help him do this."BigDaddyJ wrote:When you are playing for a million dollars, I think it's kind of a big deal. Obviously, apply for financial aid is the best answer, but I think applying for college works here too.

If Alex's answer sheet says "financial aid," wouldn't he glance to the judges when the player says "college application"? (Which we may not see on TV if it's edited out.) Those who were there, can you tell us if this happened?BigDaddyJ wrote:It was a wrong answer. I wish we could see them play a series of individual games continued until one player gets a third win. That would require a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven. That way you'd at least see "normal" wagering strategy instead of the strangeness of two-day-total wagering.

On the FAFSA clue, I don't remember the exact wording (of the clue OR the response) but I felt like "applying for college" was ok. My thinking was along the lines of "You fill out the FAFSA when you are applying for college". The FAFSA itself is for financial aid, but it's part of the process of applying for college.

During the stop in tape right after, he said to the judges "yeah, I just did that with [my son] when he applied to college, so that's why I accepted it."darkgreenblue wrote:If Alex's answer sheet says "financial aid," wouldn't he glance to the judges when the player says "college application"? What did Brad say to Ken just after "Edema-d'oh!" that caused Ken to laugh?

Wow, what a treat! I admit I've been rooting for Ken to get his comeuppance over Brad throughout the entire tournament, but I gotta say I think I'm rooting for Roger now! He's definitely considered the underdog against these two monsters, but he really managed to stay his ground throughout most of the game! I hope he makes a heroic comeback tomorrow, usually those in a distant third come from behind to win the whole thing. Even with his $0, it's not completely unsubstantiated compared to Brad or Ken's totals. Really, anything could happen tomorrow. At this point, each of them deserve to win, because wow. That was a hell of a match, a very weird one at that. Whew. I might need to lay down... that was a lot to take in... :O

Roger, had you pulled edema and had $20k+ going into FJ, would you have bet it all based on the category and who you were playing against?

I don't know this for certain, but I think Roger has the record for most consecutive TDD's. [edit--never mind. his second DD in the quarters wasn't TDD]
I retrospectively wish you good luck tomorrow, Roger. I absolutely agree with your wager on the clue... second row difficulty against the two greatest players ever as a guy who was 25/26 in his Jeopardy career on daily doubles. If you got it correct, you're probably winning about $30,000 to $5,000 to $2,000 right now (assuming Brad and Ken bet bigger on final when trailing by quite a bit).
Also, I got Mt. Rainier right and got way too excited for knowing something Brad didn't.

I wonder how Watson would have done in "Medical Terms,"

The exact clue is "Where did the years go? Time to fill out a FAFSA form to help junior do this"
The answer (question): "What is apply to college?"
Filling out a FAFSA form doesn't help junior apply to college, only to help pay for it. As far as I know, it's not even required if you don't want aid. Maybe "go to college" in an indirect way works, but apply?

Lots of parents fill out FAFSA forms as part of the overall college application process. Fine by me.FAFSC wrote:The exact clue is "Where did the years go? Time to fill out a FAFSA form to help junior do this"

I understand them doing it in celebrity games but I don't care as I hate those games to begin with. But they should not have let Wolf back in the game in the MDCI since that was a serious tournament and not a joke like other celeb games.DHicton wrote:Yes.RCraig wrote:The negative score reset is part of the rules and everyone playing knows that. If it wasn't the rule, don't you think the players might a bit more cautious about going into the negative?
They do this in the celebrity J! tournaments as well. "And Wolf, though you ended up at minus $4600, we're giving you $1000 to bet with," effectively means they're giving him $5600.
Fine with me, though. It means definitively that the final should be considered as two games.
Yes, this is a two game deal, but Roger gets an extra $800 added to his score from today that Ken and Brad do not. And I don't think anyone would hold back if they knew being in the red would carry over to the second day.

If you finish a regular game with -$800, you don't have to pay $800 to Jeopardy. You simply don't win anything*. Roger also won nothing, and his winnings from today will be added to his winnings from tomorrow.Bamaman wrote:Yes, this is a two game deal, but Roger gets an extra $800 added to his score from today that Ken and Brad do not. *Yes, you get a consolation prize, but tournaments have a different structure for consolation prizes.

It seems like we're edging into "wooden leg" territory! I did poorly in the medical terms category but got almost all the other clues. FJ was an instaget. I'm rooting for Brad but Roger continues to impress.
