Hollywood Reporter ran an interview with Trebek. Not sure if he's implying Brad would be a good candidate to replace him, or if he thinks Brad is an example of why the show will endure. Also, the idea of Trebek and Bob Barker having lunch is charming.

That looks a lot like the special coverage of a brush fire that pre-empted my last game on Channel 6. They even interviewed a woman who was worried about her son's pets being locked up in a burning house (which didn't happen, everybody's dogs are fine) The anchors acknowledged that people had tuned in wanting to see the local woman go for her third win on Jeopardy! but this was important. Lives were at stake. Although the only real damage was a garden shed burning to the ground. Even so, it was big news (the other channel was covering it live) so my Jeopardy! game was broadcast at 2 am and instead, everyone got to see twenty minutes of a fire engine parked by trees with a bit of smoke. The dashboard camera footage of the tornado was way better.

My take: if you're directly affected by the fire, or the tornado, or whatever disaster has befallen some part of the viewing area, why are you sitting in your house watching television? Shouldn't you be getting the hell out of there?

Oh brother. I just want to reach into the screen and punch their self-righteous faces hard enough to jostle their point-missing brains. They find the rare case where this kind of thing might merit more than a screen crawl and act like that's the only time they pre-empt Jeopardy!. Maybe in their market, that's true, and I'm really just venting about my local yahoos. I've missed the show because local news wanted to show a high-speed car chase or moderately severe weather or the death of Nelson Mandela.

I suppose it's churlish to complain when the breaking story involves human tragedy. But sometimes I need a distraction precisely because of the tragedy, about which I can do nothing.

Many stations, including my local affiliate, have secondary channels they could use to broadcast the breaking news (while putting a crawl under Jeopardy! to tell you about it in case you want to change channels). Or they could bump Jeopardy! to the secondary channel. I could set Windows Media Center to record the show regardless of channel. My local station chooses not to do this.

They could move Jeopardy! to a different time slot in the middle of the night or even on the weekend. Mostly, they choose not to do this.

When they do move it because of a schedule conflict rather than breaking news (as happened with this past Olympics), they could announce the time and date on their web site. They choose not to do this.

They obviously have no respect for fans of the game and no desire to accommodate us when something they deem more important comes up. We are nerds who can safely be ridiculed, ignored, and occasionally lambasted in a self-serving, dishonest, preening way. They'd stomp on our glasses and kick sand in our faces if they could.

I know I've posted this story before, but I'll repeat it: when I got home from work on 9/11/01, I turned on the TV and every channel I could find was carrying coverage of the day's events - as I mentioned before, something like that is completely understandable to pre-empt programming with but after a few hours of coverage (and by this time the events were at least 8 hours old), I just couldn't take any more. No one could. I wanted a diversion. I noticed, though, that The Comedy Network (like a Canadian version of Comedy Central) was having regular programming, that was just what the doctor ordered. I wrote my first, and so far only, thank-you letter to a TV station for running regular programming. (Hell, I would have appreciated Home & Garden Television running regular shows then, but a comedy channel just made it that much better.)

Word. The ratio of necessary to unnecessary programming break-ins for your average local station is about 1:20 IMHO. Then there's the huge weather radar graphic that covers 1/4 of the screen when they aren't breaking in to the program. Hey local news idiots, there is an overwhelming majority of viewers who have the ability to open their laptop and check the weather radar themselves.

Neither one of which I could get in Canada. (I suppose there were other networks that had programming, like Treehouse TV (the channel geared at preschoolers), but Comedy Network is the only one I could remember.)
