2014 Summer Hiatus Challenge -- Round 3, Day 6

Post by DadofTwins »

This is later than I meant it to be.

Sorry about that.

Anyway, this round will stay open until 11:59 PM PDT Sunday. I hope that gives everybody enough time to get your responses in.

Good luck.

RECENT EUROPEAN HISTORY

2: Signed in 1992, the Maastricht Treaty sets the criteria by which countries can become part of this “zone;” Lithuania will become the nineteenth in 2015.

4: Ironically, on January 1, 1990 Poland became the first country to withdraw from this military alliance since 1968.

6: After the 1989 Velvet Revolution brought an end to Communist Party rule in this country, the Velvet Divorce saw it break in two.

8: The South Ossetia War led to Georgia's withdrawal from this supranational organization, formed in 1991 as a successor to the Soviet Union.

10: Negotiations to end Northern Ireland's “Troubles” resulted in an agreement in Belfast on April 10, 1998 – this religious holiday.

COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY BENEFACTORS

3: The College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was given this monosyllabic name in 1804, after the family on whose farm it was built.

6: A North Carolina school is named for the father of this industrialist who, early in the 20th century, held a monopoly on manufactured cigarettes.

9: He donated $150,000 to build this land grant college in Lafayette, Indiana later named for him.

12: Initially named for town founder Henry DeLand, this Florida university was later renamed to honor the hat manufacturer whose funding kept the school running in the 1890's.

15: The founder of this Houston university was murdered in 1900 by his lawyer who hoped to cash in on a fake will.
