On introductions I told myself Maruiusz would win just to make me write his name again for tomorrow's scoresheet. I've had enough repetitions over the years for Leszek Pawlowicz and Vinita Kailasanath, so if he does well enough I'll get to a point to do Mariusz Galczynski without looking. Or I'll just call him Scrabble.
I said crochet, but had a feeling at the time it wasn't the first thing the writers were looking for. It probably was, though.

I had a Polish office mate once who taught me about Polish spelling and pronunciation, and I can still spell Rzepczynski and Krzyzewski without looking them up.

At the age of 53, I'm noticing a lot more times when I'm pretty sure I have a response in my mind somewhere but I just can't retrieve it, and also more times when I confuse or conflate two responses. For some reason, I confuse the "wild things" guy and the "all things bright and beautiful" guy (whose name I just thought of without looking it up). Last night, I couldn't think of either one and went with Dr. Seuss just to have something.

Enjoyed the flag food category. Missed Pele but should have had it. Didn't get "inside baseball".

Cruciverbalists would have cleaned up on Pelee, Emu, Esau, Elihu, and Ecru in this game.

Book's a classic, as is short animated film (or am I remembering Reading Rainbow bit?)... Jonez movie is skippable.

I guessed "small ball" for that one. I think someone is putting pressure on the writers to write clues that haven't been written before. We seem to be getting a lot more clues that are bad in that specific way.

I thought the $200 Opera clue was ridiculous as well. Is it really commonly known that Lenora hides poison in her ring in Il Trovatore? Other than that "easiest" clue, I ran the category.

For the volcano goddess clue, I said "Who is Edson Arantes do Nascimento?" Judges?

Buried too deep for a J! get; could've used about 5 more minutes.

Not surprised, really.

I thought Disney first; people asked why he had scary things in his movies for children, he replied they needed to be scared so they knew things could get better. Damn if I can find an exact reference on the Google; pretty sure I picked it up from the Sleeping Beauty DVD extras.

Then I clued in to how "wild things" was explicit in the clue; that seemed too spot on to simply be a random quote snippet, so changed to Sendak. But if you missed that, there's a wide range of logical answers it could be. "People in the Arts" is extremely broad, too.

Laura Nyro?!?! Kate Bush, maybe, but Laura Nyro?!!?
Nyro can be an acquired taste (at times she can fall off the deep end with the yowling) but jeez there is brilliant stuff on the Eli And The Thirteenth Confession album. And she really influenced Todd Rundgren.

And there I was feeling so smug about the Sendak Instaget. Now I see pretty much everybody got it, and the same way I did. Oh well.

Sorry to see Doug go, as he was one of the more enjoyable contestants to watch lately, IMO. Nonetheless congrats to the new champ.

Thanksgiving, as with all my holidays, looks to be a wash. I get a day away from the office, but have to spend it with my in-laws.

That might be one of those "you know it or you don't" things. I knew if from stories I'd heard before, and most Hawai'ian luaus include a reference to her in one of the dance numbers.

Ironically, Sendak had another hand in the arts. I recall he did the scenery and costumes for Seattle's Pacific Northwest Ballet's version of The Nutcracker a couple of decades ago. I understand this is to be the last year they use them:

I'm guessing if it were Sendak's gayness or godlessness, no one here would cop to it (I could be wrong). So probably the leading objectionable detail (which may be still grasping at straws or have the previous 2 rolled into it) is that he wrote (and illustrated!) the book "In the Night Kitchen" with a young boy prancing around the house au naturel. I mean, as adults we all know that almost never happens and when it does it should be shamed, right? Anyway, it's ALA's #21/100 most frequently challenged/banned books of the 90s. So probably the newsmax/Drudge teasers would be something like "Noted Gay Heathen Wants to Recruit Your Children with Dirty Pictures" or how about "How Commie Librarians Support Fifth-Column Recruitment Author, Destroy America"

Dear Abby,

At what age is it no longer funny for a young boy to prance around the house naked? I am 45.

Dear Mr Kid,
It's still OK (and possibly funny) for you to prance around the house naked, but you should probably stop referring to yourself as a young boy. :)

I would, however, expect someone who explicitly states their dislike for someone else would be willing to explain their rationale for it.

Yes! He appeared to be very comfortable on the show (which is rare enough) and had the greatest chat story (and riposte to Alex!) that I've ever heard. They are the most awkward parts of the show and his was delightful. Anytime you get to say 'double birds' on national TV is a win.

I also enjoyed Eugene's amused reaction to Alex' corrections. That smile said 'yeah, ok, whatever.' To be fair, does anyone really ever say/hear EAU pronounced anymore? I mean you read 'eau de toilette/cologne/parfum' and along with stuff like ADE they're crossword staples, but not exactly that useful otherwise.

Sorry, Doug, I heard 'prenguin,' which is of course Not A Thing.
