Re: TD 195: The Beautiful Game
Alright, after having been absconded to the Nashville area, I'm back and actually able to post updates.
7. The Olympic Games still hold a men's soccer tournament every year. Currently the teams that are fielded are made up of players under the age of 23, with three overage players allowed. Curiously, Brazil, who has qualified for every World Cup, has yet to win an Olympic gold medal in soccer.
Q: Name any country that's won the Olympic gold medal in men's soccer. (18 answers)
Since for a long time the Olympics were amateur only, it only makes sense that quite a few answers here are those with "amateur" teams. And you've given us:
SPAIN - 4 points
mennoknight, CheezeWhiz, dnbguy, xxaaaxx
ARGENTINA - 4 points
Leander, chalupabatman786, MarkBarrett, Paulsaysthought
FRANCE - 4 points
CrunchyTaco, zakharov, Bamaman, amorris525
NIGERIA - 4 points
tjconn728, dklee12, ihavejeoprosy, goforthetie
GREAT BRITAIN - 2 points
geolawyerman, mitchparov
ITALY - 2 points
Turd Ferguson, jepkid97
MEXICO - 1 point
CoachP
Not given to me were:
Canada, Belgium, Uruguay, Sweden, Hungary, USSR, Yugoslavia, Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Cameroon
And there's going to be a very painful neg in there as FIFA considers "Germany" to trace through West Germany, and not East Germany. Negs are worth 9 here.
BRAZIL
gamawire, Paucle, JoshuaRQI
GERMANY
econgator, dott888
GREECE
DadofTwins
UNITED STATES
jjwaymee
And that puts the scores at:

8. Every continent has their own continental championship. Here in North America, that's the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup has been contested 12 times between teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Only North American teams have won it - Mexico six times, the United States five times, and Canada once.
Q: Name a CONCACAF member (other than Canada, Mexico, and the United States) who has competed in the Gold Cup at least once since the inaugural tournament in 1991. (15 answers)
If I had to guess, sheep are going to be Costa Rica and Honduras, given they're in the World Cup this time. What say you?
COSTA RICA - 6 points
Leander, DadofTwins, mitchparov, jepkid97, dnbguy, ihavejeoprosy
HONDURAS - 6 points
econgator, CheezeWhiz, MarkBarrett, Paulsaysthought, CoachP, dott888

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - 3 points
zakharov, jjwaymee, xxaaaxx
JAMAICA - 2 points

MARTINIQUE - 1 point
chalupabatman786
NICARAGUA - 1 point
dklee12
CUBA - 1 point
Bamaman
GUADELOUPE - 1 point
amorris525
What didn't you give me?
Guatemala, El Salvador, Haiti, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Normally I'd say here that a neg was worth 11... but guys, for once, we have no negs! Great job! What's that make the score?

9. The United States are wearing red jerseys at this World Cup. This is the first time we've seen the Yanks in red at the World Cup since June 15, 1998, a 2-0 loss to Germany. (Incidentally, current USMNT coach Jürgen Klinsmann scored for Germany in that game.)
Q: Name any nation that has worn a predominantly red jersey for at least one game in any of the last three World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010). (21 answers)
Guessing the sheep are Spain and Ghana (since they wore them against us). What do we have?

And four out of the five are wearing red jerseys this year, so not a bad idea. What're the scores?

10. The film Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl features a wonderfully done sketch depicting a football match between two teams of philosophers - Germany versus Greece.
Q: Name any philosopher who was supposedly on the pitch at the start of this alleged game. (25 answers)

It could be worse. To my recollection there are three TDs (35, 38 and 68) yet to be finished, even though their creators are still posting on this board. (Two of them are even participating in this contest!) TD35 was posted in 2009.

Re: TD 195: The Beautiful Game
TD 68 was mathematically impossible to score.
I made the scoring system so that a player's best and worst answers (out of 5) dropped. But what made an answer "best" and "worst" changed as players had answers dropped, then added back, then dropped again.
So that game simply ended with no winner.

Did the points of the other players change as well when an answer was dropped?DadofTwins wrote:TD 68 was mathematically impossible to score.

You could have decided to use the "pre dropping" points, and just drop the best and worst answer before the drops of other players are factored in. Obviously you would then have to disregard the fact that, in the end, it might not be their best or worst answer that gets dropped.

"Beautiful Game" my ass. Twenty guys run up and down the field for ninety minutes like ants on amphetamines, and no one can score.
Then they concede that no one can score, give up playing soccer altogether, and go to a different game to "settle the game." As if a baseball game or a football game were a scoreless tie after regulation and they "settled it" by a home run derby or a field goal kicking contest. Again, wake me when it's over.

I dunno... a field goal kicking contest would be great if they made the whole o-line participate.John Boy wrote:As if a baseball game or a football game were a scoreless tie after regulation and they "settled it" by a home run derby or a field goal kicking contest. Again, wake me when it's over.
Home run derby not so much...St Louis would hate it. Hmm...actually...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Don't know why I'm responding, but there were just 8 goals scored in one game yesterday. Your second sentence is already incorrect, and so I stopped reading.John Boy wrote:"Beautiful Game" my ass.
