CINNAMON IS A SPICE?!?!
As opposed to a ...?
I dunno, plant? Bark?
Well, actually, cinnamon is taken from the bark of a tree.
My point is, it's not stored in my brain as a "spice". And I find that far too often, "Not stored in my brain as X" is what trips me up on both HQ Words and J!
Just curious. How have you used cinnamon? Hopefully not in the guise of a cruel internet challenge.

That was one part failing to process....
Just as an aside, I think "Failure to Process" is the ideal title for a TPH memoir/biography/autobiography.

There is a lot of noise, but "The Nanny" is Fran Drescher. It's a well-known TV show. She is memorable in the role. Top box fine.
Neither rings the faintest of bells.
I'm a few years younger than you and I had no problem with that clue.

I think Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the main reason I associate cinnamon with sweet and not "spice". Because again, "spice" conveys a heat factor, and I don't think Red Hots really count as an accurate representation of cinnamon.

Spices do not convey a heat factor despite that fact that some spices pack heat. Try wandering down the spice aisle at your local grocery store sometime for an education.

Herbs are made from the green or otherwise leafy parts of the plant. Spices come from the other parts (roots, bark, stem, seeds, etc.) Has nothing to do with the heat of the product.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

I know that. I'm just saying that the word "spice" always fools me into thinking of ones that have heat to them because of the etymological connection to "spicy". I KNOW that certain spices are not spicy. Just a quirk of how my brain processes the word.

Willy Brandt is German. Pick Germany, East Germany or West Germany. He's a famous leader and J! players will/should have some familiarity. Ostpolitik gives you Ost=East for the extra hint.
That's great and exactly what I did. Problem is the correct response was WEST Germany.
East Germany wouldn't have an "East" foreign policy, though--West Germany would.

#7810, aired 2018-07-20 LANGUAGE $400: Language groups as disparate as Celtic, Slavic & Indo-Iranian are part of the family called Indo-this

It's been over six months (barely) so we'll give it to you. The clue was first box and you would have had a better chance recalling it if the contestants did not get it.

No guess on FJ! Had no idea that the Rangers were anything other than a sports team.
So, the Chuck Norris show was about his time in the majors?
Knowing literally nothing about the show besides its title, that didn't register. Even if it did, I would've thought it to be something made up just for the show.
Surely you've at least heard of The Lone Ranger? Tonto? "Hi-ho Silver, away!"

I have, but I had no idea that they were from Texas.

"spotted cheetah" leads to Chester and he's Cheetos.

The FJ! clue had "circle" and that was enough for some solvers.

Or it's just something you tune out as immaterial background noise.
I guess "generic names don't stick" also applies to titles and not just people.

Circle gets the square.

Do you actually read through the clues, or do you just simply assume all words are immaterial background noise?
Won some of Ben Stein's money. None of Alex Trebek's, and maybe some of Chris Harrison's?

Half the time I'm told to focus in on just key words. The other half of the time, I'm told to read EVERY word.

Both are correct. Read every word to determine what's important. A big part of Jeopardy is parsing the clues as written to see what they want. They're written in the "Jeopardy style", and things that stand out (like "circle" in the Dorothy Parker clue a couple days ago) should alert you that it's important.

This is NOT a skill that comes easily to all people, obviously, and you shouldn't feel bad for having it not click in your head.

That stood out to me about negative 3000 percent.

I saw the Cheetos clue as
blah blah blah blah this Frito-Lay snack
Because 99% of the time, especially in the top box, you need only the bits after "this".

Well, you said yourself it seemed very wide open; why not look elsewhere in the clue when "this x" doesn't get you anywhere?

Because a lot of the time it IS just guessing out of a wide open pool.
