TD 202: Lea-TDer of the Flock

Welcome to TD #202, where the early bird gets the singleton!

First, the basic rules, unashamedly copied and edited from #201.

1. All answers MUST be sent to me by PM (NO POSTING IN THE THREAD) by (TBA).

2. The goal of the game is to have the lowest combined total.

3. Scoring:
AUTOMATIC EARLY BIRD BONUS: If your answer turns out to be the sheep and you
were the first to offer it, you score one point for that question.

a. For each correct answer, you will receive an amount of points equal to
the number of people who gave that same answer.
b. For each incorrect answer, you will receive an amount of points equal to
two times the "sheep," (highest scoring correct answer).

4. Throughout the game, you may use up to two bonuses.
a. DROP - 0 points earned for that question. (one use).
Note: if you use the drop at all, you cannot earn any early bird bonuses.

b. SHEEP - the sheep amount. (one use, unless you don't use your drop, then two)
For this, first declare SHEEP, and offer an answer. If it's wrong you score the sheep instead of the penalty.
If it's correct, it's scored normally.
Note: no early bird bonus on any question on which you declare SHEEP, even if you get a legitimate sheep.

5. As always, NO CHEATING! All answers should come from your brain.

Questions should be available within 24 hours, waiting on my fact checker! There are only 10, so it shouldn't take you long to zip through them!

Here are the questions.
Submit your answers via PM
NOT IN THIS THREAD PLEASE!
Clock closes Tuesday, 23:59 Eastern Time SHARP.

(Don't forget to double-check how to use your optional drop/ sheep helps down below.)

1. Eight V-POTUSs share their surname with a POTUS.
Identify a PAIR: list the V-POTUS first, followed by the POTUS with whom he shares his surname.
Any interchangeable pairs are considered unique, allowing for 10 possible answers.
(Always thought "share" needed two people, but I guess it doesn't! For these purposes, it does. Otherwise there'd be 20 answers.)

2. Name one of the 10 MLBaseball Hall of Famers who began and ended his career in the same city but in opposite leagues (National and American only, none of that "Federal League" crap) ;)

3. Name one of the two largest moons of a planet in our solar system. (Must have 2 moons to qualify; 10 possible)

4. Name the Capital of Australia, or one of the local (State/ Territorial) capitals. No need to ID the political division, just the city is fine.

5. Name a type of shot used in pool/ billiards. (8)

6. Name one of the 9 marks used in English Heraldic cadency (coats of arms).

7. Name one of the 10 systems of the human body.

8. Name one of the actors (all male)who comprised Danny's Ocean's Eleven (original 1960s cast).

9. Name one of the 9 major types of coal.

10. Identify one of the movie titles below from the really short, very odd review written about it anagramatically.
NOTE: pencil/ paper is allowed for this question, or even scrabble tiles, but NO internet sites.

A: His Party, A Broken Harp, and a Frozen Otter (2004)
B: View Degenerate Pubes (1985)
C: Not Worth Fire Engine (1974)
D: Weird Boner Haunt (1981)
E: Hit a Tormenter (1984)
F: A Lethal, Lying, Jew (1996)
G: nee Moth Stifles a Belch (1992)
H: Romantic Hairy Sex (1998)
I: A Dainty Grin (2001)
J: Air Loss (1972, 2002)
K: Beef in a VCR (2002)
L: Gun Lie Film: Crown Boob (2002)

Available bonuses: One drop and one sheep, or two sheep. Or, none.
The Early Bird bonus: every sheep has a "leader of the flock," the first person to have given that answer. They score only one point (but no singleton credited.)
If more than one answer ties for most popular, the solo will be awarded to the earliest overall entrant among those answers.
To use your SHEEP: declare SHEEP, then answer as usual. If wrong, you earn the sheep. If correct, scored as usual.
No EBB anywhere to anyone who uses their drop. No EBB if you declare SHEEP on that question.
Ties are broken by first most true singletons then earliest entry.

So for the early bird bonus, does this apply for every question as long as you don't use drop or sheep?

Yes. If you use your DROP, you can't EBB any question.
If you use SHEEP on a question, you cannot EBB only that question.
Any other question qualifies for the EBB.
(Again, you are allowed two helps: one of each, or two SHEEPS.)

Can I answer 42 to every question right now so I either get a singleton or a single point for coming up with the potential sheep first?

Isn't this a massive advantage to anyone who happens to be online when the questions are posted?

I think it would be more amusing to adopt the rules of TD #200. It would make no sense, of course, but it would make for one crazy TD. ;)

As in, Paucle provides the probable sheep answer, everyone rushes to be the first person to give it, and all other entrants are doomed to ridiculously high sheep scores? Or everyone knows that this will happen, leaving the provided answer either singletoning or unused?

I'm not planning on hosting a TD anytime soon, but when I do, I might go for some insane twist?

BobF wrote:Can I answer 42 to every question right now so I either get a singleton or a single point for coming up with the potential sheep first?
If you like I can take 10 42s as your answer sheet, sure. I don't think I have any questions where it's the right answer, though, so you'd have 8 wrong (unsheepable), and if you used your two SHEEP options, those are ineligible for EBB.
goforthetie wrote:Isn't this a massive advantage to anyone who happens to be online when the questions are posted?
Massive? No. Advantage, perhaps. But it's not a matter of merely being first-- it's being first with the sheep.
If the first 25 entrants scatter 10 answers pretty evenly, and #26 happens to give an answer that 15 people pile onto, #26 gets the EBB. Wanna bet he didn't see them first?

Sure, it's possible, but the likelihood of being the first to sheep is much much greater for the first player than the 20th. If 15 players give the sheep answer out of 50, it's more likely than not that the first sheep answer comes within the first 2 players.

(Not to mention that the whole strategy changes for someone who is pretty sure that he's first - you can aim for sheep on questions you don't have a great answer for.)

Many times the sheep is an obscure answer and the obvious one is a singleton.

Yes. But with a game like this, will more people go with the obvious? This is going to be very very interesting.

This is one of those rare TDs where there are more comments about the rules than the questions themselves.

Let's play guess the questions while we wait. Give first and last names of brothers who pitched in Major League Baseball and combined for over 125 wins between them?

Anyone matching me with Lindy & Von McDaniel would have me steamed when the rest of you should have been fighting over the Niekros, Perrys, Martinezes, Deans, Madduxes, and I would even leave you the Mathewsons.
