I'd round the 592 to 600. 1400-600 is 800, then add the extra eight for 808.
:?: :?: :?:
600 - 592 = 8. That's the extra eight I'm referring to.

This is where we're losing me. The problem keeps getting broken down into more and more steps that just feel like way more work.

There are really two steps.
1. Find something close that you can easily do in your head. 1400-600 = 800
2. Add or subtract the amount needed to perform step 1. In this case you had to add 8 to 592 to get to 600, so now add that to the 800 you got in step 1.

If this is too complex, I really don't know what else to say.

How do I know to get to step 1 though? How do I know what to change the 592 to?

What's the number closest to 592 that turns this into arithmetic you can easily do in your head? For me it's 600.

I think it's time to create an Official TPH Education Thread (MATH EDITION). I prefer the variety of beating my head against a DIFFERENT wall each time. :D

Good thing TPH was never on a game show where it would help to be able to do math in your head quickly to see if you have enough money to advance to the bonus round or if you need to get more before you solve a puzzle or something like that.

Seriously? You think all of these are equally hard?

1400-592. Okay, you're rounding that 592 up to some other random number.

But what if it's 1400-572? Or 1400-593? Or 1400-692?

So should I stop wasting mine too, since I'm clearly never gonna get this? I literally had to sit down and figure out 592+8 on paper.

That still doesn't answer:
But what if it's 1400-572? Or 1400-593? Or 1400-692?

I think it would be fair to say that this is not where you're going to learn how to do this. If someone could sit down with you one on one, maybe.

IF you want to learn, either fire up some Khan Academy videos or some Sporcle quizzes on subtraction. Practice is the only cure here.
