Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
Hello,
I'm fairly new to the board and have noticed that a lot of acronyms and abbreviations are used, making it hard to fully understand many posts, is there a glossary of them somewhere?
Or maybe someone could define some of the most common ones here.
I think I get that DD is Daily Double, TDD is True Daily Double, and FJ is Final Jeopardy, but I'm not sure about TD and TS.
Deduction leads me to think that TS is when all three contestants miss the clue. So I'm thinking Triple something maybe.
I have no idea what TD is though, and I've seen it a lot.
Also, not sure, but I've seen Lach, and Lach trash a lot too.
Are there any others that "boarders" should be aware of?
Thanks

Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
TS is triple stumper.
TD is Think Different; a game that is played here, each game getting its own thread and there is a sticky at the top for the past games and a queue for future games.
Doug Lach is a former contestant who once stated that he could have won a game from the imaginary fourth podium from all of the triple stumpers he picked up while watching the game. So the term Lach Trash was coined to refer to any TS that you gave a correct response to while watching the game.
There are lots and lots of other initialisms and acronyms that we use here. Feel free to ask when you need clarification. Also, the J! Archive Glossary contains lots of explanations.

This seems like a good place to ask - when scoring a Coryat, how do you handle correct responses that you get on a rebound?

There should be a link to the glossary on the "Read this first" post.

Clarification, does that mean the person guesses what you would have guessed, is wrong, and causes you to change to a different guess (one which you might have much more confidence in after hearing the wrong response)?zakharov wrote:This seems like a good place to ask - when scoring a Coryat, how do you handle correct responses that you get on a rebound?

Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
Another common initialism around these parts, not in the glossary, is NHOI--"never heard of it".
Oh, and I think we've traditionally been "boardies", not "boarders", the "JBoarder of the Month" designation notwithstanding.

Either that, or I clam until hearing someone get it wrong, and then feel confident enough to "buzz."BobF wrote:Clarification, does that mean the person guesses what you would have guessed, is wrong, and causes you to change to a different guess (one which you might have much more confidence in after hearing the wrong response)?zakharov wrote:This seems like a good place to ask - when scoring a Coryat, how do you handle correct responses that you get on a rebound?

Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
I usually count them, but my system of counting coryats is wildly different than anybody elses.zakharov wrote:Either that, or I clam until hearing someone get it wrong, and then feel confident enough to "buzz."BobF wrote:Clarification, does that mean the person guesses what you would have guessed, is wrong, and causes you to change to a different guess (one which you might have much more confidence in after hearing the wrong response)?zakharov wrote:This seems like a good place to ask - when scoring a Coryat, how do you handle correct responses that you get on a rebound?
To allow for differences in buzzer speed, here's how I count my scores in the first round as an example: First 6 right count +200 each, next 6 count +400 each, next 6 count +600 each, then +800 each (never topped 24 because I don't watch kids' week). First 6 wrong (actually I rarely get more than 6 wrong) count -1000.

Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
Okay, but to avoid confusion, maybe you better not consider that a "coryat" score? Be cause if you compare it to others' coryat scores (calculated in the traditional way)... the phrase "apples and oranges" springs to mind.
To answer the original question, I usually score a rebound as "not answered", regardless of whether I had the right answer or not. I miss out on some points if I am right, but if I'm wrong and someone has beaten me to the buzzer with a wrong answer, that's all to the good. I figure it balances out in the end.

NHO TD. Took me two months to figure out what TPH meant.

Doug's last name is also pronounced "lash", not "latch", so the phrase rhymes.bpmod wrote:Doug Lach is a former contestant who once stated that he could have won a game from the imaginary fourth podium from all of the triple stumpers he picked up while watching the game. Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
I always score my Coryat as if I was on a fourth podium (with one minor tweak, while I always wait for Alex to finish, I give myself until the answer is said (or the time up buzzer sounds) to. Answer, even if the contestant clearly beat me on the buzzer as long as he hasn't said it yet it counts). So if I ring in with a wrong answer and so does the contestant (whether it's the same wrong answer or not) I don't get a shot at a rebound. If I clam initially and the contestants wrong answer leads me to the right one I get a shot. Just as if I was at that podium (because that's what I'm practicing to do)immaf wrote:Okay, but to avoid confusion, maybe you better not consider that a "coryat" score? Though I get the meaning from context, what does "WLT" stand for?

Re: Question on acronyms and abbreviations used
A note too: I notice in the thread people don't know what acronyms like TD, NHOI, WLT, TPH, etc. mean. While we've explained them, it's also been pointed out that those aren't in the glossary. While that's true, the glossary is on the Archive because it's for Archive terms, none of those terms appear in the Archive once. These would need to be a separate board glossary for things like this, for now this thread can suffice.
