Anne Bullen = Ann Boleyn = wife of Henry VIII (Granted, that got by me tonight, but I've been sick.)
Because we all know how much I love "it sounds like a keyword, kinda sorta almost" as a TOM.
One change of syllable stress is the only difference.
Yep and Bullen was the original spelling. Boleyn was the family putting on French airs after the two daughters served at French court for a while. They were big social climbers. ;)
Sorry, but I believe that's a myth-

That's right. My own surname has at least five variant spellings that I've come across. Sometimes you'll find names spelled two or three different ways in the same document.

Huh! Then I stand corrected. :) It always amused me to imagine them doing a Hyacinth Bucket.

To track all of those down must have been a Dauntre, Dauntree, Dauntrees, Dauntrey, Dauntry, Daunting task.

Yeah, and none of those are ones I'm talking about. I did a pretty complete genealogy (with good documentation back to 1380) and was just referring to variants I found in people who were definitely the same person or very close relatives. The spelling was only finally settled in the late 1700s. The variants you listed are speculatively related to my family but, in my opinion, are a completely different family.

WLT Hanoi, Hulk, Kim Kardashian, Concord, dynamite, or FDR in the top box?

Tonkin = Vietnam
The capital is of course Hanoi.

The angry character that Mark Ruffalo plays is Hulk.

“Piktures” is spelled with a K so that reality star is Kim Kardashian.

Every school kid learns the pairing of Lexington & Concord

straight, ammonia, straight gelatin & ammonia gelatin = dynamite was beyond my knowledge but it worked for the contestant.

Who would campaign and accuse the Republicans? A Democrat. 1932 is going to be FDR.

For the 6/13 game:
A stevedore and dockworker can also be called a longshoreman. It's a vocab thing that some will get and some won't, but it's fine for first box even with the TS.

I anticipated one of the 6/13 comments before I saw the post.

Stoli = vodka
"Head" was a hint for the heads at Mt. Rushmore in SD.

An animal that may also be presented at a show not to have around a bunch of dogs in a showcase event in a top box clue? Go with cats.

Stoli = vodka
Which is such a common TOM that it's only come up 5 times before. Yeah, clearly top box material.

Totally didn't connect at all. That's a lot of hoops to jump through in the top box.

I WAG'd pitbull because aggressive dog, not something you want to have around other dogs.

I take it you don't go to bars much. Stolichnaya is one of the main brands of vodka, and it's understandably near-universally referred to as Stoli. I'm not sure I've ever actually had it, but I've known enough lushes (mostly college girls) to have picked it up.

Ditto.

I'm wondering if we should also use this thread to study TPH for the seemingly inevitable TPH category on the annual qualification tests. I admit that I did not know that TPH considered Seinfeld "not funny" and thus failed to understand his joke that the use of "uproarious" in the Seinfeld clue last week was a terrible mistake on the part of the editing staff. Therefore his joke "went over my head" and I feel properly admonished. Maybe TPH could help out by providing a list of top-rated sitcoms, correctly segregated into funny and not funny compartments. It could also help us settle the long-running dispute as to whether Ally McBeal was a drama, being one hour long, or a sitcom, having won Emmy awards in this category. And was it actually funny?

I thought my hatred of Seinfeld was pretty well known around these parts by now.

Then again, asking me to judge sitcoms by funny/not funny is like asking Ken Jennings to judge varieties of vodka.

But even if I did like sitcoms, Seinfeld's "let's spend the whole goddamn episode arguing about whether or not 'Moops' is a typo" or "let's spend a whole episode doing LITERALLY NOTHING in a Chinese restaurant" brand of "humor" would make me want to pull an Elvis on my TV.

Strangely, while I sometimes used to share this opinion of Seinfeld, Bubble Boy was the episode that got me hooked (Moops came rather late in the episode - the triviality and tenaciousness of the dispute was what made it hilarious). I didn't truly "get" Seinfeld until the first run of the finale, when I finally figured out Seinfeld's brand of humor is poking fun at anti-heroes and that he considers himself a collector of anti-heroes. To put himself on trial literally for being a crappy person for seven years... I suddenly realized the genius of his humor. I don't say that sarcastically. It took me a while, but I would call Seinfeld one of the best written sitcoms we have.

Anyway, no, I was unaware that Seinfeld dislike was one of your touchstones. Perhaps a FAQ, then?

In today's world where a television "hit" means more than a 1.0 rating in 18-49s, television as proper trivia fodder is disappearing. Seinfeld's finale, first-run, was seen by more than 75 million people.

Sorry the scan came out a little blurry (I was trying to handle the old paper very carefully), but here is a portion of a 60-year-old road map from my personal collection. Major highways are red, but the more minor highways are blue.

The questions are based on the majority opinion. Regadless of your personal opinions, were you unaware that a lot of people thought it was funny?

And it wasn't clear from the clue, but Heat-Moon's "Blue Highways" was about traveling off the beaten path, i.e. these blue highways, not the red ones.

I ended up knowing Blue Highways just because I knew of the book--I used to live in the same area as the author and he was always doing signings and lectures and stuff.

I just picked three random maps from my collection. Two are official Michigan ones from the highway department, and both have all highways in red. One was a Sohio map of the eastern US, and it had major highways in red, minor ones in black, and freeways in green.
