Teen Tournament Pre-Calls

Post by Ryno » Thu Jul 17, 2014 1:12 pm

With the Teen Tournament coming up, I am thinking about the sort of clues that we'll see. There's been a J! tradition of going with the latest trends and fads in pop culture, young adult fiction and, more often in the last few years, computer/websites/texting/social media speak.

As someone who likes to stay current with what the kids are into these days, I like to brainstorm and predict what kind of clues will be seen in the Teen Tournament. On the pop culture front it seems like there is stuff that's been popular over the past few years (e.g. Hunger Games) and things that just became hot within the past year. Here are some predictions on past year trends/items that I think are bound to come up:

- Divergent (trilogy book series)(since Hunger Games was so popular a year ago)
- Divergent (the movie)
- Veronica Roth (author of the Divergent series)
- Beatrice "Tris" Prior (protagonist of Divergent)
- Dystopian or Apocalyptic
- Dauntless
- The Fault in our Stars (book & movie)
- Josh Boone (author of the Fault in our Stars)
- Cancer
- Shailene Woodley (In both Divergent & Fault of our Stars movies)

Ok, that's a start. As for music, I was thinking of Iggy Azalea, but J! producers may think she is a little too risqué for Teens. Please feel free to add more.

I am not up on recent pop culture too well, but I would love to see a clue on Girl Meets World.

I'll also predict a clue on some combination of "Happy," Pharrell Williams, or Despicable Me 2.

Any of the Pixar movies are probably fair game. You also can't count out Twilight, Harry Potter, or The Hunger Games.

The author is John Green. Josh Boone is the director of the movie.

Rihanna, Adele, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. They always seem to come up in the Teen Tournament.

Maybe not Adele this time, since she hasn't released a new album in a year or so. More likely it would be someone like Lorde or Iggy Azalea.

Yeah, there will be a ton of Lorde. Maybe Miley Cyrus will feature as well.

Of course, how did I overlook Lorde, she had to be in there, she is the same age as the contestants.

Sitting here thinking, "What? What did I do?" Then I realized that those artists all have one-word title hits. I guess that could be a whole category in itself.

You may be thinking of something different, though.

Yes. Yes, I was. The coincidence that these are all songs covered by Weird Al in releases released this week did not escape me.

I'll pre-call Mindy Kaling and Jennifer Lawrence. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rainbow Rowell in a clue, though she's less of a sure thing than John Green. While Glee is on its way out, they may reference either the show or Cory Monteith's death last year. Aside from that, not really sure which teen TV shows are noteworthy these days. Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries, maybe?
