Alex: Maggie Davis is a violin and viola teacher from Indiana who performs with...a Celtic rock band?
Maggie: That's right. They're called Mother Grove. And we kind of tour around the Midwest. We play Scottish music festivals, Highland games, things like that, pubs.
Alex: Is there a lot of dancing that goes on when you guys are performing?
Maggie: Definitely. Lots and lots of dancing.
Alex: Are you good at the dancing?
Maggie: [inhales sharply] Not too much. But we do have --our, uh, lead singer's girlfriend is an expert at Irish dance, so...
Alex: Okay, good for you.
Maggie: Yeah. [chuckles]
Alex: Manuel Bermúdez originally from Modesto, California, is a legal assistant who was obviously interested in film, because didn't you direct Will Ferrell?
Manuel: I did. I was finishing up film school, and --
Alex: Where?
Manuel: Uh, USC.
Alex: Okay.
Manuel: And the 75th anniversary was coming up. Will Ferrell was hosting the gala event. They needed somebody to direct the opening film. They asked me to do it, uh, and it's probably the highlight of my professional career. No offense to my current employers.
Alex: Okay.
[Laughter]
Alex: Julia Collins is our champion. She, uh, has earned a lot of money on our program. And believe it or not, folks, she's looking for a job. She needs employment. What kind of work would you be happy winding up doing?
Julia: You know, my background is pretty broad, so I'd be happy doing almost anything. I have a B.A. in art history, a master's degree in engineering, so I-I...
Alex: Maybe it would be a good idea if you didn't get a new job this year, because that would --combined with your earnings so far on Jeopardy!, put you into a-a ridiculous tax bracket.
Julia: I think that's a terrific idea.

Well done Julia. Another $18900 for her today, $391600 in total, $30,800 and one win away from Dave Madden's $432,400 and 19 win mark. She'll likely break his winning total by Friday, and maybe tomorrow. Thanks to the CHicago Tribune for spoiling that much before 5PM EST.

Re: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I had low hopes going into FJ with Opera as the subject. The answer gave me no clues at all. So I wrote down the first opera I could think of despite having no clue what it is about. For all I know it might be a comedy.
Imagine my surprise when it was right. Much like the FJ in her first game, putting something down when all I knew was its name, not leaving it blank paid off.
Nice win by Julia with a good penultimate wager to get the lock over two pretty decent players.

Re: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Got everything but Kool & the Gang in "The" Band (you mean "Celebrate" wasn't their only hit?), but had no other gets by the first break.
Was Groupie really that tough? I've NHO the G20, and thought that "F" was a very, very tenuous connection to photography. More tenuous than "dust" = Grapes of Wrath. The other three were equally hopeless to me; I knew only Phillip Morris, but couldn't dredge it up in time.
"Steel Wool" was my only miss in Double Double Vowel.
Slacker means someone with a dead-end job? I thought it meant someone who doesn't like to work at all and gets lazy on the job. NHO the other four terms in that category.
I am clearly too stupid for my own good, because I tried to brainstorm states that end in "-ia", and literally couldn't come up with a single one other than California. I even said "well, there's gotta be a repeat in there, or this is one of those gimmick categories where they use the same answer several times". (What led to Pennsylvania at $1600 over Virginia or Georgia, anyway?)
Opera? Yeah, that's going down as a "no" on my scorecard right away.

Opera? Yeah, that's going down as a "no" on my scorecard right away.

Congrats to Julia on her 18th win!
Manuel was one of the strongest competitors Julia has had.
As is typical of Julia's games, there were a bunch of triple stumpers; I counted 13 of them.
Picked up Lach trash: "photography", "steel wool", "Robert Louis Stevenson", "Pirates", "West Virginia", "Rachel", "Tesla", "Rockies"
Didn't get FJ. Opera is a weak category for me; I wrote down "Carmen" just to have something.

Got my first Final of the week on...an Opera category? Up is down, left is right, cats and dogs living together, etc etc.
Congrats to Julia! She actually had a fight in this one, but damn if that isn't the luckiest DD timing I've seen in awhile. One from Madden...

I thought it was a blatant test of whether or not you've memorized electoral vote counts, which, as outrageous as it seems, I did two years ago. It still seems like an unfair question.TenPoundHammer wrote:What led to Pennsylvania at $1600 over Virginia or Georgia, anyway?
These are the kinds of contestants everyone has been wanting Julia to face and she still got a lock out of it (albeit barely). I hope she can close out the week to get to 20.

Same here... but I wasn't completely surprised. A lot of times on the Jeopardy calendar, a seemingly evil FJ category ends up producing a pretty easy clue. That was the case today... this is one of the few times I'll ever get an opera clue right.zakharov wrote:Got my first Final of the week on...an Opera category? Re: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
The opera date led me to Puccini. I knew of two title character suicides in his operas: Madame Butterfly and Tosca. I am pretty familiar with Tosca and couldn't remember a father's suicide, so I went with the opera I didn't know and was happy I was right.
I thought this was a pretty difficult FJ and was surprised by the two gets, and that the musician was not one of them.
Congratulations to Julia. I'm hugely impressed by someone who can master both art history and engineering.

I agree that it was difficult, and I wasn't able to get it in time, but if you're going to ask for the number of electoral votes of any state, states like Florida or Pennsylvania or Ohio are the fairest ones to ask, since they are relatively populous states that tend to be in play in presidential elections. (There's also an element of "try to read the writer's mind" -- if they mention electoral votes at all, maybe that itself is a clue that the state is one that's talked about during presidential elections.) I agree it was tricky, though.skygilbert wrote:I thought it was a blatant test of whether or not you've memorized electoral vote counts, which, as outrageous as it seems, I did two years ago. (Without looking it up, I think maybe Florida has 27 electoral votes -- that's the only one I think I know offhand, based on it getting mentioned during the 2000 election.)

Congratulations to Julia! She's amazing.
I was surprised when Manuel answered "What is Texas?" in response to a clue in the category about state names ending in -IA.

Bamaman wrote:I had low hopes going into FJ with Opera as the subject. The answer gave me no blues at all. So I wrote down the first opera I could think of despite having no clue what it is about. For all I know it might be a comedy.
A comedy opera? In the words of Bugs Bunny: "What were you expecting from an opera? A happy ending?"

Starting to run out of ways to congratulate Julia for her run... very impressive.
The category of Opera for FJ? Oh my aching head --- my weakest category and I couldn't come up with the answer.
Looking forward to tomorrow's game!

Congrats to Julia on win #18!
After all the easy boards that we have seen lately I found this one to be a good deal harder. The J! round was especially rough for me, but the DJ round wasn't exactly kind either.
I got FJ mainly from the year.

Started strong with 4/5 in bands; 4/5 in Asian history; 4/5 in sorry, and 3/5 in doubles. In Double, I did surprisingly poor in MLB teams (I know all the teams and I took French, but I'm no expert by any means- only got Red Sox); only Virginia and Georgia in states- had to think fast and blanked. No Lach trash.
No real clue for FJ. I first thought of Carmen and then Pagliacci because Cosmo Kramer referred to him as "the sad, tragic clown" in Seinfeld. I have heard of Madame Butterfly.

*Angry sigh*
Right composer, wrong opera (La Boheme, forgetting the "title character" phrasing of the clue).
Edit: Picked up plenty of Lach Trash on the Bible category. If I am ever on the show, I hope I get such a category.
