Well done, indeed, Magna and Vermonter

Wear those medals proudly, gentlemen, and be sure to trot them out every Dec. 3 when the grizzled veterans of TD 218 gather to reminisce and compare wounds.
Aw shucks, folks. I'm speechless.
:)

Thanks for a fun game!

 I was going to pick True Grit, but thought, "No, that's pretty recent; maybe a lot of people will choose it. I'll go with O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Then I used the same line of thinking for Borg.

Thanks for a fun TD!

Thanks for the excellent game, Woof! The multipliers are a great concept. I was initially going to put "tough" for my answer to the final question, but then I thought that fewer people would answer with "bough" than with "tough." Was I wrong!!! I also had a 5 multiplier for that answer. So, instead of getting 5 points on the final answer and a first-place finish, I got 40 points, which dropped me to third. Still, third place isn't bad! Congrats to Vanya and Leander.

Great game! I loved the multipliers especially since they helped me get my first top 10 in a TD. I did pretty well in using them properly - I only missed matching my multipliers from my ideal set on 4 questions. My biggest mistake with the multipliers was thinking insulin would be a big sheep for the pharmaceutical question because of the diabetes mention in the question.

TD 218 - Metaanalysis

Correlations of scores received with multipliers chosen, broken down question by question

Question 1. slope = -0.16 R^2 = 0.097
2. slope = 0.091 R^2 = 0.069
3. slope = -0.18 R^2 = 0.19
4. slope = -0.13 R^2 = 0.38
5. slope = -0.25 R^2 = 0.30
6. slope = -0.025 R^2 = 0.0073
7. slope = -0.18 R^2 = 0.18
8. slope = -0.19 R^2 = 0.21
9. slope = -0.12 R^2 = 0.17
10. slope = -0.32 R^2 = 0.35
11. slope = 0.067 R^2 = 0.018
12. slope = 0.045 R^2 = 0.032

overall: slope = -0.12 R^2 = 0.15

Conclusions: questions 1,2,6,11 and 12 showed no particular correlation between points received for an answer and the multiplier chosen to go with it. For the rest, a negative slope indicates that people were able to correctly judge how well their answer would do. The more negative the slope, the better able to judge their answer. The question where people did the best at correctly assessing their answer's potential was #10.

Average scores obtained for each multiplier

5: 5.94
4: 7.13
3: 7.61
2: 7.96
1: 9.20
-1: 14.54

What can be seen here is that people were able on the whole to judge which of their answers was best, as indicated by the relatively low score obtained for the 5 multipliers. Conversely, there was a very modest distinction between 2,3 and 4 multipliers. People did well at assigning 1s and even better at assigning -1s. This is really just another way of looking at the correlation between score and multiplier.

Totaling up those scores gives a total of 197.8, which was the average score obtained in this TD.

Great game, Woof! And congrats, Vanya. I wish I had been a bit tougher with my word choice for that last question.

Woof - thanks for the metaanalysis. I really dig that stuff, and it was very satisfying to see how this test played out.
In particular, I guess this group knows what they know about Coen movies and knows what they don't know about fancy restaurants.

I want to add my congratulations to those on the podium: Vanya, Leander, and gamer. Well played!
