Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought going for a lock tie if you're wrong isn't an awful play, though I guess 1k as opposed to a win makes a difference. Pleasantly surprised at Tess' $0 wager.

25 right again, a couple of bad categories in regular Jeopardy threw me off. Not my best start.

Also missed final. Knew it wasn't Paris like I felt would be a trap, but I (mistakingly) thought Oslo was further north enough to compensate.
If you are going for second in a lock-tie, the bet is fine. But if she had doubled up in FJ, she only gets $1,000 since they break a tie for second by who led going into FJ, they do not have co-second places like they do co-champs.

But even if she were unaware if that rule (do they cover that in the pre-game talk?), her FJ bet was very bad.
I’ll admit it wasn’t the most logical wager, but I let pride get in the way, and the potential humiliation of ending the game with $0, for me, outweighed the potential non-victory of a symbolic 2nd-place tie that came with no extra cash attached. I knew there was really no way I could win at that point. My only hope was that Tessa would wager something and miss (or, much less likely, that Bill would pull a Cliff Clavin-style cockup) -- though it looks like Tessa had been studying up on the wagering strategies as well and knew about the rule on 2nd-place ties.

Whatevs. I had already accomplished what I came there to do (never ever thought I’d make it to Jeopardy, much less win!), so I don’t begrudge Tessa that extra $1,000. Now she gets to actually cover all her travel expenses, which is more than I can say for poor Steve the Pilot -- whose birthday was actually Monday, Sept. 15, sadly.

Congrats to Bill, my fellow South Carolinian-turned-Washingtonian! South Cackalacky represent!

Thanks, Elizabeth! Although I will note that DC was just my tryout location. Pennsylvania is home for me these days.

Oof. After seeing so many discussions about whether or not [insert name of work and/or celebrity here] is biased toward [political view that the person doesn't like], it's no wonder that I'm slowly deciding to become apolitical.

As I recall, we had a similar discussion about a very close alternate answer there, too.
I was away from the boards at the time, so I don't know what the discussion was about. What was the plausible other answer? Tallin and Riga, I suppose? But the fact that they are giving the exact latitude is a big TOM - the clue only makes sense if it means "What are the two northernmost capitals with a relatively short land distance between them?" That's not a bad clue, although it won't get an award for creativity.

By contrast, there is no TOM in Tuesday's clue at all. You either have to know their exact distances from London (pretty much impossible) or their populations (neither is too far from a million, and city populations are silly statistics anyway).

I wonder why they did it then. Any idea?

In most everything else, no, but as far as EWR goes, yeah, it's New York.

Tessa projected this weird government employee vibe. It's the difference between "it is my pleasure to serve you" and "I'm serving you because it's my job." Guess which food server gets a bigger tip?

Off-camera audio can easily be re-dubbed at a later date.

There's still the issue that he didn't actually say "Jeopardy! welcomes", at least not on my recording.

They don't put that much effort into episodes already in the can. Re-dubs are done during breaks in the taping. And if Jeopardy really wanted to do a tribute to Don Pardo, they'd be a lot less subtle than merely changing the text of Johnny's intro.

Why would you 3D a 2D projection?... just inspect the 3D intracranial globe.

Figured it came down to Brussels or Amsterdam, and since Calais is the closest continental point to the UK, that means Belgium is closer than the Netherlands, which let me lean Brussels.

Apparently Paris is much closer than I thought... http://www.sporcle.com/games/RobPro/clo ... als-london

I haven't kept systematic track of it, but I believe Johnny has varied his intro before. Besides "Here are" and "Please welcome," I think he has also said "Let's meet" and maybe other variants as well. The classic form for him was "Entering the studio are today's contestants," back when they did that.

According to http://gameshows.wikia.com/wiki/Jeopard ... tchphrases, the standard introductions are:

Monday's Opening Spiel: Let's meet today's contestants.
Tuesday's Opening Spiel: Introducing today's contestants.
Wednesday's Opening Spiel: Here are today's contestants.
Thursday's Opening Spiel: Please welcome today's contestants.
Friday's Opening Spiel: Today's contestants are...

I've never really noticed if he's diverted from that.
