Louis XIV had a very long reign I have heard of his furniture style, but it was the years that gave it to me.

One probably needs to first know that Louis XIV is a furniture style. Then you can use the dates and the city to come up with Louis instead of something like "shaker".TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2018 9:53 am Clue:
"The furniture style named for him was meant to reflect the grandeur of his 1643-1715 court at Versailles."
No idea where you're getting a king out of that.
Or you could know that Louis was known for his extravagance, then again use the dates and French city to guess that Louis XIV is a furniture style.

[citation needed] Dafuq even is "hold court"?
Or it points me nowhere because I have no bleeding clue what it is.

You know those scenes in movies and TV shows where the king or queen sits on a big chair and talks to various people - from advisors to peasants? That's holding court.

How about the title A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court?

As many times as I've heard the title, I never stopped to think of what "court" meant in that context.

Here's one from the movie Cleopatra.
How about Game of Thrones.
Wizard of Oz (Lacking the throne, but the same idea.)
Star Wars (the original, A New Hope, Episode 4, or whatever) Princess Leia as the monarch, again lacking an actual throne
The Last Jedi - Lego Version (of course they've done that already!)
Surely you have seen something similar, if not these actual scenes. (OK, probably not this specific Wizard of Oz scene, since its from a community theater, but you should immediately recognize the same scene from the movie.)

The word in the thread title is "Education," not "Inundation."Peter the accountant wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 3:01 amAlright. I'm thinking TPH just needs to find a website with a list of common idioms. I didn't think "hold court" would be the phrase that stopped him from getting the question right.

Hey now. Who are you calling a common idiom?1stlvlthinker wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 11:26 am I'm thinking TPH just needs to find a website with a list of common idioms. I didn't think "hold court" would be the phrase that stopped him from getting the question right.

It wasn't the only thing that stopped me. More like the thing that set me further off course.1stlvlthinker wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 11:26 am I'm thinking TPH just needs to find a website with a list of common idioms. Wednesday is different. If you never knew the latter was known for the former, you're never going to get it. But "hold court" should have led you TOWARDS a king. Maybe you don't know WHICH king, but when you're asking us what led us to it, and you legitimately don't know what is a common saying, I'd look to start trying to learn about it instead of complaining about it.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 8:09 pmIt wasn't the only thing that stopped me. Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)
I know he died in 1890, so 1889 was shortly before he died. He famously struggled with mental illness at the end of his life (including slicing part of his ear off). He was also famously close to his brother, so the recipient of the letter helped tease it out. Probably the only two things that most people know about him are Starry Night and the ear slicing incident, so it's not obscure at all.
The only two names that come to my mind for "mental illness" around that time period are van Gogh and Tchaikovsky, but Tchaikovsky isn't as closely associated with it, and the letter to the brother seals the deal for van Gogh.

Today's opening sequence was the one that includes Van Gogh and his famous painting, so there was the subliminal approach.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)
More generically, you knew to go to Van Gogh because you've learned more about Van Gogh than he was a painter and he cut his ear off. If you haven't learned more than that, you're never going to get the answer.Ironhorse wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:41 pmI know he died in 1890, so 1889 was shortly before he died. This differs from other questions where you can use two different paths to the answer. An example would be the Heavens $1600 stumper.
These heavenly gates are one route to climb Oregon's Mount Hood
You can know about either gates in heaven or about climbing routes on Mt Hood. If you're a Mt Hood climber, you'll know the answer. The rest of us have to take a chance that
Spoiler
Pearly Gates
That makes this FJ clue a bit tougher. It has only one path to the solution rather than two. Specifically, you must know something of Van Gogh's life. You could know when he lived or that he wrote prolifically to his brother or that he lost his mind. But you must know Van Gogh.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)
Here are the key points to know about Van Gogh:
1. Dutch, but did most of his best known paintings while living in France
2. Supported by his brother Theo
3. The Starry Night
4. Mentally unstable
5. cut off part of his ear after an argument with Paul Gauguin
Knowing those facts will lead you to most J! clues about him.

THAT'S why I missed it! I started the show in the middle of the opening sequence and was too lazy to rewind and watch from the beginning.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:01 pmToday's opening sequence was the one that includes Van Gogh and his famous painting, so there was the subliminal approach.

Good list. Probably worth adding Arles to point 1, and Sunflowers to point 3. Those seem to come up a lot too. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2018 12:08 am Here are the key points to know about Van Gogh:
