CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: The first player we introduced on our program today, Joann Taylor, is a woman with a fascinating and interesting job, and an unusual one.

Joann: Very.

Alex: You are a color scientist.

Joann: Yes, I am.

Alex: What do you do?

Joann: Well, if you think about it, most people, I think the most common job that people think of when they think of color, they think of people who are designers, or people who --

Alex: Who work in paints. Yeah.

Joann: Who work in paints, exactly. And my background is in chemistry. However, basically, what color scientists do are we take care of the technical aspects of making sure that color materials are correct, that they're safe, and that they're repeatable.

Alex: So if my bubblegum is not the right shade of pink, I can check with you guys and you can complain to the manufacturers?

Joann: Absolutely.

Alex: Okay, good. Nice to know.

Alex: Dolly Moehrle from Ventura, California. Born on your sister's 9th birthday?

Dolly: 9 years and 20 minutes, yes.

Alex: Yeah.

Dolly: Uh, they brought me home and they said, "Here's your birthday present," and she said,
"I wanted a Mickey Mouse watch." [ laughter ] So we got her that for her 30th birthday.

Alex: [ laughing ] Good for you. Good sense of humor.

Alex: Catherine Hardee is our champion. She works as a clerk at a hotel, and got an unusual request from a rather...buff gentleman.

Catherine: Well, he called the front desk and informed me that there was a spider in his room,
and he needed it taken care of. [ laughter ] And I was the only one there, so that left it to me
to go take care of the spider In this gentleman's room, so...I did. I think he felt a little foolish,
having a little girl take care of the spider for him, But it's all in the job description.

Alex: Did you kind of --Yeah, but did you kind of stick it to him also to say, "Hey..."

Catherine: I --you know what? I was perfectly polite, and I didn't say anything about having to take care of it for him, I --but now I'm saying it on national television, so... [ laughter ]

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE $1000: In the early 1890s Sir Arthur opened a medical practice on this London street, years after Elizabeth Barrett lived there
...
(Alex: Ah. You've forgotten about
"The Barretts
of [*]." Joann, you should have rung in
on that. You knew it.
Don't be shy.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Joann: $6,000
Catherine: $5,200
Dolly: $2,600

Haven't watched, but...
Spoiler
Assuming today's NYT clue of the day is the FJ! clue, I precall that there will be a triple get and a poll rate of at least 80%, probably much higher. I know very little about the topic and I instagot it. So much for the dearth of triple-gets this season.

Spoiler
Great performance by the champ. I thought for sure this was going to be a 100% instaget FJ. Oh well, fun game regardless.

The thread title warns of spoilers, so I'm going to say this out in the open.

Tito was an instaget for me. That being said, I didn't know how well he would be known today. So I thought Catherine might have trouble with this, as she was born about a dozen years after the funeral. But she got it right and the lady who was alive then did not.

A two player FJ doesn't make for much wagering theory, but I'm sure Keith will have fun analyzing this one.

Almost no TSes, and yet someone still ends up with $0. That's a real slugfest.

Considering my lack of Doyle knowledge, I'm surprised I went 4/5 (everything but Wimpole). It helped that most of the clues were general knowledge.

Also 4/5 in Veggies; NHO bok choy that I recall.

Legislation tripped me up. I could only think of "clean sweep" at $400, and can't say that I recognize the word "liaison".

3/5 in TV Shows. NHO House of Cards, and I know nothing about the plot points of Lost. Yes, I went "YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!" when the CSI: Miami clue came up.

DJ! ate my lunch, with only 7 right, of which 3 were We'll Get You There.

New Orleans = City That Care Forgot? What was the TOM there?

Title Movie Pairs was completely over my head. I think Clooney was the only actor name I recognized, and I've NHO Sid & Nancy.

No guess on FJ! No recognition at all on that name.

Big time. She'd have lost by $399 on a double-up.

Instaget FJ.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. A bit surprised the older contestant didn't get this. I was thinking, "Finally a no brainer FJ".

Catherine made a strong recovery after being at zero halfway through the first round. She's getting more impressive every day. I thought the FJ was the easiest so far this week. I got 35 clues correct including FJ.

Really enjoy Catherine's play and her self-confidence... I bet her buzzer skills are something else.

Did well on Arthur Conan Doyle (hello!) as well as TV plots and movie pairings.

FJ was a relief after yesterday's disaster.

See you tomorrow Catherine!

The fact that we have some taking up space in our fridge helped me get that.

You haven't followed the Jackson Five at all?

I had it instantly and since I was done before Alex said "Thirty seconds", I added "Josip Broz" to show off (to no one)

Be nice Friday, lest I check that-which-I've-never-checked on Saturday.

What pointed to skiing in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle over, say, 2 man skeleton?

NHO Elizabeth Barrett. Or anyone named Barrett, for that matter.
