I don't know how many King of the Nerds fans we have here (surely I am not the only one). I just noticed that Colby Burnett will be one of the Season Three contestants (starting in January 2015). I love the show and I love Colby, so I'll definitely be watching.

Awesome! My family told me that the show was cancelled. Not that big of a fan of Colby, but maybe his performance on KOTN will change my perception.

They meant for you personally. That was an intervention, not a picnic.

Has my wife been talking to you?

Thanks for letting us know. I watch KOTN, so perhaps Colby can reverse the outchange that program has had in its first two seasons. January always brings lots of new shows starting again, so it will be fun to see a J! champ representing the nerds. He can brag that he does not need the money and only wants the the Throne of Games.

I'm not sure if it was here or another place that I read Colby was spotted at an audition for The Chase. Do the staffers for the two shows have some kind of connection to cross-cast?

Huh, small world. I auditioned for this show and made it to final callbacks only to be rejected, twice

Arthur, I think you would make a wonderful contestant. Maybe they were worried that you are too well-known. Could you tell us a bit about the auditions? I have been tempted to try out, but I doubt that they'd be interested in a 66-year-old woman.

Can someone explain the format of the show? I'd never heard of it till Colby told me about this. (And I didn't ask him at the time.)

Jeanie, "King of the Nerds" is kind of a reality-show format in which a group of contestants participate in trivia quizzes and other pop-culture challenges, with an emphasis on science fiction, fantasy, and comic book lore. The contestants all live in a big house called "Nerdvana." At least one person is eliminated each week. Robert Carradine and Curtis Armstrong (from the "Revenge of the Nerds" movie) are the hosts. It's a fun show if you're into nerdy stuff.

Two teams, a weekly team challenge, winning team nominates someone from losing team to send into head to head challenge, losing team votes in one of their own for the head 2 head, someone eliminated. The first two seasons have been 8 weeks only, so it does not go on forever like Hell's Kitchen.

Yeah, come back when you've actually done something noteworthy on Jeopardy! and garnered visibility for yourself!

Im a fan of KOTN. Not sure about Colby's age, but isnt he a bit too old for that show? That show always strikes me as one intended for recent college grads and those still trying to figure out life.
The fact that he's apparently got a job and social skills doesn't make me feel he's right given the previous casts.

In season 1 and in season 2 the oldest competitor is listed as 28.

For season 3 Colby is listed as age 30 ( he was 29 when he won the TOC in Feb. 2013) and may be 31 when the show airs next year. Another player is shown as age 29. Age wise I don't think the jump up for a year or two is a big deal.

In the job category Colby is listed as Jeopardy! Champ, so I don't know if he is still teaching? Previous seasons had players with various job titles in the science field, so it's never been only students or recent grads necessarily.

Those with the casting powers can do what they want. Colby shows up to an audtion? Why not put him on? The crazier decision is airing the show on Fridays at 9. Sure, that's when the 18-49s are watching TV.

There was some talk about the show being cancelled, so the Friday timeslot isnt ideal. I guess they're trying to swing for the fences in terms of participant variety, so Colby may be a good choice there.

Im interested in seeing what they list Colby's nerd specialty as. Trivia is as legit a form of nerdery as anything else, so it will be fun to see how it all works out.

To clarify, I auditioned for Season 1 and Season 2 of KotN, both of which happened BEFORE Jeopardy. The fact that I've been on Jeopardy means I'm ineligible to audition for other shows, but I can only imagine "Arthur Chu, Jeopardy Champion" would've made a better audition tape than "Arthur Chu, nerdy guy who works for an insurance company".

I suppose you can find the logical inconsistency in this.

Yeah, they tend to go for the cool-sounding professions that are also "nerdy" beyond a shadow of doubt. "Voice actor" might have gotten a foot in the door.

I do hope Colby lasts longer than JWitz. By nature of the competition, people with niche skills are a big asset, but also easy to snuff out.

I guess I could re-audition once the time limit is up. I think it's a year, and the year counts real time as real time and TV time as TV time -- i.e. Colby can do it because they're going to tape it over a year after his BotD matches taped and it'll air over a year after the BotD aired.

But I think my own media profile might actually be too high for reality shows to want me. Colby's Jeopardy career was kind of in the sweet spot of "Cool story for nerds but not actual news".
