CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Guy Wilson is a football coach and a tutor, and there's an interesting story that has to do with your wedding, and I'd like you to tell the folks about the ring bearer and what the circumstances were.

Guy: Well, we had Jack, that had been the football team ball boy for years, bring the wedding rings in on the football laced in with the threads.

Alex: Laced in with the threads?

Guy: With the threads of the football.

Alex: Both rings?

Guy: Yeah.

Alex: Okay, that's just great.

Alex: Heather Powell is from Pennsylvania, and you have something in common with my son, Matthew. He is now 23 and would enjoy going to the Coachella music festival. Now, you went to the Coachella festival this past year?

Heather: I did for the first time.

Alex: For the first time.

Heather: At age 43.

Alex: So, you're there surrounded by teens and people in their early 20s. What was the experience like?

Heather: You know what? It was wonderful. I have a friend, who actually is here with me today, who has been going for several years and had been trying to convince me to go, and last year, the lineup just looked great. It was great going with a veteran because she knew all the tricks, and we had an amazing time. It was wonderful.

Alex: Good for you. All right.

Alex: Now we come to our champion, Sarah Fremgen, who is a microbiologist, which means you're working on what at the moment?

Sarah: Specifically, I'm working on Lyme disease at the moment. So, looking at what genes make it make us sick.

Alex: All right. Well, let's find something that can deal with that problem.

Sarah: Yes.

I think Alex is starting a little too soon by asking if Sarah could be the next big winner. I have yet to see yesterday's show. I think she's talented, knowledgeable and can be very good on the buzzer. However, I remember some contestants who got off to a stronger, faster start, only to lose not too long after. Still, congratulations to her on her second win.

Is space center acceptable for planetarium? That was my answer on the first clue. Said Seven Years War instead of 100 Years War. I also said Smith instead of Young.

I thought creationism was pretty easy for a $1,200 clue.

For final, I was running the songs through my head. I considered "Love Me Do," "Can't Buy Me Love," "Ticket to Ride," but then something flashed and I remembered the correct answer in time.

Michigan Odds & Ends and What Kind of Animated Animal Are You? Me gusta.

…and no me gusta. I couldn't for the life of me think of a building that would be associated with an astronaut. My dad lived in Grand Rapids for five years, and I had never heard of that planetarium. Hate it when $200 is my only miss.

I also whiffed on the last Animated Animal since I've never seen Ice Age. Or anything else by Blue Sky, for that matter. And since when are there animated versions of Babar?

Differs by One Letter threw me too. At $400, I couldn't get away from "fragile" in time, and at $1000, I have NEVER heard of "filial" or "finial".

What led to "cigar" on Wrapper's for $200? I almost WAGged stuffed grape leaves because it was the only thing I could think of that involved wrapping and leaves.

Hands up: Who else said "WHAT! IS! SPARTA!" on In the Past for $800?

Oddly, $1000 was the only Changed clue where I had even an inkling. I knew it was Metamorphosis, but couldn't pull the guy's name.

Lach Trash: "Jingoism". "Conservatism" was my only miss in the category.

Instaget FJ! I think a limited knowledge of Beatles songs helped me not overthink this.

It looked like a runaway early for Sarah, but the others came on late to make it a close game at the end.

I'm not a music person, so I wasn't thrilled with the category. But it was an instaget, though I spent 30 seconds trying to a recall a three word song of theirs.

I am deeply ashamed at missing this FJ. For some reason I thought they had a song named "Girl" and stuck with that. I am a dumb butthead and will go hide my face in shame.

No trash for me today. I negged on Schweppes for the Ginger Ale question - anyone else?

I wonder what Brian would've thought about Guy increasing Ireland's population 15-fold :D

Instaget, almost before Alex started reading the clue. This one might clear 90%.

Congrats to Sarah on a well-played game!

Picked up Lach trash: "planetarium", "Dearborn", "lentils"

Instaget FJ. I knew it even before Alex finished reading the clue.

FJ was so easy, I spent the rest of the time second guessing myself, like "is the exclamation point part of the title? Did Girl ever make it to #1?"' But stuck with my initial guess.

I thought the last DJ answer of conservatism was way overvalued. Much easier than Jingoism.

The Beatles did record a song named "Girl" but it was not a #1 song. In fact, it did not make the Billboard charts at all.

Good job by the two challengers in the DJ round. The champ had a big early lead, but the challengers made it close.

I had a good game, getting Dearborn, Samsa, and Wendell Wilkie (who I largely know about from trivia games). I was reasonably confident on "eyebrows" and "jingoism" but might have been hesitant to ring in on the show.

I missed the planetarium one. Somehow I subconsciously thought a clue at the top of the board could only refer to an "obvious" structure like a school, hospital, library, or airport, so I said "airport" as the one most likely to be associated with astronauts.

This FJ wasn't quite an instaget for me, but I did settle on the correct answer before too long. The very first song title to pop into my head was "Love Me Do", but I figured the correct answer was probably shorter than eight letters. Next, I tried to think of one-word titles. "Rain" came to mind, but I was almost certain that wasn't a #1 hit. Then, the correct response came to me, and I wrote it down. I felt pretty good about it, since four letters seems like a good candidate. I tried to think of they had any multi-word three-letter titles like "I Do" or "I Am" or something like that. Or single-word three-letter titles, like "Ham" or "Gun" or something. Nothing else came to mind, and four letters seemed likely to be the "right" length.

And to be fair, Chafee is not what I'd call one of the "famous" astronauts. Yes, he did tragically die as one of the Apollo 1 astronauts, but he doesn't get the name recognition of Glenn, Aldrin, or Armstrong.
Although, he was a Naval aviator, so airport is a good neg, at least. :)

Sara played very aggressively. I think she is the better player and the Irish champ from Monday was just a weak player.

For most, I think FJ was either an instaget or a stumper. Thinking too hard is the enemy there.

Picked up Lach Trash on Dearborn, Gregor Samsa, and Wendall Willkie. FJ was about as easy of a music FJ as I have seen. Good game personally for me, and an exciting game to watch with evenly matched and competent contestants.

THE WRAPPER LEAF FOR THESE, LIKE COHIBAS, IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE LEAF USED
An expensive natural wrapping is associated with cigars.
