CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Eugene Britton is married to a Cajun. You are one of those Americans. They don't often allow Americans to marry in, do they?

Eugene: No, I'm the first to marry in to her family in almost 200 years.

Alex: Now, have you spent a lot of time with her folks, and have you absorbed a lot of that culture? Fascinating stuff.

Eugene: Definitely the food.

Alex: The food?

Eugene: Not so much the language.

Alex: And what about the music?

Eugene: And the music as well.

Alex: Yeah. Okay, good for you.

Alex: Mariusz Galczynski is from St. Charles, Illinois, a university lecturer who seemed to feel comfortable with the opera category. And I know that you have translated a Polish opera?

Mariusz: Yes, when I was doing my master's, I did a project translating the most famous Polish opera, Halka, which is not often known to Western audiences, but performed yearly in Poland, has Polish dances, Polish songs, arias...

Alex: And did you perform in it as well?

Mariusz: Yes, at the end we had a recital - was nerve-wracking, but a pleasure to perform.

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: Doug Perez is our champion. Now, I mentioned Eugene is married to a Cajun. How long have you been married?

Doug: I've been married eight years.

Alex: Now, when you met your wife to be, it wasn't the most romantic of circumstances.

Doug: No, unfortunately, I think I'm very funny, but on that day, she did not think I was very funny, and our encounter ended with her giving me a double bird and storming out of the room.

[Laughter]

Alex: Whoa!

Doug: But we've been married eight years now.

Alex: And no more double birds since.
Okay.

Doug: Didn't say that.

Alex: Oh!

[Laughter]

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Eugene: $12,995
Doug: $11,000
Mariusz: $10,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
PEOPLE IN THE ARTS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Eugene: Wager $9,006 to cover Doug.
Doug: You ought to wager to cover Mariusz, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you ought to choose between wagering $0 or maximizing your winnings with a bet of all $11,000. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $9,400 (to shut out Mariusz) or less than $7,010 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Mariusz). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Eugene.
Mariusz: You ought to try wagering between $801 and $6,210. This will top a $0 wager by Doug while still beating Eugene and Doug on the Triple Stumper (should Eugene wager to cover Doug's doubled score and Doug wager to cover your doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
He once said, "It is through fantasy that children achieve catharsis. It is the best means they have for taming wild things"

FINAL SCORES
Mariusz: $10,200 + $10,150 = $20,350 (Who is Sendak?) (New champion: $20,350)
Doug: $11,000 - $10,990 = $10 (Who is Barrie) (3rd place: $1,000)
Eugene: $12,995 - $9,100 = $3,895 (Who Shel Silverstein?) (2nd place: $2,000)
[Before revealing answers] (Alex: I feel we're going to get a variety of responses for this one.)
[After revealing Maurisz's response] (Alex: Author of Where the Wild Things Are.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $11,800

Another hot game! It all came down to FJ, which is how games should be. I immediately thought of Sendak but avoided saying it out loud because I'm not fond of that man.

I completely understand why the 3rd player bet $5 on that French revolution DD. His pronunciations in the e-u category might have led some to unfairly suspect he wasn't as bright as the others. (Who says life is supposed to be fair?)

I was surprised AT corrected Mariush's pronunciation on penguins. Emanciptation, anyone?

It was Doug though.

Exciting game. Surprised Mariusz didn't get Pele, considering his wager made it seem he was quite confident in the category.

Eugene's cajun family must be loving him for that pronunciation. You could tell in his wry smile that he knew he was gonna get some flak for it. I almost expected Alex to poke fun at him when they started going down the reign of terror category. (What is noter daim?)

Food flags was a lot of fun, though quite easy. and i love me a little bit of before and after. Still waiting for "Final Fantasy football" though.

And is it me or was "inside baseball" a little on the ridiculous side?

I thought Sendak was negbait re: wild things. Went for Roald Dahl instead.

And thus continues the one-and-done streak. What's that, eight or nine one-day champs in a row? At this rate they're going to have to select ToC contestants by who has the nicest haircut.

Why does that matter? Hitler and Stalin have come up, and I haven't felt uneasy about answering the question.

This was an excellent game, especially by Mariusz. I got 28 clues correct including fox; ring; Clyde; wages & prices; and FJ which was instant. The last two words in the FJ clue were "wild things" which made me think of Maurice Sendak and his Where the Wild Things Are.

Fun game to watch. Precalled the $5 wager. Lach Trash: Pele, Josephine.

Instaget FJ.

I really enjoyed this board, especially the DJ round. I would have wagered all but a few dollars on that last DD in an attempt to win the game right there...and it would have blown up in my face, as Josephine was not on my radar. I thought that I would like that Reign of Terror category, but I only got the $400 clue.

FJ was an instant get, but I couldn't help but think that it was too obvious. I also wouldn't have expected a children's lit author from a "people in the arts" category. And I probably only thought of him because of the recent FJ, but Caldecott did cross my mind.

What's wrong with Sendak? Don't know about his life.

Got the "wild things" reference instantly. I didn't think that it was negbait, there was nothing else in the clue of any substance.

Seriously? I had to say both Trent Lott and Linda Tripp in my games (not to mention the abomination known as the Indianapolis Colts), and I managed to get all of that out without expectoration.

Given the way he pronounced "eau", Eugene was right about not knowing the French language. No shame though, it is very hard to learn a language as an adult.

I was really impressed by the contestants' performance in the Before and After. I thought it was a tough category and I did not even get one of the two component parts of any of the five answers.

Did many people around here get the Hawaiian mythology clue? It seemed pretty tough for a second-row DD. I have never seen or heard a thing about Hawaiian mythology.

Lach Trash: Fox, Frigga. Knew the latter from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

I could've run Chick Lit but the top 3 came to me too slow.

Never knew that raincheck was a baseball term. I thought it was only a retailing term. Also NHO "inside baseball" and thought the clue was too cutesy for it, but I'll take 3/5 on Sports anyday.

I thought Opera for $200 was undervalued, but I didn't even need to wait for the audio clue before getting Barber. I also got Carmen because Uncle John's Bathroom Reader once ran a poorly translated libretto.

Flags was incredibly clever, IMO.

I thought Rhyming Brands was going to be one of those weird "gah, everything but $400" moments because all I could think of at $400 was Parade, which in no way rhymes. Then I was too slow on StubHub, so I took the middle 3.

Elihu was my only miss in E to U.

It's been a while since I skunked a Before & After, but for me, it went "Bloody Mary what, now?" "The what march of the Penguins, now?", and "Puss in boots... ah screw it, I don't know the other half of that one."

Blah blah children's fantasy Wild Things. Almost instaget, because it took me about 2 seconds to remember the name.
countyguy wrote:Did many people around here get the Hawaiian mythology clue? It seemed pretty tough for a second-row DD. I have never seen or heard a thing about Hawaiian mythology.
The name Pele at least rang a bell as a Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, but it was too far back to pull up in time. I think I knew it from, say it with me, Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

Instaget on FJ. All the words except the last two in the clue were superfluous, imho. Fully expected it to be a Triple-Getter.

Never heard of the phrase, "Inside Baseball," at least not in that context. Said Bush League instead.
