I about plotzed when I saw it, especially as the "tough" set. Free points!
Me too! I was not working retail in 1988, but I watched a LOT of MTV and listed to AT40 every Sunday on the radio. Yet another day just one question short of perfecto. Good start for the week for me. :)
1988 was the year I graduated high school, so these were pretty easy for me. I hated most of the pop music of the era, but luckily there weren't any real toughies in this set. I'm sure if there was, say, a question about Taylor Dayne I probably would have faltered. :)

I also answered "The Jetsons" which does, if you include the article, contain 10 letters. Once again, I am done in by not thoroughly reading the clue.
Teems with quiet fun.

I didn't even notice the letter count! It turned out to be a good category for me, though.

Got all of the "Je"s pretty easily except for the 2-pointer. Knew it was Shakespeare, and that's about it. (Yes, I know more MUCH more about a certain Mr. Bodine than I do about Yorick.) Had to go through the whole alphabet to find the most logical 4-letter "Je" word. Had it down to 2 choices; fortunately, I didn't select "Jerk".
Sheepin' it real.

Should have been confident enough to pull the trigger and write "Mary" and "Cheap Trick" for the respective categories. Oh well. Also had the lack of confidence w/Kyoto. The wording of the question made me think about it too much.

Oh yeah, Chichén Itzá is Mayan, not Aztec.

Would you call the Aztecs "Central Americans"?

I did the same thing. I didn't even make the connection for some reason. Gosh, I am off today.

I got sucked into The Jetsons as well. And I just couldn't come up up with what "SJ" stood for. If it had said Society of Jesus, I would have been all over it.

If it'll get me those six points back (thanks to stupid second-guessing), I'll call them Shirley.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I thought the Accra-Ghana question was the easiest of the second set, as it came down to "name the country" and had nothing to do with ancient empires. Plus IMO, Accra being one of the easier West African capitals to remember.

I came very close to writing "TheJetsons" before playing the Jetsons' theme song in my head (it's amazing how long those tunes stay hard-wired) and didn't hear any references to apartments.

To my TV-ignorant mind, the clue described the Jetsons perfectly, and including the article in the letter count seemed fairly normal...

The category was Crossword Clues "JE". "TheJetsons" was going to be wrong no matter how many letters it had or how closely it fit the clue.
